  • Composition: Ni about 71%, Mo 15 to 18%, Cr 6 to 8%, Fe 5% max, C 0.04 to 0.08%.
  • Tensile strength: about 800 MPa. Elongation about 39.3% in 25.4 mm. Modulus 219 GPa.
  • Main use: molten fluoride salt containment, where stainless steels and chromium-rich nickel alloys do not last.
  • Limitation: low chromium gives poor resistance to strongly oxidising media. It does not replace Hastelloy C-276 in nitric acid or wet chlorine.
  • Ordering standard for forgings: ASTM B564, adopted by ASME as SB-564.

What is UNS N10003?

UNS N10003 is the Unified Numbering System designation for the nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy sold as Hastelloy N. Oak Ridge National Laboratory developed it in the 1950s as INOR-8. The requirement was a material that could hold molten fluoride salt at high temperature inside the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment.

Most corrosion resistant nickel alloys rely on chromium. Hastelloy C-276 contains about 16% and Inconel 625 about 21%. UNS N10003 contains 6 to 8%. Molten fluoride salt attacks chromium first, so the chromium level was held low, at a level sufficient for oxidation resistance in air. Molybdenum at 15 to 18% provides the solid solution strength and the resistance to reducing acids.

UNS N10003 is a solid solution alloy. Strength comes from molybdenum dissolved in the nickel matrix, not from precipitation hardening. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. forges the alloy hot, solution anneals it and quenches it. No ageing cycle is applied.

Corrosion resistance

UNS N10003 suits a narrow set of environments. The lists below cover both sides so the alloy is not specified into the wrong service.

Suitable environments

  • Molten fluoride salts to about 704 °C, the service the alloy was developed for.
  • Hot hydrofluoric acid vapour and anhydrous HF.
  • Hydrochloric acid and phosphoric acid under reducing conditions.
  • Sulphuric acid at moderate concentration and temperature.
  • Air oxidation to about 815 °C for intermittent exposure.

Unsuitable environments

  • Strongly oxidising media such as nitric acid and ferric or cupric chloride, where 6 to 8% chromium is not sufficient.
  • Wet chlorine and hypochlorite. Specify Hastelloy C-276 instead.
  • Sustained exposure between about 650 °C and 760 °C in some conditions, where carbide precipitation can reduce ductility. Confirm against the service cycle.

UNS N10003 compared with C-276, B-3 and Inconel 625

These four nickel alloys are often considered together at enquiry stage. Chromium content is the main difference and it determines behaviour in oxidising and reducing media.

How UNS N10003 forgings are produced

  1. Melting by EAF, VOD and ESR Raw material is melted in an electric arc furnace, refined by vacuum oxygen decarburisation, then electroslag remelted. ESR gives the low sulphur level and the clean, sound ingot that a nickel alloy forging requires.
  2. Heating and open-die forging Billets are soaked to 1,150 to 1,180 °C and forged with the finishing passes completed above 950 °C. Nickel-molybdenum alloys have a narrow hot working window and work harden quickly, so reheats are scheduled to keep the material in range.
  3. Ring rolling Pierced blanks are rolled to final ring geometry. Ring rolling orients the grain flow circumferentially, which a ring cut from plate does not achieve.
  4. Solution annealing Forgings are solution annealed at 1,177 °C (2,150 °F) and rapidly quenched. This dissolves carbides and restores corrosion resistance. No ageing treatment follows.
  5. Rough machining Pieces are turned or bored to the agreed machining allowance, ready for the customer's finishing operations.
  6. Testing and certification Chemistry, mechanical tests and ultrasonic examination are carried out and reported on the EN 10204 certificate issued with the shipment.

What is UNS N10003?

UNS N10003 is a nickel-molybdenum-chromium solid solution alloy. Nominal composition is 71% nickel, 15 to 18% molybdenum and 6 to 8% chromium. It is sold as Hastelloy N and also called Alloy N. Oak Ridge National Laboratory developed it as INOR-8 for the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. forges UNS N10003 into rings, flanges, discs, shafts and bars to ASTM B564.

Is UNS N10003 the same as Hastelloy N?

Yes. UNS N10003 is the Unified Numbering System designation for the alloy sold under the trade name Hastelloy N. The same alloy is also called Alloy N and was originally designated INOR-8. Purchase orders may use any of these names. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. accepts orders under all of them.

What is the maximum service temperature of UNS N10003?

About 704 °C (1300 °F) in molten fluoride salt service. Useful strength is retained to roughly 815 °C for short-term exposure. The governing limit is set by the design code and the service environment rather than by the alloy alone.

Which standard covers UNS N10003 forgings?

ASTM B564 is the standard specification for nickel alloy forgings and is the usual ordering standard for UNS N10003 rings, flanges and discs. ASTM B573 covers rod and bar. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. supplies UNS N10003 forgings to ASTM B564 with EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 inspection certificates.

What heat treatment is applied to UNS N10003 forgings?

Solution annealing at 1,177 °C (2,150 °F) followed by rapid quenching. UNS N10003 is a solid solution alloy and is not age hardened, so no precipitation ageing step is applied.

What is the difference between UNS N10003 and Hastelloy C-276?

Chromium content. UNS N10003 contains 6 to 8% chromium and suits molten fluoride salt and hot hydrofluoric acid vapour. Hastelloy C-276 (UNS N10276) contains about 16% chromium plus tungsten and handles both oxidising and reducing media including wet chlorine. Use N10003 for molten salt systems and C-276 for general chemical process duty.

Can UNS N10003 be welded?

Yes, by GTAW, GMAW and SMAW with matching filler metal. Weld in the solution annealed condition and keep heat input and interpass temperature low. Solution anneal after welding where the design code requires it. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. supplies forgings rather than welded fabrications and can size pieces to suit a welding procedure.

What sizes of UNS N10003 forgings can be produced?

Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. produces UNS N10003 seamless rolled rings from 100 mm to 2,500 mm outside diameter, forged bars from 20 mm to 800 mm diameter, discs to 2,000 mm diameter and single pieces from 5 kg to 15,000 kg. Larger sizes are reviewed against the drawing.

What is the minimum order quantity for UNS N10003 forgings?

Open-die forging requires no dies, so Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. quotes single prototype pieces as well as production batches. Raw material availability sets the practical floor, and single pieces are normally cut from stock billet.

Can you supply UNS N10003 forgings with third party inspection?

Yes. EN 10204 3.1 mill certificates are standard. EN 10204 3.2 certificates witnessed by an independent inspection body such as SGS, BV, TUV or Lloyd's Register are available on request. State the inspection body on the enquiry so witness points can be scheduled.
