Summary

Inconel 725 (UNS N07725) is an age-hardenable nickel-chromium-molybdenum-niobium alloy whose corrosion resistance is close to Alloy 625 but whose strength is about double. That strength comes from an ageing heat treatment rather than from cold work, so it can also be developed in thick or non-uniform forged sections that cannot be cold worked, and the alloy keeps good ductility and toughness.

What Inconel 725 is

Inconel 725, designated UNS N07725 and also sold as Alloy 725, is a precipitation-hardening nickel-base alloy containing 55 to 59 % nickel, 19.0 to 22.5 % chromium, 7.0 to 9.5 % molybdenum and 2.75 to 4.00 % niobium plus tantalum.

Strength comes from a gamma-prime phase that precipitates during a two-stage ageing treatment. In practice this decides most material selections. Because the hardening is done by heat treatment and not by cold work, a 400 mm thick forged ring reaches the same minimum properties as a thin bar. Cold-worked grades cannot do that, and it is the main reason Alloy 725 is used for heavy subsea and downhole hardware.

Chromium handles oxidising media. The high molybdenum content handles reducing acids and gives strong pitting and crevice resistance. Titanium holds back intergranular attack, and the high nickel level resists chloride stress-corrosion cracking. Together these put the alloy on the approved list in NACE MR0175 for sour oil and gas wells carrying carbon dioxide, chlorides and hydrogen sulphide.

On naming: Inconel® is a registered trademark of Special Metals Corporation. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal is an independent forging factory and supplies the alloy under its generic designations, UNS N07725 or Alloy 725. Purchase orders should use those.

Chemical composition of Inconel 725 (UNS N07725)

Composition limits come from ASTM B805, with iron as the balance. Every heat is analysed and the analysis is printed on the EN 10204 certificate that ships with the forging.

Mechanical properties of Inconel 725

In the age-hardened condition Inconel 725 gives a minimum 0.2 % proof stress of 827 MPa (120 ksi) and a minimum tensile strength of 1034 MPa (150 ksi), with at least 20 % elongation and 35 % reduction of area, at a hardness below 43 HRC.

Annealed against age hardened, typical values

This table is why Alloy 725 is almost always bought in the aged condition. Values are typical for transverse specimens taken from hot-finished rounds of 102 to 190 mm (4.0 to 7.5 in) diameter.

Ageing more than doubles proof stress and still leaves 30 % elongation. That is what makes the alloy usable for high-load parts in corrosive duty.

Physical properties of Inconel 725

Inconel 725 has a density of 8.31 g/cm³ (8310 kg/m³, about 0.300 lb/in³), a Young's modulus of 204 GPa and a magnetic permeability below 1.001, so it counts as non-magnetic.

Use the density to turn a forged envelope into billet weight. For a rolled ring, weight in kg = π/4 × (OD² − ID²) × height × 8.31 × 10⁻⁶, with all dimensions in millimetres.

Corrosion performance

Corrosion resistance is close to Alloy 625, about 0.01 mm/year in seawater and 0.15 mm/year in 10 % sulphuric acid at 80 °C, but with twice the strength.

For sour service the controlling document is NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-3. It lists UNS N07725 with a hardness limit and with set environmental limits for hydrogen sulphide partial pressure, chloride concentration, pH and temperature. Those limits change between editions, so check them against the current edition for your own well conditions before you fix the material selection.

Melting and forging route

Inconel 725 forgings start from double or triple melted billet, commonly EAF + VOD + ESR, VIM + VAR, or VIM + ESR + VAR, because cleanliness controls fatigue life and ultrasonic acceptance.

