1.2327 86CrMoV7 open-die forgings

Cold work tool steel forgings, forged and heat treated by Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. in Jiangyin, Jiangsu, China. Last reviewed .

1.2327 is a low-alloyed cold work tool steel, designated 86CrMoV7 under DIN 17350 and EN ISO 4957. It carries about 0.87% carbon and 1.75% chromium with small molybdenum and vanadium additions. The grade hardens deeply, resists wear, and has low crack sensitivity in heavy sections, which is why cold mill work rolls, back-up rolls and straightening rolls are commonly forged from it.

Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. forges 1.2327 to drawing at its plant at No.1 Chengxiqiao Road, Zhouzhuang Town, Jiangyin City, Jiangsu Province, China. Forms include round bars, hollow bars and sleeves, seamless rolled rings, discs, shafts and roll blanks. Orders ship with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate.

What is 1.2327 steel?

1.2327 is the material number. 86CrMoV7 is the name for the same steel in DIN 17350 and EN ISO 4957.

Buyers use both, and a drawing calling for one is satisfied by the other. The chemistry does three jobs. Carbon at roughly 0.87% sets the hardness the steel can reach. Chromium at roughly 1.75% pushes hardenability deep enough to be useful in a large forged section. Molybdenum and vanadium refine the grain and slow the loss of hardness during tempering.

What separates 1.2327 from the higher-alloy cold work grades is crack sensitivity, which is low. In a heavy section that matters more than peak hardness. Forged cold rolling rolls with barrel diameters in the hundreds of millimetres are the classic application, and the grade earned its place there rather than in general die work.

We supply 1.2327 as forged product only. There is no plate or strip stock in this grade here. Each piece is open-die forged and heat treated to the condition stated on the order.

Chemical composition of 1.2327

Typical analysis is 0.87% C, 0.30% Si, 0.38% Mn, 1.75% Cr, 0.28% Mo, 0.13% Ni and 0.10% V, balance iron.

Chemical composition of 1.2327 / 86CrMoV7, weight %
Element Typical analysis Usual specified range
Carbon (C)0.870.83 to 0.90
Silicon (Si)0.300.15 to 0.35
Manganese (Mn)0.380.30 to 0.45
Chromium (Cr)1.751.60 to 1.90
Molybdenum (Mo)0.280.15 to 0.30
Nickel (Ni)0.13not specified
Vanadium (V)0.100.05 to 0.15
Phosphorus (P)–0.030 max
Sulphur (S)–0.030 max

Roll work usually calls for tighter sulphur and phosphorus than the standard requires. ESR refined material can be sourced when a specification asks for it. Put the limits on the enquiry and they go into the certificate.

Heat treatment of 1.2327

1.2327 is soft annealed at 720 to 750 °C, stress relieved near 650 °C, hardened from 800 to 850 °C in water or oil to 64 to 67 HRC, then tempered between 200 and 600 °C.

  1. Soft annealing Heat to 720 to 750 °C and cool slowly in the furnace. Maximum resulting hardness is 230 HB. Forgings normally ship in this condition for further machining.
  2. Stress relieving After rough machining, heat to approximately 650 °C, hold 1 to 2 hours at temperature, then air cool. The step reduces distortion during hardening and should not be skipped on long or thin-walled parts.
  3. Hardening Austenitise at 800 to 820 °C, or 830 to 850 °C for heavier sections, followed by water or oil quenching. Hardness straight after quenching is 64 to 67 HRC.
  4. Tempering Temper between 200 and 600 °C, chosen from the working hardness required. Rolls are usually tempered low to keep hardness. Higher tempering suits parts where toughness matters more than surface hardness.

We deliver 1.2327 forgings soft annealed, normalised and tempered, or quenched and tempered to a specified hardness band, with the furnace record attached to the certificate.

Forging 1.2327

Hot forming runs from 1150 °C down to 850 °C. Forging stops before the steel falls below 850 °C.

High carbon makes this grade intolerant of a cold finish and of fast cooling straight off the press. Forgings go into a slow cool and then soft annealing. That is a good reason to buy the part already forged rather than buy stock and forge it locally.

Production route

  1. Material Ingot or bloom in verified 1.2327 analysis, ESR refined where the specification requires it.
  2. Open-die forging Upsetting and drawing under a hydraulic press with a manipulator.
  3. Ring rolling Seamless rolled rings produced on a radial-axial ring mill for sleeve, bush and cylinder geometries.
  4. Heat treatment Soft annealing, normalising and tempering, or quenching and tempering in temperature-recorded furnaces.
  5. Rough machining Turning, boring and milling to the machining allowance agreed on the drawing.
  6. Inspection and release Chemical analysis, hardness survey, ultrasonic testing and dimensional report, issued as an EN 10204 3.1 certificate.

Buying 1.2327 from Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal

The plant sits in Jiangyin, on the south bank of the Yangtze in Jiangsu, inside a long-established forging cluster.

Forging is what we do. Bars, hollow bars, rolled rings, discs and roll blanks come off our own presses rather than out of a stockholder's rack, and work is made to drawing in the geometry, allowance and heat-treated condition you specify.

Mixed-grade projects can ship from one place. Alongside 1.2327 we forge 42CrMo4, 34CrNiMo6, 18CrNiMo7-6, 17-4PH, Inconel 718 and Incoloy 825. Single prototype pieces are quoted on the same terms as series work, and traceability runs from ladle analysis through the heat treatment record to the final ultrasonic result.

Frequently asked questions about 1.2327

What is 1.2327 steel?

1.2327 is the material number of a low-alloyed cold work tool steel designated 86CrMoV7 under DIN 17350 and EN ISO 4957. It carries about 0.87% carbon and 1.75% chromium with small molybdenum and vanadium additions. It hardens deeply, resists wear and has low crack sensitivity in heavy sections, which is why cold mill rolls are commonly forged from it.

Is 1.2327 the same as 86CrMoV7?

Yes. 1.2327 is the material number and 86CrMoV7 is the alphanumeric designation for the same steel under DIN 17350 and EN ISO 4957. A drawing calling for one is satisfied by the other.

What are the equivalent grades of 1.2327?

The closest equivalents to 1.2327 / 86CrMoV7 are NC7V and NC7VL in Poland under BN-68/0631-03, 9Ch2MF in GOST countries, and 9Cr2MoV or 85Cr2MoV in China. These grades are close rather than identical, so Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. advises comparing the actual ladle analysis before substituting on a roll drawing.

What hardness can 1.2327 reach after hardening?

1.2327 reaches 64 to 67 HRC directly after quenching from 800 to 850 °C. After tempering, typical values are 65 HRC at 100 °C, 61 HRC at 200 °C and 58 HRC at 300 °C. Soft annealed hardness is 230 HB maximum.

What is 1.2327 used for?

1.2327 is used for cold mill work rolls, back-up rolls, second intermediate rolls for 20-high cluster mills, straightening and leveller rolls, scale breaker rolls, roll shafts and journals, and rolls for non-ferrous 2-high and 4-high rolling mills.

What is the forging temperature of 1.2327?

Hot forming runs from 1150 °C down to 850 °C. Forging must stop before the steel falls below 850 °C. Because of the high carbon content the forging is then cooled slowly and soft annealed.
