What is Rene 41
Rene 41 is a nickel-based high temperature alloy developed by General Electric. Strength comes from gamma prime precipitates formed by about 3 percent titanium and 1.5 percent aluminium, with solid solution strengthening from roughly 10 percent molybdenum and 11 percent cobalt. Small controlled additions of boron and carbon pin the grain boundaries.
The alloy resists oxidation and jet engine combustion gases up to 982 C (1800 F). It was used for the outer shell of the Mercury space capsule. Current applications include afterburner parts, turbine casings and wheels, high temperature bolting and springs, rocket engine hardware and missile structures.
Two properties affect every Rene 41 order. The alloy work hardens quickly and is hard to machine, and it is sensitive to strain age cracking during welding. Both are covered under machining, forming and welding below.

Heat treatment of Rene 41 forgings
Mechanical properties change with the solution and ageing treatment, so the route is selected from the property the part needs. A higher solution temperature gives better room temperature ductility and creep rupture strength. A lower solution temperature gives higher tensile strength. Both routes are run in house and recorded on the certificate.
| Route | Solution treat | Age | Selected for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1, high solution | 1177 C (2150 F), 4 h, air cool | 899 C (1650 F), 4 h, air cool | Ductility and creep rupture strength |
| 2, low solution | 1079 C (1975 F), 4 h, air cool | 760 C (1400 F), 16 h, air cool | Maximum tensile strength |
Precipitation hardening on its own: heat to 760 C (1400 F), hold 16 hours, air cool. Hardness lands in the Rockwell C 40 to 45 range. Where a customer intends to finish machine before ageing, we ship in the solution treated condition and the machining is easier.
Forging, melting and size capability
Rene 41 is hot worked from about 1149 C (2100 F) and finished between 1010 C and 1038 C (1850 to 1900 F). Forging below the finishing temperature risks cracking, so reheats are planned into every sequence.
| Melting route | EAF plus VOD plus ESR, electroslag remelted. Vacuum melted material to AMS 5713 available on request. |
|---|---|
| Forged rings, outside diameter | 120 to 3000 mm |
| Forged rings, height | up to 800 mm |
| Forged bars, diameter | 30 to 800 mm |
| Shafts, length | up to 6000 mm |
| Single piece weight | 5 kg to 8000 kg |
| Hot working temperature | start 1149 C (2100 F), finish 1010 to 1038 C (1850 to 1900 F) |
| Supply condition | As forged, rough machined, solution treated, or solution treated and aged |
| Machining allowance | Agreed per drawing. Near net contour forging available for high cost alloys. |
Rene 41 is an expensive alloy per kilogram, so we normally quote a near net contour forging rather than a rectangular blank. On rings and discs this reduces input weight against machining from solid.

Machining, forming and welding Rene 41
Machining
Rene 41 work hardens quickly and is among the harder nickel superalloys to cut. Use tungsten carbide tooling, low surface speeds and steady feed rates. Keep setups rigid and do not let the tool dwell. Use flood coolant throughout. Rough machining is easier in the solution treated condition, before ageing.
Cold forming
Cold forming is possible but needs high force, and springback is large. Because the alloy work hardens quickly, several small reductions with intermediate anneals work better than one large reduction.
Welding
Rene 41 is sensitive to strain age cracking because of its aluminium and titanium content. Sound welds are made by resistance and electron beam methods. For GTAW, use DC straight polarity with good joint fit up and copper backing bars or water cooled fixtures. The material should be fully solution treated before welding. After welding, solution treat with rapid heating and cooling through the 649 C to 871 C (1200 to 1600 F) range, then age.

What are the mechanical properties of Rene 41 forgings?
Solution treated and aged, Rene 41 has a tensile strength of 1420 MPa minimum (206 ksi minimum), a 0.2 percent offset yield strength of 1062 MPa minimum (154 ksi minimum) and elongation in 4D of 14 percent minimum. Hardness after precipitation hardening is Rockwell C 40 to 45.
What is the maximum service temperature of Rene 41?
Rene 41 keeps useful strength up to about 982 C (1800 F) and resists jet engine combustion gases to the same temperature. Its highest strength is in the 649 C to 982 C (1200 to 1800 F) band. Above about 870 C (1600 F) tensile strength falls off sharply, so continuous load bearing service is normally limited to below that point.
Which Rene 41 forged shapes can Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal supply?
Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. forges Rene 41 into seamless rolled rings, forged rings, flanges, discs and pancakes, stepped and straight shafts, spindles, sleeves, bushings, hollow bars, tube sheets, blocks, nozzles, valve bodies and seat rings, and round or square bars. How is Rene 41 heat treated?
Two treatments are in common use. The high solution route is 1177 C (2150 F) for 4 hours, air cool, then age at 899 C (1650 F) for 4 hours, air cool. This gives better room temperature ductility and creep rupture strength. The low solution route is 1079 C (1975 F) for 4 hours, air cool, then age at 760 C (1400 F) for 16 hours, air cool. This gives higher tensile strength. Precipitation hardening at 760 C (1400 F) for 16 hours brings hardness to Rockwell C 40 to 45.
Is Rene 41 difficult to machine?
Yes. Rene 41 work hardens quickly, so it is one of the harder nickel superalloys to machine. Tungsten carbide tooling, low surface speeds, rigid setups, heavy positive feed and flood coolant are recommended. Do not allow the tool to dwell. Rough machining is easier in the solution treated condition, before ageing.
Can Rene 41 be welded?
Rene 41 is weldable but sensitive to strain age cracking because of its aluminium and titanium content. Weld in the fully solution treated condition, use resistance or electron beam welding where possible, and for GTAW use DC straight polarity with good joint fit up and copper backing or water cooled fixtures. After welding, solution treat with rapid heating and cooling through the 649 C to 871 C (1200 to 1600 F) range, then age.
What is the density of Rene 41?
The density of Rene 41 is 8.25 g/cm3 (0.298 lb/in3). Its melting range is approximately 1307 C to 1343 C (2385 to 2450 F) and its modulus of elasticity at room temperature is about 218 GPa (31.6 x 10^3 ksi).
How does Rene 41 compare with Waspaloy and Inconel 718?
Rene 41 has the highest room temperature tensile strength of the three when fully aged, about 1420 MPa minimum, and the highest cobalt and molybdenum content, but it is the hardest to weld and machine. Waspaloy has better weldability and similar high temperature capability with lower strength. Inconel 718 is the easiest to weld and machine and the lowest in cost, but its useful strength falls off above about 650 C (1200 F), well below Rene 41.
