AISI 4145H is a medium carbon chromium molybdenum alloy steel. The H suffix means the grade is bought to a guaranteed hardenability band rather than to chemistry alone. AISI 4145H appears in ASTM A29, ASTM A304 and SAE J1268 under UNS number H41450. Carbon runs 0.42 to 0.49 percent, higher than AISI 4140, so AISI 4145H hardens deeper and reaches higher strength in heavy sections. In the quenched and tempered condition AISI 4145H is normally supplied at 285 to 341 HBW, about 30 to 36 HRC, with tensile strength near 965 MPa (140 ksi).
AISI 4145H MOD, also written AISI 4145 Modified, is the tightened version of the same steel used for API Spec 7-1 drill collars, kellys, subs and other downhole tools. Chemical composition of AISI 4145H
The chemical composition of AISI 4145H follows the H band limits of ASTM A29 and ASTM A304 together with SAE J1268. Because the H grade is sold against a Jominy end quench band, the element ranges sit a little wider than plain AISI 4145. AISI 4145H MOD narrows phosphorus and sulphur and shifts manganese and chromium, which improves cleanliness and impact toughness for downhole service.

API Spec 7-1 calls for 285 to 341 HBW and a minimum Charpy V-notch value of 40 ft·lb (54 J) at 70 °F (21 °C) on drill collar material, both guaranteed one inch below the surface. Lower hardness tempers of AISI 4145H are available where the design needs toughness ahead of maximum strength, for example the 110 ksi class at 255 to 302 HBW.

AISI 4145H is subject to temper embrittlement like other Cr-Mo steels. Cool briskly through the 375 to 575 °C range after tempering instead of holding or slow cooling in that range. AISI 4145H vs AISI 4140 vs AISI 4130
AISI 4145H, AISI 4140 and AISI 4130 are all chromium molybdenum steels and differ mainly in carbon. More carbon raises strength and hardenability and lowers weldability at the same time. Oil and gas designers therefore keep AISI 4130 for welded pressure containing bodies. AISI 4140 covers most general machinery. AISI 4145H is held back for heavy drill string parts that have to through harden.

AISI 4145H forged product forms and size range
Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. produces AISI 4145H as open die forgings and seamless rolled rings to customer drawing, rough machined or finish machined. AISI 4145H forgings are press forged with a minimum reduction ratio of 3 to 1, which breaks down the cast structure, refines grain and closes internal porosity. The works runs 1, 3, 5 and 9 tonne open die hammers alongside a 5000 tonne hydraulic press, covering 80 mm to 6000 mm diameter and 10 kg to 15000 kg per piece.

What AISI 4145H is used for
AISI 4145H is specified when a heavy section has to be hard and strong through its full thickness. Surface hardening will not do the job on a drill collar wall or a large shaft journal. That is how AISI 4145H became the standard drill string steel, and the same behaviour makes it useful for big rotating and pressure retaining parts in general heavy engineering.

The extra carbon gives AISI 4145H higher attainable strength and better through hardening in large sections, at the cost of weldability. AISI 4140 is the common general engineering grade. AISI 4145H is chosen when a heavy section has to reach 285 to 341 HBW right through.
What hardness is AISI 4145H drill collar material?
API Spec 7-1 drill collars made from AISI 4145H MOD are heat treated full length to 285 to 341 HBW, about 30 to 36 HRC, with a minimum Charpy V-notch impact value of 40 ft·lb (54 J) at 70 °F (21 °C). Both values are guaranteed one inch (25 mm) below the surface at room temperature.
Can AISI 4145H be welded?
AISI 4145H is difficult to weld and welding is normally avoided on load bearing AISI 4145H parts. The carbon equivalent is high, so welding needs preheat around 300 to 350 °C, low hydrogen consumables, controlled interpass temperature and post weld heat treatment below the tempering temperature, followed by NDT. Where a welded assembly is required, AISI 4130 or AISI 4140 is usually the better choice. Hardbanding on drill collars is a specialised process and not a general welding allowance.
Is AISI 4145H suitable for sour service under NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156?
Not at normal drill collar hardness. NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-2 caps carbon and low alloy steels at 22 HRC, about 237 HBW, for sulphide stress cracking resistance, while standard AISI 4145H ships at 30 to 36 HRC. AISI 4145H can be tempered down to meet the 22 HRC limit, but strength drops with it and the material then has to be qualified against the service conditions. State the sour service requirement on the enquiry so the correct temper and testing are quoted.
What is the European or Chinese equivalent of AISI 4145H?
There is no exact equivalent, because AISI 4145H is defined by a hardenability band and not by chemistry alone. GB/T 3077 45CrMo is the closest Chinese grade and JIS G4105 SCM445 the closest Japanese one. In Europe buyers normally fall back on EN 10083-3 42CrMo4 or 1.7225, which runs lower carbon and will not reach the same strength. Where a drawing specifies AISI 4145H, order AISI 4145H rather than substituting.
What heat treatment does AISI 4145H need?
AISI 4145H is austenitised at 815 to 860 °C, quenched in oil, polymer or water depending on section size, then tempered at 480 to 650 °C to the required hardness.
