1.1169 is the EN material number, or Werkstoffnummer, for the steel grade 20Mn6. European standards classify it as a non-alloy special steel. The manganese content of 1.30 to 1.60% is added for strength and hardenability rather than as an alloying system, so the grade is normally described as a carbon-manganese steel and not as a low-alloy steel.
Low carbon together with raised manganese gives 1.1169 good toughness at sub-zero temperatures and sound weldability. How a 1.1169 forging is made
- Melting and ingot supplySteel is melted to the 1.1169 composition. Where the application calls for low inclusion content, the ingot is refined by electroslag remelting before it goes to the forge shop.
- Open-die forgingThe ingot is upset and drawn on a hammer or on the 4500 t press to a forging ratio that breaks down the cast structure. Rings are pierced and rolled on the 3 m or 6 m mill.
- Heat treatmentNormalising, or quench and temper at 860 to 890 °C and 500 to 650 °C, in calibrated furnaces with a recorded temperature chart.
- MachiningRough or finish machining to your drawing, including bores, faces, steps and gear blank profiles.
