11CrMo9-10, material number 1.7383, is a creep-resistant chromium-molybdenum alloy steel of the 2.25Cr-1Mo family. EN 10222-2 covers it as a grade for steel forgings used in pressure equipment at elevated temperature. The steel carries 2.00 to 2.50 % chromium and 0.90 to 1.10 % molybdenum, with carbon held down to 0.08 to 0.15 %. It holds useful strength in continuous service to roughly 500 °C and resists hydrogen attack.

On drawings the grade is usually cross-referenced against its ASTM counterparts A182 Grade F22, A335 Grade P22 and A387 Grade 22. Mechanical properties of 11CrMo9-10

Room-temperature properties depend on the delivery condition and on the nominal thickness of the forging. Three conditions are recognised: +NT, normalised and tempered; +QT, quenched and tempered; and +QL, quenched and tempered with low-temperature impact requirements.

Heat treatment of 11CrMo9-10

11CrMo9-10 gets its properties from a two-stage treatment after forging. The sequence below is typical. Exact temperatures and soak times follow from section thickness and appear on the heat-treatment chart supplied with the order.

  1. Forge. Heat to 1100 to 1200 °C and finish forging above roughly 850 °C, so the steel is not worked below its recrystallisation range.
  2. Normalise or quench. Austenitise at roughly 900 to 960 °C, then air-cool for +NT, or water or oil quench for +QT and +QL.
  3. Temper. Temper at roughly 680 to 750 °C, above the expected post-weld heat treatment temperature, then cool in still air.
  4. Stress relieve. Apply after rough machining where the design or the customer specification calls for it.
  5. Test and certify. Take test coupons from the same heat and heat-treatment charge, then report results on an EN 10204 certificate.

Tempering has to be carried out above the post-weld heat treatment temperature the component will later see. Otherwise PWHT will pull down the strength achieved in the forging.

Welding 11CrMo9-10

11CrMo9-10 welds with the usual arc processes, but as a hardenable Cr-Mo steel it needs thermal control. Preheat runs around 200 to 250 °C and is held as interpass temperature. Consumables should be low-hydrogen and matched to the 2.25Cr-1Mo composition. Post-weld heat treatment at roughly 690 to 730 °C is standard practice on pressure-retaining welds, both to temper the heat-affected zone and to take out residual stress.

Refinery specifications for 2.25Cr-1Mo equipment in hydrogen service usually add step-cooling and temper-embrittlement requirements on top of that. Check the welding procedure against the job specification before work starts.
