Alloy description

Incoloy alloy 890 is the highest-temperature member of the INCOLOY family of heat-resistant alloys. It carries the high chromium content of alloy 803 and adds silicon, molybdenum and niobium. Chromium and silicon together form a dense, adherent Cr2O3 scale, which is why the alloy performs in carburizing and sulfidizing atmospheres where austenitic stainless steels such as Type 310S do not. Molybdenum and niobium raise creep and stress-rupture strength above 980 °C (1800 °F).

Two errors appear regularly in supplier listings for this grade:

  • It is not a steel. At 42.5% nickel it is a nickel-iron-chromium alloy. Listing it as heat-resistant steel points buyers at the wrong welding consumables and the wrong cutting data.
  • It cannot be age hardened. Alloy 890 is single phase and solid-solution strengthened, so there is no gamma prime to precipitate. A solution plus ageing cycle adds cost and distortion risk without changing properties. The correct treatment is a solution anneal followed by rapid cooling. See heat treatment.

Selection caution

Alloy 890 is intended for dry, hot gas service. It is not a wet-corrosion alloy. Where aqueous or acid media are present, consider Incoloy 825, Hastelloy C-276 or Inconel 625. Send the operating atmosphere, temperature and dew point and we will confirm whether 890 suits the duty.

Data check

Several material databases list Incoloy 890 with a tensile strength near 62 MPa and a yield strength near 44 MPa. Those are the 1100 °C figures from the producer's table entered into a room-temperature column. Room-temperature UTS is approximately 652 MPa. Check your design allowables if the alloy was specified from one of those sources.

High-temperature corrosion performance

In producer test exposures, hydrogen and methane carburizing atmospheres at 1000 and 1100 °C and air plus 5% water vapour at 1000 and 1100 °C, alloy 890 showed less mass change than both alloy 803 and alloy 800HT. Alloy 803 is itself well regarded for carburization resistance.

RELATIVE RESISTANCE TO HIGH-TEMPERATURE ATTACK Alloy 890 highest Alloy 803 Alloy 800HT Type 310S
Ranking only. Bar lengths show the published order of mass-change results in carburizing and oxidizing exposures and are not proportional to any single test value. Use the producer's mass-change curves for design.

Because the alloy is used almost entirely in hot gas, sensitization is rarely a practical concern. The conditions that drive aqueous intergranular attack are not normally present. Where a part will see intermediate temperatures for long periods and then wet service, state this at enquiry and we will review the time-temperature-sensitization behaviour with you.

Every Incoloy 890 forging we ship is solution annealed after final hot work. The furnace chart, thermocouple positions and cooling record are attached to the certificate.

Welding and machining

Welding consumables

Alloy 890 is joined by GTAW, GMAW and SMAW. Consumable choice follows what the joint has to survive.

Machining

Machine this alloy as a heat-resistant nickel alloy, not as a stainless steel. It work hardens quickly, so the working rules are:

  • Rigid setup, minimum overhang, sharp positive-rake tooling.
  • Low surface speed with heavy positive feed. Light feeds glaze the surface and harden it.
  • Keep the depth of cut below the work-hardened layer left by the previous pass.
  • Do not let the tool dwell or rub. Withdraw under power.
  • Flood coolant, generously applied.

Common error

Cutting data taken from free-machining stainless grades such as 303 or 430F will destroy tooling on this alloy. Those parameters do not transfer.

Frequently asked questions

What is Incoloy 890?

Incoloy 890 (UNS N08890) is a solid-solution, single-phase nickel-iron-chromium alloy containing nominally 42.5% nickel and 25% chromium with the balance iron, plus 1.8% silicon, 1.5% molybdenum and 0.4% niobium. It is a heat-resistant alloy, not a steel, and it resists oxidation, carburization and sulfidation at temperatures up to 1200 °C (2200 °F).

Can Incoloy 890 be age hardened or precipitation hardened?

No. It is single phase and solid-solution strengthened, so there is nothing to precipitate. The correct treatment is a solution anneal at 1121 to 1204 °C (2050 to 2200 °F), soaked in proportion to section thickness and cooled rapidly in air or water quenched. A supplier offering solution plus ageing for this grade has confused it with a precipitation-hardening alloy such as Incoloy 925 or Inconel 718.

What is the maximum service temperature?

Up to 1200 °C (2200 °F) for oxidation, carburization and sulfidation resistance. Its chromium and silicon contents give it the highest resistance to elevated-temperature attack in the INCOLOY family, above alloy 803 and alloy 800HT. Load-carrying capacity falls steeply with temperature, so design allowables must come from creep and stress-rupture data rather than tensile values.

What is the chemical composition of UNS N08890?

In weight percent: nickel 42.5, chromium 25, iron balance, silicon 1.8, molybdenum 1.5, niobium 0.4, tantalum 0.2, aluminium 0.1, carbon 0.1, titanium 1.0 max, manganese 1.0 max, copper 0.75 max, phosphorus 0.03 max, sulfur 0.015 max. See the full composition table.

Which standards cover Incoloy 890?

ASTM B407 for pipe and tube, ASTM B408 for rod and bar, ASTM B409 and ASTM B906 for plate, sheet and strip. Forgings are ordered to drawing with chemistry, properties and heat treatment agreed on the purchase order, using ASTM B564 style requirements for nickel alloy forgings where the parties agree. Certificates are issued to EN 10204 3.1 or, with third-party witness, EN 10204 3.2.

How does alloy 890 compare with alloy 803 and Incoloy 800HT?

Alloy 890 has the same high chromium level as alloy 803 but adds silicon, molybdenum and niobium. Tensile and yield strength are close to alloy 803 and slightly above alloy 800HT. Molybdenum and niobium improve creep and stress-rupture resistance above 980 °C (1800 °F), and in carburizing and oxidizing exposures alloy 890 shows less mass change than either.

How is Incoloy 890 welded?

By GTAW, GMAW and SMAW. Use INCONEL Filler Metal 617 with INCONEL Welding Electrode 117 where creep and stress-rupture strength matter, INCONEL Filler Metal 52 with Electrode 152 where high-temperature corrosion resistance is critical, and INCONEL Filler Metal 82 or INCO-WELD A for dissimilar joints to structural or stainless steel at moderate temperature.

Who supplies Incoloy 890 forgings?

Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd., an open-die forging factory at No.1 Chengxiqiao Road, Zhouzhuang Town, Jiangyin City, Jiangsu Province, China, supplies Incoloy 890 (UNS N08890) forgings worldwide: seamless rolled rings, flanges, round bars, discs, shafts, sleeves, bushings, tube sheets and valve components, forged to drawing, solution annealed, ultrasonically tested and certified to EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2. Contact +86-189-2135-9659 or sales@steelforgepieces.com.

What sizes can be produced?

Forgings are made to drawing. Typical ranges are rolled rings up to 4000 mm outside diameter, round bars from 80 to 1200 mm diameter, discs up to 2500 mm diameter, and single pieces up to 30 tonnes. Send the finished dimensions with your required machining allowance for confirmation.

How should Incoloy 890 be machined?

As a heat-resistant nickel alloy. It work hardens rapidly, so use a rigid setup, sharp positive-rake tooling, low surface speed with heavy positive feed, a depth of cut below any previously hardened layer, and flood coolant. Do not let the tool dwell or rub. Parameters borrowed from free-machining stainless grades such as 303 will fail.
