What is F11?
F11 is the forging designation for 1.25Cr-0.5Mo steel. The same alloy appears under other names depending on the product form: A335 P11 as seamless pipe, A213 T11 as boiler tube, A387 Grade 11 as plate, and A217 WC6 as a casting. Engineers usually say "F11" when they mean a forged part and "P11" when they mean pipe, but the metallurgy is the same.
Two ASTM specifications cover F11 forgings. A182 is written for piping components such as flanges, forged fittings and valves. A336 is written for pressure and high-temperature parts such as vessel and boiler components. They set different acceptance limits, so the purchase order has to say which one applies.
The three classes share one alloy philosophy and differ in carbon range and tempering. Class 1 is the softest and most ductile. Class 2 is what most projects specify. Class 3 is the strongest.
What do the chromium, molybdenum and silicon do?
Chromium at 1.00 to 1.50% forms an adherent oxide that slows scaling in hot air and steam, and it raises resistance to sulfidic attack in refinery streams. Molybdenum at 0.44 to 0.65% is the creep element. It keeps carbides stable at temperature, so the steel resists slow deformation under load for decades rather than years. Silicon at 0.50 to 1.00% is higher in F11 than in most low-alloy steels and improves oxidation resistance further.
Together these three give F11 its working role: a steel that costs little more than carbon steel but survives hydrogen at pressure and steam at temperature. That is why it appears throughout hydroprocessing units, reformers, boilers and steam headers.
F11 chemical composition
Composition limits below are the heat analysis requirements of ASTM A182 for Grade F11. Class 2 and Class 3 share one chemistry and one UNS number. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. applies these limits to all F11 forging stock and reports the actual heat analysis on every certificate.
| Grade | UNS | C | Mn | P max | S max | Si | Cr | Mo |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| F11 Class 1 | K11597 | 0.05–0.15 | 0.30–0.60 | 0.030 | 0.030 | 0.50–1.00 | 1.00–1.50 | 0.44–0.65 |
| F11 Class 2 | K11572 | 0.10–0.20 | 0.30–0.80 | 0.040 | 0.040 | 0.50–1.00 | 1.00–1.50 | 0.44–0.65 |
| F11 Class 3 | K11572 | 0.10–0.20 | 0.30–0.80 | 0.040 | 0.040 | 0.50–1.00 | 1.00–1.50 | 0.44–0.65 |
Product analysis on the finished forging may deviate from these heat analysis limits by the tolerance stated in the specification. Both figures appear on the certificate when product analysis is ordered.
Restricted residual elements
ASTM does not limit the elements below for F11, but refinery and boiler specifications frequently add them. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. can hold these limits when they are stated at enquiry stage, because they govern which melt the billet is drawn from.
| Element or index | Limit available | Reason for the restriction |
|---|---|---|
| Nickel | 0.35 max | Hardenability control and weld metal matching |
| Copper | 0.35 max | Residual control and hot workability |
| Aluminium | 0.045 max | Grain size control |
| Vanadium | 0.05 max | Avoids unintended creep strength variation |
| J-factor | 100 max | (Si+Mn) × (P+Sn) × 104, temper embrittlement |
| X-bar | 15 max | (10P + 5Sb + 4Sn + As) / 100 in ppm, temper embrittlement |
F11 mechanical and physical properties
A182 sets a minimum tensile strength only. A336 sets a tensile range with a ceiling as well as a floor, and it allows 18% elongation for Class 3 where A182 requires 20%. A forging that passes A182 can therefore fail A336 on an over-strength result, which is the single most common reason an F11 forging is rejected at certificate review.

Charpy impact testing
Neither A182 nor A336 requires impact testing of F11 as a baseline. Where the design code or the purchaser calls for notch toughness, it is ordered as a supplementary requirement. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. tests to the stated temperature and absorbed energy criterion, with 27 J average at 0 °C and 40 J longitudinal on heavier sections among the more common requests.
The F11 temperature windows
Three temperature bands decide whether an F11 forging meets its certificate. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. instruments all three, and the furnace charts are issued with the order on request.
Figure 1. Forging, normalizing and tempering windows applied to F11 by Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. Confirm against the governing purchase specification, which may narrow any of the three bands.
| Class | Condition permitted | Tempering |
|---|---|---|
| Class 1 | Annealed, or normalized and tempered | 620 °C minimum when normalized and tempered |
| Class 2 | Normalized and tempered | 620 °C minimum |
| Class 3 | Normalized and tempered | 620 °C minimum |
A336 also permits liquid quenching and tempering. Confirm the tempering minimum against the edition of the standard named on the order, since ASTM revises these tables.
What F11 forgings does Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal produce?
Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. is an integrated melting works and open-die forge at No.1 Chengxiqiao Road, Zhouzhuang Town, Jiangyin City, Jiangsu Province, China, operating since 1997. The plant melts its own steel, so F11 chemistry is aimed at the forging it will become rather than accepted as delivered, and the certificate traces back to the melt number instead of stopping at a purchased billet.
F11 demand is dominated by one-off and small-batch pressure-retaining parts, which is work that open-die forging suits and closed dies never pay back on.

