What is the chemical composition of 30CrMoV9?

EN 10250-3 specifies 0.26 to 0.34 % carbon, 2.30 to 2.70 % chromium, 0.15 to 0.25 % molybdenum and 0.10 to 0.20 % vanadium, balance iron. Chromium is about two and a half times the level found in 42CrMo4. That is the main reason the grade hardens through in heavy sections and responds well to nitriding.

Product analysis tolerances apply per the standard. Tighter internal limits can be agreed at order, for example P and S held to max 0.025 % for pressure or low-temperature service.

What mechanical properties does 30CrMoV9 reach?

In the quenched and tempered condition EN 10250-3 requires at least 900 MPa tensile strength and 700 MPa yield strength for sections up to 160 mm. Between 160 mm and 330 mm the minimums drop to 800 MPa and 590 MPa, because the quench cannot cool the core as quickly.

Hardness, modulus and density are working values for the quenched and tempered condition, not standard requirements. Impact energy, elevated-temperature properties and through-thickness testing are agreed per order. Confirm the current edition of EN 10250-3 for contractual acceptance values.

Section thickness governs the properties that can be specified. A 500 mm forged shaft in 30CrMoV9 will not reach the values quoted for a 150 mm bar. State the finished section thickness in the enquiry and we will confirm achievable values before the order is placed.

How is 30CrMoV9 heat treated?

30CrMoV9 is hardened from 840 to 880 °C with an oil quench and tempered at 570 to 680 °C to set the final strength. Soft annealing at 680 to 720 °C brings hardness down to about 248 HB for machining. Normalising is done at 860 to 900 °C.

Heat-treatment ranges for 30CrMoV9 (1.7707)
OperationTemperatureCooling and result
Normalising860–900 °CStill air. Refines grain after forging
Soft annealing680–720 °CSlow furnace cool. Max approx. 248 HB
Hardening (austenitising)840–880 °COil quench. Water only for specific sections after agreement
Tempering570–680 °CAir or oil. Higher temperature lowers strength and raises toughness
Stress relieving550–600 °CSlow cool. Keep at least 30 °C below the tempering temperature
Nitriding500–580 °CGas, plasma or salt bath. Surface up to approx. 800 HV1

Recommended nitriding sequence

  1. Forge and normalise, then rough machine with stock left for distortion.
  2. Quench and temper, with the tempering temperature at least 30 °C above the planned nitriding temperature so the core does not soften later.
  3. Stress relieve after rough machining if the part is long, thin or asymmetric.
  4. Finish machine to final dimensions, leaving grinding stock only.
  5. Nitride at 500 to 580 °C to the specified case depth, then grind the sealing or bearing surfaces.

Case depth for this grade is normally specified between 0.3 mm and 0.6 mm. Deeper cases need longer cycles and should be agreed with the nitriding shop before machining allowances are fixed.

Which 30CrMoV9 forged forms and sizes are available?

30CrMoV9 is open-die forged into five groups of shape: solid bars, hollow bodies, seamless rolled rings, discs and blocks, and shafts. All work is made to drawing, so non-standard sizes and single pieces are routine.

30CrMoV9 forged product forms, size envelope and common applications
FormSize rangeWhere it is used
Round, square, flat and hex bars 80 to 1200 mm dia. or across flats, up to 8000 mm long Machining stock for pins, rams, valve stems, tie rods
Hollow bars, sleeves, bushings, cylinders, casings and shells 150 to 2500 mm OD, bore from 60 mm, wall from 25 mm Hydraulic cylinders, extruder barrels, bearing housings, pump casings
Seamless rolled rings and forged rings 200 to 4000 mm OD, height up to 800 mm Gear rims, bearing races, flanges, slewing ring blanks
Discs, blocks and plates Discs up to 2500 mm dia., blocks up to 800 mm thick Tube sheets, die blocks, valve bodies, press platens
Crankshafts, gear shafts, pinion shafts, spindles, ring gears and gear wheels Up to 8000 mm long, up to 20,000 kg per piece Gearboxes, compressors, marine and power transmission

The size envelope reflects our normal open-die and ring-rolling capacity. Machining allowance, forging ratio and grain-flow requirements are set from the drawing. Rough machined, semi-finished and finish machined deliveries are all available.

Where is 30CrMoV9 used?

30CrMoV9 is chosen for medium and large cross-sections that need a hard, wear-resistant surface over a tough core and that also have to hold their strength at moderately elevated temperature. Common parts include valve bodies and gate valves, superheated steam valves and fittings, cylinders for combustion engines, extruder screws and barrels, gear and pinion shafts, spindles and heavily loaded fasteners.

