What is NCF 800H?

NCF 800H is the Japanese Industrial Standard designation for a nickel-iron-chromium heat resisting alloy containing nominally 30-35 % nickel, 19-23 % chromium and a deliberately controlled carbon content of 0.05-0.10 %, with iron as the balance. The same material appears on drawings as Alloy 800H, UNS N08810, W.Nr. 1.4958 and X5NiCrAlTi31-20.

The letter H does not indicate a heat treatment condition. It denotes a separate grade. Two things separate NCF 800H from plain NCF 800: carbon is held in the upper part of the alloy 800 range rather than run low, and the material is solution annealed near 1150 °C instead of about 980 °C so that the grain coarsens to ASTM 5 or coarser. Together these raise creep and stress-rupture strength substantially above 600 °C.

NCF 800H resists oxidation, carburisation and nitridation, and remains metallurgically stable through long high-temperature holds. It also has good resistance to chloride stress-corrosion cracking. Typical service includes ethylene furnaces, steam reformers, heat-treatment furnace internals, petrochemical process heaters, nuclear steam generators and high-temperature pressure vessels.

Service temperature: where NCF 800H sits

Selection guide: below about 600 °C plain alloy 800 is sufficient; 600 to 800 °C is normally NCF 800H; above about 800 °C with sustained creep loading, 800HT is usually specified. ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code allowable stresses for alloy 800H run to 816 °C (1500 °F). Design temperature must be established from your governing code by your design engineer.

NCF 800H chemical composition

Composition limits for NCF 800H under JIS G4902. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. reports the actual heat analysis for every melt on the EN 10204 certificate that accompanies the forging.

Max0.101.001.500.0300.015 35.0023.000.750.600.60Balance

The 0.05 % carbon minimum is the key requirement of the H grade. A heat that analyses below 0.05 % C may still satisfy plain alloy 800 but cannot be certified as NCF 800H / UNS N08810.

NCF 800H standards and equivalent designations

NCF 800H, Alloy 800H, UNS N08810 and W.Nr. 1.4958 all describe the same alloy. The designation used on a purchase order depends on the specifying code rather than on the material itself.

How we make NCF 800H forgings

  1. Melting. EAF + VOD as standard. ESR remelt is available where the specification or the application demands lower segregation and improved cleanliness. This is common for heavy sections and for nuclear or critical-service parts.
  2. Ingot inspection and conditioning. Hot-top discard, surface conditioning, and heat analysis confirmed before the ingot is released to the forge.
  3. Open-die forging. Upset and draw to achieve the forging ratio agreed for the part, worked within the alloy's hot-working range so that the wrought structure closes porosity and refines the as-cast grain. Rings are ring-rolled or mandrel-forged to produce a continuous circumferential grain flow.
  4. Solution annealing. Approximately 1120-1180 °C followed by rapid cooling. This produces the ASTM 5 or coarser grain size the H grade requires. Ageing after solution treatment is carried out where the customer specification calls for it.
  5. Rough machining. Turned, bored or milled to the agreed machining allowance so that ultrasonic testing is carried out on a clean, representative surface.
  6. Testing and NDT. Mechanical testing, hardness, grain size, and ultrasonic testing to the ordered class. Dimensional inspection against the drawing.
  7. Certification and despatch. EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2, marking as specified, preservation and packing for sea or air freight.

Testing, inspection and certification

Non-destructive testing

  • Ultrasonic testing to EN 10228-3, SEP 1921 or ASTM A388, to the quality class stated on your order.
  • Liquid penetrant (PT) to ASTM E165 / ASME V. This is the normal surface method for this austenitic, non-magnetic alloy.
  • Magnetic particle (MT) is not applicable to NCF 800H: the alloy is austenitic and non-magnetic. If your specification calls for MT on this grade, tell us and we will raise it as a technical query before production.
  • Visual and dimensional inspection against the released drawing.

Destructive and supplementary testing

  • Room-temperature tensile, hardness (HB / HV), elongation and reduction of area
  • Elevated-temperature tensile and stress-rupture testing
  • Charpy V-notch impact testing at specified temperature
  • Grain size determination to ASTM E112, confirming ASTM 5 or coarser
  • Intergranular corrosion testing (ASTM A262 practices, where specified)
  • Micro / macro examination, PMI (positive material identification)

Certification

EN 10204 3.1 mill certificate is supplied as standard with every NCF 800H forging, showing heat number, full chemical analysis, mechanical results, heat-treatment record and NDT report.

