Nimonic 80A was developed as a replacement for valve steels and it remains the reference alloy wherever a part has to hold load in hot, sulphur-bearing gas. Titanium and aluminium additions precipitate a coherent gamma-prime phase during ageing. That precipitate, not cold work, is what carries the strength at temperature. Chromium at 18 to 21 % forms the Cr2O3 scale that keeps oxidation and sulphidation off the base metal.

Because the strength comes from precipitation rather than deformation, the forging route and the heat treatment record matter as much as the chemistry. A Nimonic 80A ring finished below its recommended temperature, or aged on an uncontrolled cycle, will pass the chemical analysis and fail the creep test. That is the failure mode our process controls are built around.

Furnace charts are retained and supplied with the certificate on request. For extended service above 750 °C a double-age cycle can be applied. Specify it at enquiry stage.

Forging window

Nimonic 80A is forged between roughly 1177 °C and 982 °C (2150 to 1800 °F). The workable range is narrow compared with steel. The alloy stiffens quickly as it cools and will crack if worked cold. Our practice is to plan reductions so that the final deformation still happens above about 1000 °C, reheating between passes rather than chasing the last few millimetres in a cooling billet. That is what produces the uniform fine grain the creep test depends on.

Engine exhaust valves

The largest single application for the alloy. Marine and heavy-oil diesel engines burn fuel with high sulphur content, and Nimonic 80A resists the resulting sulphidation where valve steels do not.

Gas turbine hot section

Nimonic 80A or Inconel 718?

Inconel 718 is stronger below about 650 °C and far easier to weld, which is why it dominates aerospace rotating hardware. Nimonic 80A holds strength and oxidation resistance better between 700 °C and 815 °C and resists sulphidation from combustion products. If the part sits in hot corrosive gas, specify 80A. If it needs maximum strength at moderate temperature and will be welded, specify 718. We forge both.

What is the heat treatment for Nimonic 80A?

The standard treatment is solution treatment for 8 hours at 1080 °C (1976 °F) followed by air cooling, then ageing for 16 hours at 700 °C (1292 °F) followed by air cooling. This precipitates the gamma-prime Ni3(Al,Ti) phase that gives the alloy its strength.

What are the mechanical properties of Nimonic 80A?

In the solution treated and aged condition, Nimonic 80A meets a minimum tensile strength of 1000 MPa (145 ksi), a minimum 0.2 % proof strength of 621 MPa (90 ksi) and a minimum elongation of 20 %. Typical hardness is 262 to 302 HB.
