Open-die forged rings, seamless rolled rings, flanges, bars, discs, tube sheets and valve components in Alloy 31, solution annealed and water quenched, 10 kg to 15,000 kg.
Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. forges Alloy 31 (UNS N08031, W.Nr. 1.4562, X1NiCrMoCu32-28-7) into rings, seamless rolled rings, flanges, round bars, discs, tube sheets, shafts, sleeves and valve bodies. The works have been in Jiangyin, Jiangsu Province, China since 1997.
Alloy 31 is a super austenitic Ni-Fe-Cr-Mo alloy containing roughly 31% nickel, 27% chromium, 6.5% molybdenum and 0.2% nitrogen. Its PREN is around 52. It resists sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid and chloride bearing media.
We forge it from 100 mm to 6,000 mm diameter and 10 kg to 15,000 kg, solution anneal at 1,150 to 1,180 °C with a water quench, ultrasonically test every piece to ASTM A388 or EN 10228-3, and certify to EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2.

MaterialWhat is Alloy 31?
Alloy 31 is a super austenitic iron-nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy with nitrogen and copper additions, standardised as UNS N08031 and W.Nr. 1.4562. The nitrogen content of 0.15 to 0.25% stabilises the austenite and slows sigma phase precipitation, so the alloy can carry 6 to 7% molybdenum and still be worked.
Buyers usually compare it against 6Mo grades such as 254 SMO and against nickel alloys such as Alloy 625. It handles acid better than the 6Mo grades and costs less than Alloy 625, which is why it turns up in specifications where a 6Mo grade has not lasted and Alloy 625 is too expensive.

Melting route: EAF, then AOD or VOD refining, then ESR where the order calls for electroslag remelted material. Carbon is held at 0.015% max and sulphur at 0.010% max because both drive intergranular attack in the acid service this alloy is bought for.

CorrosionWhy Alloy 31 gets specified
Most customers buy Alloy 31 for corrosion resistance rather than strength. Four figures usually decide the specification:
- Sulphuric acid: good resistance across a broad concentration range up to about 80 °C, including contaminated technical grade acid.
- Phosphoric acid: resists both corrosion and erosion corrosion in wet process acid carrying chlorides and fluorides.
- Pitting: critical pitting temperature of 85 °C in 10% FeCl3·6H2O, tested to ASTM G48 method A.
- Sensitisation: tested to ASTM G28 method A and SEP 1877 II, Alloy 31 only sensitises after long exposure, around 10 hours at 650 °C or 100 hours at 590 °C.

PREN ranks pitting resistance in chloride media. It is not a guarantee of performance in a particular process stream, so check grade selection against your actual service conditions.
ManufacturingHow we forge and heat treat Alloy 31
Alloy 31 has a narrow hot working window and work hardens quickly. Of the whole route, the quench is the step that decides whether the customer gets the corrosion resistance they paid for.
- Material. EAF plus AOD or VOD refined billet, ESR remelted where the specification requires it. Every heat is PMI checked before forging.
- Forging. Worked from about 1,150 °C with the finishing temperature held above roughly 1,000 °C, reheated as needed. Open-die hammers of 1, 3, 6 and 9 tonnes, a 4,500 t hydraulic press, and 3 m and 6 m seamless ring rolling mills.
- Solution annealing. 1,150 to 1,180 °C. Soak time follows section thickness: roughly 3 min per mm up to 10 mm, 30 min plus 2 min per mm from 10 to 20 mm, and 50 min plus 1 min per mm above 20 mm.
- Quench. Water quench, straight out of the furnace. Air cooling a heavy Alloy 31 section precipitates sigma and chi phases at the grain boundaries and costs both corrosion resistance and toughness. Furnace charts go with the certificate.
- Surface. Pickled and passivated to a clean, metallic bright condition. The alloy only reaches its rated corrosion resistance in that state.
- Machining. Rough or finish machined to your drawing.

FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Alloy 31 (UNS N08031)?
Alloy 31 is a super austenitic iron-nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy with nitrogen and copper additions, designated UNS N08031, W.Nr. 1.4562 and X1NiCrMoCu32-28-7. It contains about 31% nickel, 27% chromium, 6.5% molybdenum and 0.2% nitrogen, which gives a PREN above 48 and strong resistance to sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid and chloride bearing media.
Is Alloy 31 a stainless steel or a nickel alloy?
It sits between the two. With about 31% nickel it is classified as a super austenitic stainless steel under EN as 1.4562, but it carries a UNS N-series number, N08031, and appears in ASTM nickel alloy specifications such as B564 and B649. Buyers normally specify it as a nickel alloy grade, and it has to be forged and heat treated like one.
Which ASTM standards apply to Alloy 31 forgings?
ASTM B564 and ASME SB-564 cover nickel alloy forgings in UNS N08031. ASTM B462 covers forged or rolled N08031 pipe flanges, forged fittings, valves and parts. ASTM B649 and B581 cover bar and wire, and ASTM B625 covers plate, sheet and strip. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. forges Alloy 31 to any of these, and to NACE MR0175 and ISO 15156 when sour service is specified.
ASTM B637 is sometimes quoted for this grade in error. It covers precipitation hardenable nickel alloys such as 718 and X-750 and does not apply to N08031.
What is the PREN of Alloy 31 compared with 904L and 6Mo grades?
Using PREN = %Cr + 3.3 × %Mo + 16 × %N, Alloy 31 reaches about 52, and suppliers commonly quote 48 as a minimum. AL-6XN is about 46, 254 SMO about 43, 2507 duplex about 43, 904L about 36 and 316L about 25. Alloy 31 is normally chosen where a 6Mo grade has reached its service limit.
What heat treatment do Alloy 31 forgings need?
Solution annealing at 1,150 to 1,180 °C followed by a water quench. Rapid quenching matters: slow cooling or air cooling lets sigma and chi phases precipitate at the grain boundaries, which costs corrosion resistance and toughness. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. water quenches every Alloy 31 forging and can supply the furnace chart with the certificate.
What is the largest Alloy 31 forging you can produce?
Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. forges Alloy 31 from 100 mm to 6,000 mm outside diameter, 10 kg to 15,000 kg single piece weight, and up to 12,000 mm in length, using 1, 3, 6 and 9 tonne open-die hammers, a 4,500 tonne hydraulic press, and 3 m and 6 m seamless ring rolling mills.
Can you supply EN 10204 3.2 and NACE MR0175 certification for Alloy 31?
Yes. Every Alloy 31 forging carries an EN 10204 3.1 mill certificate as standard, and EN 10204 3.2 witnessed by TUV, BV or SGS on request. NACE MR0175 and ISO 15156 compliance, ASTM G28 method A intergranular corrosion testing, ASTM G48 method A pitting testing and PMI are available when specified on the order.