Product forms produced in F11 are seamless rolled rings, discs, tube sheets, shafts, sleeves and cylinders, rings, valve parts, hollow bars, cylinders, blocks, flange blanks, nozzle necks, girth flanges, channel covers and valve bodies, bonnets, stems, closures and seat rings.
Delivery condition is normalized and tempered as standard, supplied rough machined with an agreed allowance or finish machined to drawing. Heat treatment available in-house covers annealing, normalizing, and hardening and tempering. Heavy sections are rough machined before final heat treatment so the treatment reaches the true section thickness. Anti-rust coating and seaworthy packing are included for export.
How is an F11 forging produced?
The route below is the standard sequence used by Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. for F11. The stages run in this order because each depends on the one before it.
- Melting and analysis F11 is melted in the electric arc furnace and refined in the ladle furnace on site, with the heat analysis taken before the ingot is teemed. Incoming stock is verified by positive material identification, because F11, F12 and F22 look identical in the rack.
- Preheat and soak The billet is through-heated to 1150–1200 °C and held until core and surface equalise. Heavy sections get a proportionally longer soak.
- Upsetting The billet is upset to break down the cast dendritic structure. A forging ratio of at least 3:1 is targeted so the grain is refined through the section rather than only at the surface.
- Drawing, punching, expanding The piece is drawn to a shaft, or punched and expanded over a saddle mandrel for rings and sleeves. Ring blanks then go to the 6 m, 3 m or 1 m radial-axial ring mill.
- Controlled reheats The forging returns to the furnace as often as needed so deformation always finishes above 850 °C. Working a cooling piece below that temperature is what produces the cracks found later at ultrasonic inspection.
- Normalizing and tempering The forging is normalized at 900–950 °C and air cooled, then tempered at 680–730 °C. Tempering is set above the post-weld heat treatment the customer plans, so later fabrication does not soften the part below its acceptance limits.
- Rough machining and ultrasonic testing The forging is rough machined to a testable surface, then inspected volumetrically to ASTM A388 against the acceptance class stated on the order.
- Testing and certification Heat chemistry, tensile and yield strength, elongation, reduction of area and hardness are documented on an EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificate, with impact testing and product analysis added when ordered.

F11 compared with F12, F22, F5, F9 and F91
The question Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. is asked most often is not what F11 is, but whether F11 is enough. Chromium content is the axis. More chromium buys higher temperature and more resistance to sulfur and hydrogen, and costs more.
| Grade | Nominal alloy | Cr % | Mo % | Tensile, min | Where it is chosen |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| F11 | 1¼Cr-½Mo | 1.00–1.50 | 0.44–0.65 | 485 MPa | Moderate temperature hydrogen and steam service |
| F12 | 1Cr-½Mo | 0.80–1.25 | 0.44–0.65 | 485 MPa | Slightly milder duty, commercially close to F11 |
| F22 | 2¼Cr-1Mo | 2.00–2.50 | 0.87–1.13 | 515 MPa | Higher temperature and higher hydrogen partial pressure |
| F5 | 5Cr-½Mo | 4.0–6.0 | 0.44–0.65 | 485 MPa | Sulfidic corrosion in crude and vacuum units |
| F9 | 9Cr-1Mo | 8.0–10.0 | 0.90–1.10 | 585 MPa | High temperature oxidation resistance |
| F91 | 9Cr-1Mo-V | 8.0–9.5 | 0.85–1.05 | 620 MPa | Supercritical and ultra-supercritical power plant |
Read the chromium column against the service. Below roughly 550 °C in clean steam or moderate hydrogen, F11 does the job and F22 is money spent for nothing. Above that, or where the API 941 curve for 1.25Cr-0.5Mo is exceeded, F22 becomes the correct specification and F11 stops being a saving.

| USA, forgings | ASTM A182 F11, ASTM A336 F11 | The subject of this page |
| ASME code | SA-182 F11, SA-336 F11 | Adopted into Section II Part A |
| Europe | 13CrMo4-5, material number 1.7335 | Nearest EN grade. Lower silicon and a narrower chromium band, so not a drop-in replacement |
| Germany, superseded | DIN 13CrMo44 | Older designation still seen on legacy drawings |
| China | 14Cr1Mo, 15CrMoG | Domestic grades of the same family |
| Japan | JIS SFVAF11A, SFVAF11B, STPA23 | Forging and pipe designations |
| Pipe and tube | A335 P11, A213 T11 | Same alloy, different product form |
Where are F11 forgings used?
| Industry | Service | Forged components |
|---|---|---|
| Refining | Hydrotreating, hydrocracking, catalytic reforming | Tube sheets, channel covers, nozzle necks, valve bodies, flange blanks |
| Petrochemical | Hydrogen and hot hydrocarbon streams | Rings, shells, blocks, girth flanges |
| Power generation | Superheater and reheater headers, steam lines | Header forgings, valve bodies, turbine casing parts |
| Boilers and pressure vessels | ASME Section I and Section VIII construction | Nozzle forgings, cover flanges, shell courses |
| Heat exchangers | Shell and tube, fixed, stationary and floating heads | Tube sheets including weld overlaid and clad, front and rear heads |
| Valves and fittings | High temperature isolation and control | Bodies, bonnets, stems, closures, seat rings |
The F11 rejections we are asked to investigate are rarely chemistry failures. They are tempering failures. A forging tempered at the specification minimum passes at our works, then the fabricator runs post-weld heat treatment fifty degrees higher and the hardness drops out of the band.

