Nickel-base superalloy / Open-die forgings
Refractaloy 26 (R26) Forgings R-26 / AISI 690 / Z6NKCDT38 / ASTM A453 Gr.665 / UNS S66545
Refractaloy 26 is a precipitation-hardening nickel-chromium-cobalt-iron superalloy. Nominal composition is 35-39% nickel, 18-22% cobalt and 16-20% chromium, with 2.5-3.5% molybdenum, 2.5-3.0% titanium and the balance iron. Strength comes from gamma prime precipitation during a double ageing treatment. The alloy holds high creep rupture strength together with high creep rupture ductility, and resists stress relaxation. Its thermal expansion is close to that of austenitic stainless steel, so it is used mainly for steam and gas turbine bolting and for rotating parts working at about 650-700 °C. It is supplied to ASTM A453/A453M Grade 665, UNS S66545. Other names in use are R26, R-26, AISI 690 and Z6NKCDT38.

Mechanical and physical properties
Refractaloy 26 has both high creep rupture strength and high creep rupture ductility, which is why it is used as a high-temperature bolt material. It is an austenitic alloy with a relatively large coefficient of thermal expansion, and is normally matched with austenitic turbine casings rather than ferritic ones.

Note: the values above are indicative, for forged bar in the fully heat treated condition. Guaranteed values are those of the governing specification and of the class ordered. ASTM A453 Grade 665 Class A and Class B differ in strength level. Design allowables should be taken from the specification or from the OEM. The mill test certificate issued with the order is the controlling document.
Behaviour at temperature
Published work on service-exposed R26 turbine bolts reports good creep strength and stress relaxation resistance at 680 °C, and this is the main reason the alloy is used in steam and gas turbines. Suppliers commonly quote useful strength to about 815 °C for shorter exposure. After very long service, tens of thousands of hours, R26 bolts can show hardness drift and microstructural change, and a rejuvenation heat treatment is sometimes applied. We can heat treat to a customer-supplied rejuvenation cycle on request.
Heat treatment of Refractaloy 26
Two cycles are in common use. Which one applies depends on the governing specification and on the section thickness of the part. The cycle is confirmed in writing before production starts.
| Stage | Cycle A, common current practice | Cycle B, older North American practice |
|---|---|---|
| Solution treat | 1025 °C (1877 °F), rapid cool | 1150 °C (2100 °F) / 1 h, oil or water quench |
| First ageing | 815 °C (1499 °F) / 20 h | 815 °C (1500 °F) / 20 h |
| Transition | Cool | Slow cool to 730 °C (1350 °F) |
| Second ageing | 730 °C (1346 °F) / 20 h, air cool | 730 °C (1350 °F) / 5 h, air cool |
Soak times are set by section thickness. Furnaces are surveyed and thermocouples calibrated. We can work to AMS 2750 pyrometry requirements when the order calls for it.
Machining and fabrication
Refractaloy 26 falls in ISO machining group S, heat-resistant superalloys, with a machinability rating of about 15-25% of free-cutting steel. Published starting points are 60-100 m/min (200-330 SFM) for turning, 45-75 m/min for milling and 45-75 m/min for drilling. Ground carbide inserts are recommended, with a rake angle of 13-18 degrees, a neutral land of 0.10-0.20 mm and edge honing of 0.02-0.05 mm. Rigid clamping and short tool overhang give more benefit than higher cutting speed. On large parts, rough machining before the final age keeps tool cost down.
The alloy can be welded with matching filler under a controlled procedure that includes preheat and post-weld heat treatment. Where a fabricated assembly can be replaced by a single forged part, the forging is usually the better option for a rotating or pressure-retaining component.

Applications
- Steam turbine bolting. High-temperature studs, bolts and nuts where stress relaxation resistance sets the retorque interval.
- Gas turbine hot section. Wheels, discs, spacers and fasteners.
- Turbine blades and blade roots. Applications where creep rupture ductility matters as much as strength.
- Valve internals. Spindles, stems and seats on high-temperature steam valves.
- Gland sealing rings. Steam turbine sealing components.
- Pressure vessel and flange fasteners. Under ASTM A453, where expansion has to match austenitic stainless steel.

Frequently asked questions
What is Refractaloy 26?
Refractaloy 26 (R26, R-26) is a precipitation-hardening nickel-chromium-cobalt-iron superalloy with nominally 35-39% Ni, 18-22% Co and 16-20% Cr, plus 2.5-3.5% Mo and 2.5-3.0% Ti, balance iron. It is strengthened by gamma prime precipitation during double ageing and is used mainly for steam and gas turbine bolting and rotating parts. It is supplied under ASTM A453/A453M Grade 665, UNS S66545.
What is the UNS number for Refractaloy 26?
UNS S66545, as ASTM A453/A453M Grade 665. It is also cross-referenced as SAE/AISI 690 and AFNOR Z6NKCDT38.
What is the heat treatment for Refractaloy 26?
Solution treat at 1025 °C with rapid cooling, then double age: 20 hours at 815 °C followed by 20 hours at 730 °C, air cool. An older North American practice solution treats at about 1150 °C (2100 °F) for one hour with an oil or water quench, ages 20 hours at 1500 °F, slow cools to 1350 °F and holds 5 hours before air cooling. The cycle used on your order is confirmed in writing before production.
What temperature can Refractaloy 26 be used at?
Published research on service-exposed R26 turbine bolts reports good creep strength and stress relaxation resistance at 680 °C. Suppliers commonly quote useful strength up to about 815 °C for shorter exposure. Design allowables should be taken from the governing specification or from the OEM.
What is the difference between Refractaloy 26 and A286?
Both are ASTM A453 bolting alloys. A286, Grade 660, UNS S66286, is iron base with about 24-27% nickel and no deliberate cobalt. Refractaloy 26, Grade 665, UNS S66545, carries 35-39% nickel plus 18-22% cobalt. The extra nickel and cobalt give better creep strength and stress relaxation resistance at the top of the bolting range, at a higher raw material cost. Where the duty sits inside the A286 range, A286 is usually the cheaper option.
Is Refractaloy 26 difficult to machine?
Yes. It is ISO group S with a machinability of about 15-25% of free-cutting steel. Start turning at 60-100 m/min (200-330 SFM) with sharp ground carbide, 13-18 degree rake, a 0.10-0.20 mm neutral land and 0.02-0.05 mm honing. Rigid setups and short overhangs give more benefit than higher speed. Rough machine before the final age where the geometry allows.
What product forms and sizes can you supply?
Round, square and flat bar; hollow bar, sleeves and bushings; seamless rolled rings; gland seal rings; blocks, discs and plates; turbine wheels and impeller blanks; valve spindles and stems; and double-end studs. Round bar 20-800 mm, rings 100-3000 mm outside diameter, single pieces 1-5000 kg. All items are forged to drawing. Send the print and we will confirm what is practical.