  • Valves and fittings: gate valve bodies, stems and superheated steam fittings, where creep resistance and tempering stability matter.
  • Power transmission: pinion shafts, gear blanks and spindles nitrided for surface durability after quenching and tempering.
  • Plastics and rubber machinery: extruder screws, barrels and liners relying on the nitrided case for abrasion resistance.
  • Engine and compressor parts: cylinders, crankshafts and connecting components in medium and large cross-section.
  • Oil, gas and general engineering: high-strength studs, tie rods, mandrels and tooling that must resist softening in service.

30CrMoV9 compared with 31CrMoV9, 42CrMo4 and 34CrNiMo6

The grade closest to 30CrMoV9 is 31CrMoV9 (1.8519), which has nearly identical chemistry but sits in the nitriding steel standard EN 10085. 42CrMo4 is the cheaper general-purpose choice with about a fifth of the chromium. 34CrNiMo6 is the nickel-bearing grade used where core toughness in very heavy sections is the priority.

30CrMoV9 is not AISI 4140 or AISI 4340. Some cross-reference tables print 4340 next to 1.7707, but chromium in 30CrMoV9 is around three times higher and there is no deliberate nickel addition. Those tables are a starting point for discussion, not an approved substitution. Where a specification permits an alternative grade, tell us the property required and we will propose one in writing.

What testing and certification comes with the forgings?

Every 30CrMoV9 order ships with an EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificate showing the heat number, ladle analysis, heat-treatment record and mechanical test results. Additional non-destructive testing, third-party witnessing and special reporting are added on request and quoted as separate line items.

Frequently asked questions about 30CrMoV9

Is 30CrMoV9 the same as 1.7707?

Yes. 30CrMoV9 is the EN chemical designation and 1.7707 is the EN material number for the same steel. Drawings may show either, or both together as 30CrMoV9 / 1.7707.

Which standard covers 30CrMoV9 forgings?

EN 10250-3, open steel die forgings for general engineering purposes, part 3: alloy special steels. It sets the composition and the quenched and tempered mechanical properties for section thicknesses up to 330 mm.

Is 30CrMoV9 the same as 31CrMoV9 (1.8519)?

No, though the chemistry is almost identical. 30CrMoV9 sits in EN 10250-3 as an alloy special steel for forgings. 31CrMoV9 sits in EN 10085 as a dedicated nitriding steel. If the drawing says 31CrMoV9, supply 31CrMoV9. The two are not interchangeable without written approval from the customer.

What is the American equivalent of 30CrMoV9?

There is no exact AISI or SAE equivalent. The chromium content is far above AISI 4140 and 4340, so neither is a drop-in substitute. The closest listed cross-reference is the GOST grade 30Kh3MF, and the nearest EN relative is 31CrMoV9 (1.8519).

Can 30CrMoV9 be nitrided, and how hard does the surface get?

Yes. Chromium, molybdenum and vanadium form stable nitrides, so gas, plasma or salt-bath nitriding at roughly 500 to 580 °C produces a surface of up to about 800 HV1 over a quenched and tempered core. Temper above the nitriding temperature and finish machine before nitriding.

Is 30CrMoV9 weldable?

It has a high carbon equivalent and is not recommended for welded structures. If welding cannot be avoided, use low-hydrogen consumables, preheat to about 250 to 350 °C, hold the interpass temperature and apply post-weld heat treatment below the tempering temperature, then qualify the procedure by test.

How machinable is 30CrMoV9?

In the soft annealed condition at around 248 HB it machines much like other medium-carbon alloy steels. Above 300 HB after quenching and tempering, tool life drops. Carbide tooling, rigid setups and roughing before final heat treatment all help. Ask for the annealed condition if heavy stock removal is done in house.

What sizes and weights can you forge in 30CrMoV9?

From about 20 kg to 20,000 kg per piece: bars 80 to 1200 mm diameter, seamless rolled rings 200 to 4000 mm outside diameter, discs and blocks up to about 2500 mm, and shafts up to about 8000 mm long. Send the drawing to confirm a specific size.

What is the minimum order quantity and the lead time?

Minimum order is one piece, including single spares and prototypes. Lead time is normally 15 to 35 days after drawing approval, depending on size, heat treatment and the testing requested.

Do you supply material certificates?

Yes. EN 10204 3.1 is standard on every order and covers heat number, ladle analysis, heat-treatment record and mechanical test results. EN 10204 3.2 with SGS, BV, TUV, Lloyd's Register or ABS witnessing is available on request.

Which countries do you export 30CrMoV9 forgings to?

We ship worldwide from Shanghai and Ningbo, regularly to Germany, Italy, Turkey, India, the United States, Brazil, Korea and Southeast Asia, on FOB, CIF or DDP terms as required.
