What is 1.4944?
1.4944 is austenitic in all conditions of heat treatment. Strength comes from ageing, which precipitates gamma prime Ni3(Ti,Al) through the matrix. There is no martensite transformation, so the alloy stays close to non-magnetic after hardening. Tensile strength after ageing sits around 960 MPa, which is why the grade turns up in gas turbine parts, high temperature bolting and oilfield hardware.
The alloy work hardens quickly and has a narrow forging temperature range, so it is hot worked on presses or ring rolling mills rather than cold formed. Finish forging temperature matters, and so does the time between forging and solution treatment. Parts that are forged too cold, or left too long before treatment, tend to fail at ultrasonic inspection.
Is 1.4944 the same as A-286?
Most enquiries that ask for A-286 are asking for 1.4980 / X6NiCrTiMoVB25-15-2, which carries 1.0 to 1.5 percent molybdenum. 1.4944 has no molybdenum specified. The two will not pass the same certificate check, so please confirm which number appears on your specification before the order is placed.

Titanium forms the strengthening phase during ageing. The small boron addition improves stress rupture life at temperature. Both are held to narrow limits.

Heat treatment
Solution treatment is carried out at about 980 C and followed by an oil or water quench. Ageing then runs at about 720 C for 16 hours with air cooling. The ageing step forms the gamma prime phase that gives the alloy its strength. Furnace charts are supplied with the certificate when the order asks for them.

What is 1.4944 material?

What is the difference between 1.4944 and 1.4980?
Molybdenum. 1.4980 contains 1.0 to 1.5 percent, which raises strength and improves resistance to pitting where chlorides are present. 1.4944 has none specified and costs less. For high temperature bolting and turbine hardware where the specification does not call for molybdenum, 1.4944 is the usual choice.
What is the maximum service temperature of 1.4944?
About 700 C, or 1290 F. Grades in the A-286 group keep useful strength and oxidation resistance to roughly that point. Above it creep becomes the limiting factor, and a nickel base alloy such as Inconel 718, Waspaloy or Nimonic 80A is normally specified.
How is 1.4944 heat treated?
Solution treat at about 980 C, then quench in oil or water. Age at about 720 C for 16 hours and air cool. Ageing forms the gamma prime phase Ni3(Ti,Al) that carries the strength. The exact cycle follows the ordering specification and is recorded on the mill certificate.
