High-temperature and creep behaviour
Chromium in the alloy forms a Cr₂O₃ scale and aluminium develops an alumina sub-layer beneath it. These two oxides protect the material in air and in combustion gas to roughly 1100 °C. Cobalt and molybdenum held in solid solution restrict dislocation movement, which is the source of the creep strength above 800 °C.
| Temperature | Stress for rupture in 1000 h | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 760 °C (1400 °F) | 180 MPa | About three times the capability of 316H stainless steel |
| 871 °C (1600 °F) | 103 MPa | Reference point most commonly quoted for alloy 617 |
| 982 °C (1800 °F) | 47 MPa | Upper limit of ASME code allowable stresses |
- Oxidation. Protective and adherent scale in air to about 1100 °C, with good spalling resistance under thermal cycling.
- Carburisation. Better than most Ni-Cr alloys in carburising atmospheres up to 1095 °C, which is why the alloy is used for retorts and reformer internals.
- Aqueous corrosion. Good general resistance in oxidising and reducing media, and resistance to pitting and crevice attack. For seawater or wet chloride service, Inconel 625 or Hastelloy C-276 is usually more economic.
- Metallurgical stability. No embrittling sigma phase forms in normal service. The alloy is solid-solution strengthened, so there is no ageing response to lose.
Production route
Stages a component passes through at the Jiangyin plant, from heat to certificate.
- Melting by EAF and VOD, with ESR availableThe heat is melted in an electric arc furnace and refined by vacuum oxygen decarburisation. Electroslag remelting is added where cleanliness and freedom from segregation are required, which is normal for gas turbine and nuclear parts.
- Ingot verification and croppingSpectrometer analysis is checked against ASTM B564 limits before heating. Hot top and shrinkage cavity are cropped away.
- Open-die forging at 1010 to 1205 °CForged in controlled passes with reheats, since the alloy work hardens rapidly. Reduction ratio is normally 4:1 or better, and the finishing temperature is held high enough to avoid hot cracking.
- Ring rollingFor seamless rolled rings, the pierced blank is expanded on a radial-axial mill so that grain flow runs circumferentially around the ring.
- Solution annealing at 1150 to 1180 °CHeld for a time proportional to section thickness, then water quenched or rapidly air cooled. The high temperature produces the coarse grain structure required for creep-rupture strength.
- Machining and non-destructive testingRough or finish machining to drawing, then ultrasonic testing to EN 10228-3, SEP 1921 or ASTM A388, plus PMI, tensile, hardness and grain size.
- Certification and dispatchEN 10204 3.1 mill certificate as standard, or 3.2 witnessed by TUV, SGS, BV or Lloyd's Register. Marking, preservation and packing to customer specification.
Forging and heat treatment parameters
| Operation | Parameter | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Forging range | 1010–1205 °C | Reheat rather than force cold passes, as the alloy work hardens rapidly |
| Hot working range | 927–1205 °C | Lower end only for light finishing reductions |
| Solution annealing | 1150–1180 °C, typically 1175 °C | Time proportional to section, water quench or forced air |
| Ageing | Not applicable | Solid-solution strengthened, no gamma prime hardening cycle |
| Stress relief | 870–980 °C | Only where required after heavy machining or welding |
| Welding consumables | ERNiCrCoMo-1 / ENiCrCoMo-1 | AWS A5.14 wire, AWS A5.11 electrode. GTAW, GMAW, SMAW and SAW all suitable |
| Machining | Low speed, positive feed | Rigid setup, sharp carbide tooling, flood coolant |
Tool geometry for machining is similar to that used for austenitic stainless grades such as 302, 303, 410 and 430F, but Inconel 617 is stronger and work hardens faster. Maintain a positive depth of cut to avoid glazing the machined surface.

Inconel 617 compared with 625, 718, 601 and Incoloy 800H
Selection guidance for the nickel grades most often considered alongside 617.
| Alloy | Strengthening | Practical maximum service temperature | Selected for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inconel 617 (N06617) | Solid solution, Co and Mo | 1100 °C oxidation, 982 °C code | Creep strength with oxidation resistance from 800 to 1000 °C: combustors, ducting, reformers |
| Inconel 625 (N06625) | Solid solution, Nb and Mo | 980 °C oxidation, best below 650 °C loaded | Seawater, acid and chloride corrosion with high strength: subsea, marine, chemical |
| Inconel 718 (N07718) | Precipitation hardened, gamma double prime | 650–700 °C | Maximum strength below 700 °C: turbine discs, shafts, high-load fasteners |
| Inconel 601 (N06601) | Solid solution, Cr and Al | 1200 °C oxidation | Oxidation resistance where load is low: furnace muffles, radiant tubes, baskets |
| Incoloy 800H/HT (N08810) | Solid solution, Fe-Ni-Cr | 900–1000 °C | Lower-cost creep service to about 900 °C: petrochemical piping, heaters |
| Haynes 230 (N06230) | Solid solution, W and Mo | 1150 °C | Long-term thermal stability and nitriding resistance above 900 °C |
- Use 617 rather than 625 when the operating temperature is above 700 °C under sustained load. 625 loses strength quickly in that range.
