What is Inconel 706?

Inconel 706, also written as Alloy 706 and registered as UNS N09706 (Werkstoff 2.4615), is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-iron-chromium superalloy. It was developed as an easier-to-fabricate version of Inconel 718. Nickel plus cobalt runs 39 to 44 percent and chromium 14.5 to 17.5 percent, which gives the alloy its oxidation and corrosion resistance. Niobium at 2.5 to 3.3 percent and titanium at 1.5 to 2.0 percent form the gamma double prime and gamma prime precipitates that carry the strength. Iron makes up the balance, so the alloy costs less than fully nickel-based grades.

Alloy 706 hardens slowly as it passes through the ageing temperature range. This is the reason it resists post-weld strain-age cracking, and the reason it is used for large welded and bolted rotating assemblies in land-based gas turbines. It contains no molybdenum and less niobium than 718, so it also cuts and drills faster. On parts that need heavy machining after forging, that lowers the finished cost.

We supply Alloy 706 as forged product only: open-die forgings and seamless rolled rings. Forging closes porosity and aligns grain flow with the main stress direction in discs, shafts and rings.

Why Alloy 706 is specified

  • Precipitation-hardened 706 keeps its room-temperature strength level up to about 705 °C (1300 °F), which covers turbine disc and spacer duty.
  • The slow precipitation response lets thick welded sections cool and be handled before hardening takes hold, so strain-age cracking is not a problem.
  • It machines with conventional carbide tooling and water-based coolants. Tool life is better than on Inconel 718.
  • It resists chloride-ion and hydroxyl-ion stress-corrosion cracking. Stressed specimens survived 30 days in boiling 42 percent magnesium chloride without cracking.
  • It segregates less than higher-niobium grades, so it can be made in the large ingots that multi-tonne turbine discs need.
  • The iron-rich balance and the absence of molybdenum make it cheaper than 718 or Waspaloy for the same part.

Alloy 706 is not suitable for strongly reducing acids. Test data shows poor resistance in boiling 50 percent sulphuric acid, and in boiling 38 percent and concentrated hydrochloric acid. For those services use Hastelloy C-276 or Alloy 59.

Inconel 706 vs Inconel 718

Buyers often compare these two grades because their strength levels overlap. Use 718 when the part needs the highest strength or aerospace qualification. Use 706 when the part is large, heavily machined, welded, or when cost matters.

Heat treatment and the Alloy 706 temperature map

Two heat-treatment routes are in use. Route A adds a stabilising soak and gives the best combination of strength and notch ductility for turbine discs. Route B omits the stabilise and is used where cycle time matters more. Tell us which route your drawing requires, because it affects both lead time and price.

How Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal forges Alloy 706

The route below is what we run for every Inconel 706 order. Each stage produces a record that goes into the documentation pack.

  1. Melt route and billet sourcing

Ingot or billet is bought only against documented double-melt VIM plus ESR or VIM plus VAR practice. Single-melt material is not accepted for rotating parts because of segregation risk.

  2. Billet preparation and pre-heat

Surfaces are conditioned and the billet is soaked to a uniform through-temperature. Under-soaked nickel alloy cracks on the first blow.

  3. Open-die forging, 983 to 1149 °C

Hydraulic press forging with controlled reduction ratios and reheats. Grain flow is directed along the hoop for rings and along the axis for shafts.

  4. Ring rolling or upsetting to shape

Seamless rings are pierced and rolled to the finished envelope. Discs are upset and punched. Both give continuous grain flow.

  5. Solution treatment, stabilise and ageing

Charged in calibrated furnaces to Route A or Route B, with recorded time and temperature charts for the whole load.

  6. Rough or finish machining

Supplied as-forged, rough machined with an agreed allowance, or finish machined to drawing tolerance.

  7. Non-destructive and mechanical testing

Ultrasonic testing to EN 10228-3, SEP 1921 or ASTM A388. PT or MT as specified. Tensile, hardness and grain size testing from prolongation.

  8. Marking, certification and packing

Hard-stamped heat number and part identification, EN 10204 3.1 certificate, or 3.2 counter-signed by a third party such as TUV, BV, SGS or Lloyd's, then seaworthy packing.

Frequently asked questions about Inconel 706

What is Inconel 706?