EN 10204 3.2 certification witnessed by TÜV, BV, SGS, Lloyd's Register or your own inspector is available. Please state the inspection body at enquiry stage so witness points can be built into the schedule.

NCF 800H frequently asked questions

What is NCF 800H?

NCF 800H is the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) designation for a nickel-iron-chromium heat resisting alloy containing nominally 30-35 % nickel, 19-23 % chromium and a controlled carbon content of 0.05-0.10 %, with the balance iron. It is the same material as Alloy 800H, UNS N08810 and W.Nr. 1.4958. The controlled carbon and a coarse grain size of ASTM 5 or coarser give it far better creep and stress-rupture strength above 600 °C than standard Alloy 800.

Is NCF 800H the same as Incoloy 800H?

Yes, they are the same alloy under different naming systems. NCF 800H is the JIS designation, Alloy 800H is the generic ASTM designation, UNS N08810 is the unified number and W.Nr. 1.4958 is the European material number. Incoloy® is a registered trademark of Special Metals Corporation, so a purchase order specifying "ASTM B564 UNS N08810" does not require Special Metals brand material. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. supplies forgings certified against the UNS, JIS or W.Nr. designation.

What is the difference between NCF 800, NCF 800H and NCF 800HT?

All three share the same base composition of about 20 % chromium, 30 % nickel and balance iron. NCF 800 (UNS N08800, W.Nr. 1.4876) has low carbon and is normally selected below 600 °C. NCF 800H (UNS N08810, W.Nr. 1.4958) has carbon controlled to 0.05-0.10 % and a solution anneal near 1150 °C giving grain size ASTM 5 or coarser, which raises creep strength between roughly 600 and 980 °C. NCF 800HT (UNS N08811, W.Nr. 1.4959) adds a controlled aluminium-plus-titanium sum of 0.85-1.20 % and is preferred for sustained service above about 800 °C, such as reformer and pyrolysis tubes.

What is the chemical composition of NCF 800H?

Carbon 0.05-0.10 %, silicon 1.00 % max, manganese 1.50 % max, phosphorus 0.030 % max, sulphur 0.015 % max, nickel 30.00-35.00 %, chromium 19.00-23.00 %, copper 0.75 % max, aluminium 0.15-0.60 %, titanium 0.15-0.60 %, iron balance. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. reports the actual heat analysis on the EN 10204 3.1 certificate supplied with every NCF 800H forging.

What are the mechanical properties of NCF 800H forgings?

In the solution annealed condition NCF 800H meets a minimum 0.2 % proof strength of 175 N/mm² (25 ksi), a minimum tensile strength of 450 N/mm² (65 ksi), a minimum elongation of 30 %, and a hardness of 171 HV or 167 HB maximum. Testing is carried out on a test piece taken from the forging or from a sacrificial prolongation.

What is the maximum service temperature of NCF 800H?

NCF 800H is the grade normally chosen for continuous service between about 600 and 980 °C, where its creep and stress-rupture strength is much higher than plain Alloy 800. ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code allowable stresses for Alloy 800H extend to 816 °C (1500 °F), above which Alloy 800H and 800HT are the standard choices. The permissible design temperature for a specific component must be established from the governing code by the design engineer.

How are NCF 800H forgings heat treated?

NCF 800H forgings are solution annealed at approximately 1120-1180 °C followed by rapid cooling. This is hotter than the anneal used for Alloy 800 and produces the ASTM 5 or coarser grain size the grade requires. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. can also carry out solution treatment plus ageing where the customer specification calls for it, and supplies the furnace charts with the certificate.

What testing and certification is supplied with NCF 800H forgings?

Every NCF 800H forging is ultrasonically tested to EN 10228-3, SEP 1921 or ASTM A388 to the acceptance class stated on the order. Liquid penetrant inspection, intergranular corrosion testing, grain-size measurement, elevated-temperature tensile testing and impact testing are available on request. Certification is EN 10204 3.1 as standard, or EN 10204 3.2 witnessed by TÜV, BV, SGS or Lloyd's Register.

Which standards can NCF 800H forgings be supplied to?

JIS G4901 for bars, JIS G4902 for plates and sheets, JIS G4903 for seamless pipes and JIS G4904 for heat exchanger tubes. The equivalent ASTM and ASME specifications for UNS N08810 are ASTM B564 / ASME SB-564 for forgings, ASTM B408 / ASME SB-408 for bar and rod, ASTM B409 / ASME SB-409 for plate, sheet and strip, ASTM B407 / ASME SB-407 for seamless pipe. The European equivalent is W.Nr. 1.4958, EN designation X5NiCrAlTi31-20.
