30G2 is a manganese steel for quenching and tempering. It carries 0.25–0.32 % carbon and 1.30–1.65 % manganese. The same grade is written 30G2 in the Polish PN and Russian GOST systems, 28Mn6 (1.1170) in EN 10083-2, 30Mn2 in GB and 1330 in the SAE system. Normalized, it gives 630 MPa tensile strength in sections to 16 mm. Quenched and tempered, it reaches 800–950 MPa in the same section.

What is 30G2 steel?
30G2 is a manganese structural steel used after normalizing or after quenching and tempering. Manganese at 1.30–1.65 % raises hardenability and strength above a plain carbon steel of the same carbon level. That lets 30G2 cover work which would otherwise call for a molybdenum grade, as long as the section is not too heavy.
The grade holds up under reversing bending and torsion, which is why it appears in axles, connecting rods and stirrer shafts. Hardenability is the limit. Water quenching develops full properties to about 40 mm, oil quenching to about 25 mm. Beyond that the core falls back towards normalized values, so heavy 30G2 forgings are normally ordered in the +N condition.
Manganese also brings two things to watch. 30G2 coarsens if it is soaked too hot, and it is subject to temper brittleness if it cools slowly through the range below the tempering temperature. Both are controlled at the furnace rather than by changing grade.
We forge 30G2 on the same presses as 42CrMo4 and AISI 4140, and will quote a job in whichever of the three suits the section.

We normally work to P ≤ 0.025 % and S ≤ 0.035 %. The ladle and product analysis of each heat is printed on the EN 10204 3.1 certificate that travels with the forging. Tighter residual limits, calcium treatment or vacuum degassing can be written into the order.

30G2 heat treatment and hot working

Best through-hardening comes in sections to about 40 mm in water and about 25 mm in oil. Above that the core approaches normalized properties, which is why heavy 30G2 forgings are usually ordered +N.
How 30G2 is open-die forged
Our route from billet to a certified 30G2 forging:
- Raw material. Electric-arc furnace steel refined by ladle furnace, with vacuum degassing when the order calls for reduced hydrogen and tighter inclusion cleanliness.
- Heating. The billet is soaked to 1100 °C in a controlled furnace. 30G2 is sensitive to overheating, so the soak temperature is held rather than exceeded to avoid coarse austenite grain.
- Open-die forging. Upsetting and drawing on a hydraulic press with a total forging ratio of at least 3:1, and 4:1 or higher for shafts and rings where directional properties matter. Forging finishes at or above 850 °C.
- Post-forge cooling. Slow cooling in still air or covered in sand. Heavy sections may go straight into a furnace for controlled cooling to avoid flakes.
- Heat treatment. Normalizing at 850–890 °C to refine the as-forged structure, followed by quenching and tempering when +QT properties are specified.
- Rough machining. Turning or boring to the customer's machining allowance so that test pieces come from a representative location.
- Testing and certification. Chemical analysis, mechanical testing, ultrasonic examination and dimensional inspection, released against EN 10204 3.1.

Applications of 30G2 forgings
30G2 and its equivalents go into heavily worked structural parts that have to carry reversing bending and torsion after heat treatment:
- Axles, shafts, cardan shafts, camshafts and crankshafts
- Gear wheels, gear rims and pinion shafts in general engineering gearboxes
- Connecting rods, levers, forks and shanks
- Wheels, rollers, drums and stirrer shafts
- High-pressure cylinders, rotors and structural machine parts
- Larger fasteners and studs where moderate strength is sufficient
Notch toughness at and slightly below ambient temperature is good, so the grade also turns up in weld-fabricated pressure parts where the design temperature does not call for a low-temperature steel.
Machining and welding 30G2
Machining
30G2 machines well in the normalized or soft-annealed condition, where hardness stays at or below 223 HBW. On long shafts and thin discs, rough machine first, stress relieve at about 650 °C, then finish. That keeps distortion down.
Welding and thermal cutting
Weldability is limited by the manganese level. Preheat to 200–300 °C, use low-hydrogen consumables with arc or MAG, hold the interpass temperature, and stress relieve at about 650 °C afterwards. Oxy-fuel and plasma cutting need the same preheat and cooling in still air.
Long soaks decarburize the surface. Either run a controlled atmosphere or leave enough machining allowance to cut the decarburized layer away.

What is the forging temperature for 30G2 steel?
30G2 is forged from 1100 °C down to a finishing temperature of about 850 °C. Because the grade is sensitive to overheating and grain coarsening, the soak temperature is held rather than exceeded and the finish temperature is not undercut. Forgings are cooled slowly in air or sand and then normalized at 850–890 °C to refine the grain.
Can 30G2 steel be welded?
30G2 has limited weldability because of its manganese content, but it can be welded with care by arc or MAG processes. Preheat to roughly 200–300 °C, use low-hydrogen consumables, control the interpass temperature and stress relieve after welding at about 650 °C. Flame and plasma cutting need the same preheat and slow cooling in air.
What is the difference between 30G2 and 42CrMo4?
30G2 is a manganese steel with about 0.28 % carbon and no deliberate chromium or molybdenum addition, so it has lower hardenability and is normally used up to about 100 mm after quenching and tempering. 42CrMo4 contains around 1 % chromium and 0.22 % molybdenum, which gives deeper hardening, higher strength and better temper resistance in heavy sections. 30G2 is the lower-cost choice where strength requirements are moderate.