Any of these melting routes is acceptable for Alloy 725, and the route actually used is written on the certificate:

  • Electric arc furnace (EAF), then argon or vacuum oxygen decarburisation (AOD or VOD), then electroslag remelting (ESR) or vacuum arc remelting (VAR)
  • Vacuum induction melting (VIM), then vacuum arc remelting (VAR)
  • Vacuum induction melting (VIM), then electroslag refining (ESR) and vacuum arc remelting (VAR)

We forge with controlled reduction ratios so the deformation reaches the core of heavy sections. Alloy 725 work hardens fast and has a narrow hot-working window, so reheating between passes is planned in advance rather than decided on the floor. That is the main practical difference between forging Alloy 725 and forging a stainless grade.

Heat treatment cycle for Inconel 725

The standard cycle is solution annealing above 1040 °C with rapid cooling, air cooling preferred, then ageing at 730 °C for 8 hours, furnace cooling to 620 °C, holding a further 8 hours, then air cooling.

We run solution treatment and ageing in sequence on the same forging, with furnace charts recorded and referenced on the material certificate. Where a customer specification sets its own cycle, for example an API 6ACRA schedule or an operator's own CRA specification, we follow that cycle instead and state it on the certificate.

Chemistry for Inconel 725 comes from ASTM B805. Oilfield forgings are usually bought to API 6ACRA together with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-3. ASTM B564 does not list UNS N07725.

One thing to check on your purchase order. A lot of enquiries for Alloy 725 forgings arrive written as "ASTM B564 UNS N07725". That combination does not exist. ASTM B564 covers nickel alloy forgings, but its grade list does not include N07725. If your drawing or order says this, sort it out before manufacture, normally by buying chemistry to ASTM B805 with mechanical properties, testing and heat treatment to API 6ACRA, NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-3, or your own company specification. We raise this at quotation stage, not after the forging is made.

Testing, inspection and certification

Every Inconel 725 forging is ultrasonically tested and comes with an EN 10204 3.1 mill certificate. EN 10204 3.2 third-party certification is available on request.

We arrange third-party witnessing by TUV, BV, SGS, DNV, Lloyd's Register or an end-user inspector when asked. Tell us at enquiry stage. It changes both price and lead time, and the inspection and test plan has to be agreed before the forging is heat treated.

Machining and welding Inconel 725

Inconel 725 work hardens fast, so machine it at low cutting speed with a heavy uninterrupted feed and rigid tooling. Light fast passes that suit stainless steel will not work here.

Carbide inserts for turning and milling, HSS drills with a 118° point angle. Do not let the tool dwell in the cut. A stalled tool glazes the surface and the next pass has to cut through a work-hardened layer.

Welding

Inconel 725 is normally welded by gas tungsten arc welding with a matching filler or an ERNiCrMo-3 (Alloy 625 type) filler. Welding is usually done before ageing so that weld metal, heat-affected zone and parent metal age together and end up with comparable properties. For sour service, qualify the welding procedure against NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-3 as well as the construction code, and check the hardness of the weld and heat-affected zone, not only the parent forging.

Inconel 725 against 625, 718 and 925

Alloy 725 buys you the corrosion resistance of Alloy 625 at about double the strength. Alloy 718 is the cheaper pick when high temperature strength matters more than sour-service corrosion. Incoloy 925 suits milder duty where cost decides.

What is Inconel 725?

Corrosion resistance is close. The difference is strength. Alloy 725 is age hardenable, Alloy 625 is normally supplied annealed. Minimum 0.2 % proof stress is 827 MPa (120 ksi) for age-hardened Alloy 725 against about 415 MPa (60 ksi) for annealed Alloy 625. Buy 725 when you need 625 corrosion resistance with about twice the strength.

What is the difference between Inconel 725 and Inconel 718?

Both are age hardenable and both reach about 827 MPa minimum proof stress. Alloy 725 carries far more molybdenum, 7.0 to 9.5 % against roughly 3 %, and more chromium, so it resists pitting, crevice attack and sour environments much better. Alloy 718 is cheaper and is the usual pick where high temperature strength matters more than corrosion.

What heat treatment is used for Inconel 725 forgings?