Frequently asked questions about F11
What is ASTM A182 F11?
ASTM A182 F11 is a forged 1.25% chromium, 0.5% molybdenum ferritic alloy steel used for pipe flanges, forged fittings, valves and parts in high-temperature service. It is supplied in Class 1, Class 2 or Class 3, with UNS number K11597 for Class 1 and K11572 for Classes 2 and 3. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. forges it to customer drawings in Jiangyin, Jiangsu Province, China.
What is the difference between F11 Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3?
Class 1 has a lower carbon range, 0.05 to 0.15%, and is the softest, with a minimum tensile strength of 415 MPa and hardness of 121 to 174 HBW. Classes 2 and 3 share a higher carbon chemistry of 0.10 to 0.20% and differ by tempering. Class 2 gives a minimum tensile strength of 485 MPa and Class 3 gives 515 MPa. Class 2 is the class most projects specify.
What is the difference between ASTM A182 F11 and ASTM A336 F11?
A182 covers forged piping components and sets a minimum tensile strength only. A336 covers forgings for pressure and high-temperature parts and sets a tensile range with a ceiling as well as a floor, for example 485 to 660 MPa for Class 2. A336 Class 3 also allows 18% elongation where A182 requires 20%. The purchase order must state which specification applies.
Is ASME SA-182 F11 the same as ASTM A182 F11?
The technical content is the same. ASME adopts the ASTM specification into Section II Part A of the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and prefixes it with SA. Material ordered as SA-182 F11 is marked accordingly and certified against the ASME edition, which is what a code-stamped vessel or piping system requires.
What is the European equivalent of F11?
The nearest European grade is 13CrMo4-5, material number 1.7335, covered for forgings by EN 10222-2. It is close but not identical, because 13CrMo4-5 carries lower silicon and a narrower chromium band than F11. Treat it as a commercial equivalent for enquiry purposes and obtain written approval from the purchaser before substituting one for the other.
What is the maximum service temperature of F11?
F11 is used continuously up to roughly 550 to 600 °C, and ASME Section II Part D tabulates allowable stresses above that. The real limit for a given part comes from the design code, the stress level and the process environment rather than from the grade alone. In hydrogen service the API 941 curve for 1.25Cr-0.5Mo sets the boundary, not the mechanical properties.
Does F11 require post-weld heat treatment?
Yes for most thicknesses. Chrome-moly steels including F11 are welded with preheat and controlled interpass temperature, and the fabrication code calls for post-weld heat treatment. Because PWHT can soften the parent forging, Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. tempers above the PWHT temperature the customer plans, so the forging still meets its acceptance limits after fabrication. State the planned PWHT at enquiry stage.
At what temperature is F11 forged?
Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. charges F11 billet at 1150 to 1200 °C and finishes all deformation above 850 °C, using controlled reheats rather than pushing the finish temperature down. The forging is then normalized at 900 to 950 °C and tempered at 680 to 730 °C, against a specification minimum of 620 °C.
Can F11 forgings be made to a customer drawing rather than a standard size?
Yes, and that is the normal way the works operates. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. makes F11 rings, discs, tube sheets, shafts, sleeves, valve bodies and blocks to drawing in as-forged, rough machined or finish machined condition, from 10 kg to 30000 kg single-piece weight. Drawings in PDF, DWG or STEP can be sent to sales@steelforgepieces.com.

Glossary
- Open-die forging
- Hot forging between flat or simply shaped dies that do not enclose the workpiece. Used for large shafts, discs, rings and blocks where tooling for closed dies would never pay back.
- Normalizing
- Heating above the transformation range, then cooling in still air. Refines the grain left by forging and gives a uniform structure through the section. For F11, 900 to 950 °C.
- Tempering
- Reheating below the transformation range to trade hardness for toughness. For F11, 680 to 730 °C, with a specification minimum of 620 °C.
- Temper embrittlement
- Loss of toughness in chrome-moly steel held for long periods between roughly 350 and 550 °C, driven by phosphorus, tin, antimony and arsenic segregating to grain boundaries. Controlled by the J-factor and X-bar limits.
- High temperature hydrogen attack
- Methane formation inside the steel when atomic hydrogen reacts with carbides at temperature and pressure, causing fissuring. The safe operating boundary for each grade is given by the Nelson curves in API 941.
- Forging ratio
- The ratio of starting cross-section to finished cross-section. A measure of how thoroughly the cast structure has been broken down.
- EN 10204 3.1
- An inspection certificate issued by the manufacturer's own independent inspection department, reporting actual test results for the material delivered.