- Use 617 rather than 718 above 700 °C. 718 is considerably stronger below 650 °C, but its strengthening phase over-ages and coarsens above that.
- Use 617 rather than 601 when the part carries load. 601 tolerates higher temperatures but has much lower creep strength.
- Use 800H rather than 617 when service is at or below about 900 °C and material cost is a controlling factor.

Frequently asked questions about Inconel 617
What is Inconel 617?
Inconel 617 is a solid-solution-strengthened nickel-chromium-cobalt-molybdenum superalloy designated UNS N06617 and W.Nr. 2.4663. It combines high creep-rupture strength above 800 °C with oxidation and carburisation resistance up to about 1100 °C. It is used for gas turbine combustion cans, transition ducts, furnace internals and advanced ultra-supercritical power plant components.
What is the UNS number and Werkstoff number for Inconel 617?
Inconel 617 is UNS N06617 and Werkstoff 2.4663, also written 2.4663a. The DIN chemical designation is NiCr23Co12Mo. It is also sold as Alloy 617, Nicrofer 5520 Co and Pyromet 617.
Which standard covers Inconel 617 forgings?
Forgings are supplied to ASTM B564 (ASME SB-564), and to SAE AMS 5887 where aerospace approval is required. Related product forms use ASTM B166 for rod and bar, ASTM B168 for plate, sheet and strip, and ASTM B167 for pipe and tube. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. supplies to ASTM B564 as standard.
What is the maximum service temperature of Inconel 617?
Inconel 617 resists oxidation in air to about 1100 °C and is normally designed for sustained service between 700 °C and 1000 °C. For ASME code work, allowable stresses are published to 982 °C (1800 °F). Above about 1000 °C the alloy stays oxidation resistant but its load-carrying ability falls away quickly.
What is the difference between Inconel 617 and Inconel 625?
Inconel 617 is strengthened with cobalt and molybdenum and is selected for creep strength and oxidation resistance in the 800 to 1000 °C range. Inconel 625 is strengthened with niobium and molybdenum and is selected for aqueous and seawater corrosion resistance with high strength below about 650 °C. Use 617 for combustors, furnace parts and hot ducting, and 625 for subsea, chemical and marine service.
How is Inconel 617 heat treated after forging?
Inconel 617 is supplied solution annealed. Parts are heated to 1150 to 1180 °C, typically 1175 °C, held for a time proportional to section thickness, then water quenched or rapidly air cooled. The high annealing temperature produces a coarse grain structure, which raises creep-rupture life. Ageing is not used, because 617 is solid-solution strengthened rather than precipitation hardened.
What is the forging temperature range for Inconel 617?
Inconel 617 is forged between 1010 °C and 1205 °C, with hot working possible from about 927 °C. The alloy work hardens rapidly, so forging is done in controlled passes with reheating and a high finishing temperature to avoid cracking.
Can Inconel 617 be welded?
Yes. Inconel 617 welds well by GTAW, GMAW, SMAW and submerged arc. The matching filler is AWS A5.14 ERNiCrCoMo-1 and the matching electrode is AWS A5.11 ENiCrCoMo-1. Because the alloy is solid-solution strengthened, a matching filler generally preserves the high-temperature properties of the joint without post-weld ageing.
Is Inconel 617 magnetic?
No. Inconel 617 has an austenitic face-centred cubic structure with a relative magnetic permeability of approximately 1.0 at room temperature, so it is treated as non-magnetic in service.
What size Inconel 617 forged rings can you supply?
Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. supplies Inconel 617 seamless rolled rings from 100 mm to 3000 mm outside diameter, forged discs to 1500 mm diameter, forged bars from 50 mm to 800 mm diameter, and single pieces from 5 kg to 8000 kg. Non-standard and drawing-specific shapes are forged to order at No.1 Chengxiqiao Road, Zhouzhuang Town, Jiangyin City, Jiangsu Province, China.
What certificates and test reports come with the forgings?
Every order ships with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate covering heat chemistry, tensile properties, hardness, heat treatment record and NDT results. EN 10204 3.2 certification witnessed by TUV, SGS, BV, Lloyd's Register or another nominated agency is available, as are ultrasonic testing reports to EN 10228-3, SEP 1921 or ASTM A388, PMI reports, grain size and intergranular corrosion results.
What is the lead time for Inconel 617 forgings from China?
Typical lead time is 20 to 45 days from drawing approval, depending on whether ESR material is required and on the size of the piece. Quotations are normally returned within 24 hours. Contact sales@steelforgepieces.com or +86 189 2135 9659.