Inconel 706 is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-iron-chromium superalloy designated UNS N09706 and Werkstoff 2.4615. It contains 39 to 44 percent nickel plus cobalt, 14.5 to 17.5 percent chromium, 2.5 to 3.3 percent niobium plus tantalum and 1.5 to 2.0 percent titanium, with iron as the balance. Its strength is comparable to Inconel 718, but it is easier to machine and weld.

What is the difference between Inconel 706 and Inconel 718?

Inconel 718 contains 50 to 55 percent nickel, 2.8 to 3.3 percent molybdenum and 4.75 to 5.5 percent niobium, which makes it stronger but harder to machine. Inconel 706 has no molybdenum, less niobium and more iron, so it machines faster, costs less per kilogram, resists post-weld strain-age cracking better, and can be produced in the large ingots that multi-tonne turbine discs require. Use 718 for maximum strength and aerospace qualification. Use 706 for large, heavily machined or welded parts.

What is the UNS number for Inconel 706?

The UNS number for Inconel 706 is N09706. Its German material number is W.Nr. 2.4615, and it is also called Alloy 706 and NiFe38Cr16Nb.

What is the maximum service temperature of Inconel 706?

Precipitation-hardened Inconel 706 keeps its high strength up to about 705 degrees Celsius, or 1300 degrees Fahrenheit. Above that temperature the strengthening precipitates coarsen and strength falls away, so 705 degrees Celsius is the practical design limit for load-bearing parts.

Which standards and specifications cover Inconel 706 forgings?

Inconel 706 forgings are commonly ordered to AMS 5701, AMS 5702 and AMS 5703, with AMS 5605 and AMS 5606 covering sheet and plate. ASTM B637 covers precipitation-hardening nickel alloy bars, forgings and forging stock for high-temperature service. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. also forges to customer drawings and to end-user specifications on request.

What is the correct heat treatment for Inconel 706?

Two routes are standard. The three-step route is solution treatment at 925 to 1010 degrees Celsius with air cool, stabilising at 845 degrees Celsius for 3 hours with air cool, then ageing at 720 degrees Celsius for 8 hours, furnace cooling at 55 degrees Celsius per hour to 620 degrees Celsius, holding 8 hours and air cooling. The two-step route omits the 845 degree stabilise. The three-step route gives better notch ductility for turbine discs.

What is the density of Inconel 706?

The density of Inconel 706 is 8.05 grams per cubic centimetre, or 0.291 pounds per cubic inch. Its melting point is about 1360 degrees Celsius and its modulus of elasticity is about 210 GPa.

Is Inconel 706 weldable?

Yes. Inconel 706 can be joined by gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, shielded metal arc and submerged arc welding. Because it hardens slowly through the ageing range, it resists post-weld strain-age cracking, which is one reason it is chosen for large welded turbine assemblies.

Can Inconel 706 be machined?

Yes, and this is one of its main advantages over Inconel 718. Alloy 706 machines with the conventional methods used for iron-based alloys, using commercial coolants. Water-based coolants are used for high-speed grinding, milling and turning. Tool life is better than on Inconel 718.

What forged shapes can be made in Inconel 706?

Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. produces Inconel 706 as seamless rolled rings with outside diameters from 200 to 4000 mm, forged discs from 150 to 2500 mm diameter, shafts and spindles from 80 to 1200 mm diameter, round bars from 20 to 800 mm diameter, flanges, sleeves, bushings, hollow bars, blocks, tube sheets and nozzles, in single-piece weights from 20 kg to 15 000 kg.

Who supplies Inconel 706 open-die forgings in China?

Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. is an open-die forging factory at No. 1 Chengxiqiao Road, Zhouzhuang Town, Jiangyin City, Jiangsu Province, China, producing Inconel 706 forged rings, discs, shafts, flanges and bars to drawing. Enquiries go to sales@steelforgepieces.com or 0086-189-2135-9659. Jiangyin is in the Yangtze River Delta, within two hours of Shanghai port, which keeps export logistics short for heavy forgings.

What certificates are supplied with Inconel 706 forgings?

EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates are standard, covering chemical analysis, mechanical test results, heat-treatment charts, NDT reports and dimensional records. EN 10204 3.2 certificates counter-signed by TUV, BV, SGS or Lloyd's Register are available on request, as is NACE MR0175 and ISO 15156 documentation.

Is there a minimum order quantity for Inconel 706 forgings?

There is no fixed minimum quantity and single prototype pieces are accepted, although the price per piece falls with quantity because tooling, set-up and furnace charges are shared. Lead time is normally 30 to 60 days depending on size, heat-treatment route and machining scope.
