21CrMoNiV4-7, material number 1.6981, is a heat-resistant, weldable chromium-molybdenum-nickel-vanadium alloy engineering steel supplied in the quenched and tempered condition and used mainly in turbine construction. The vanadium addition keeps strength and creep resistance up at elevated service temperature, so the grade is specified for steam turbine rotor shafts, discs, gland seal rings and valve spindles.
Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. is an open-die forging factory in Jiangyin, Jiangsu, China. We forge 21CrMoNiV4-7 to customer drawing as bars, rings, discs, sleeves, shafts and seamless rolled rings, with EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 material certificates. Enquiries: sales@steelforgepieces.com, +86 189 2135 9659.
What 21CrMoNiV4-7 is
21CrMoNiV4-7 is a low-alloy engineering steel carrying about 1 % chromium, 0.7 % molybdenum, a controlled nickel addition and 0.25 to 0.35 % vanadium. The vanadium forms fine carbides during tempering. Those carbides are what keep proof strength up at temperature and give the grade its creep resistance. Carbon stays between 0.17 % and 0.25 %, low enough that the steel remains weldable with correct preheat and post-weld heat treatment.
Alloy content is modest next to a 12 % chromium turbine steel such as X22CrMoV12-1, so the grade hardens through in heavy sections and machines without trouble. Turbine builders specify it for large rotating and pressure-retaining parts where a leaner quenched and tempered steel such as 42CrMo4 would not hold up at service temperature.
We forge the grade from ingot rather than cutting it out of stock bar. Forging reduction ratio, grain flow direction and test-piece location are set to match your drawing and specification.

| Limit | C | Si | Mn | P | S | Cr | Mo | Ni | V |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 0.17 | 0.15 | 0.35 | - | - | 0.90 | 0.65 | 0.20 | 0.25 |

Balance iron. Aluminium content of the cast is reported on the certificate. Where a customer specification is tighter than the table above, for example a lower phosphorus and sulphur ceiling for rotor duty, we order the heat to the tighter limits and report ladle and product analysis separately.
Heat treatment of 21CrMoNiV4-7
| Operation | Temperature | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Forging | Finish above the recommended stop temperature | Followed by controlled cooling. Heavy sections are cooled slowly to avoid flaking and residual stress. |
| Hardening | 900 to 950 °C | Quench in air, oil, polymer or by water dipping, chosen so the core cooling rate is comparable to an oil quench. |
| Tempering | 680 to 720 °C | Two hours minimum. Soak time and the controlled cooling rate are set to reach the required properties and to avoid temper embrittlement. |
| Stress relief | Below the final tempering temperature | Applied after rough machining or welding when dimensional stability matters. |
Soak times depend on ruling section. We record every furnace cycle and issue the time and temperature chart with the forging.
Mechanical properties and how they are agreed
21CrMoNiV4-7 has no single fixed property table. Proof strength, tensile strength, elongation, reduction of area and notched-bar impact energy are agreed part by part, since they depend on ruling section, test-piece position and the service temperature the turbine builder is designing to. Most specifications call up both room-temperature and elevated-temperature values.
Send us the property table from your drawing or specification. We confirm in writing before the order whether those values are achievable in the section you need, then prove them on the finished forging with witnessed tests. Where the specification requires it, sacrificial test prolongations are forged integrally with the part.
| Test | Reference | Reported |
|---|---|---|
| Tensile, ambient | ISO 6892-1 | Rp0.2, Rm, A, Z |
| Tensile, elevated temperature | ISO 6892-2 | Rp0.2 at the specified temperature |
| Impact toughness | ISO 148-1, Charpy V | Three-specimen set, individual and mean values |
| Hardness | Brinell, ISO 6506 | Survey across the machined surface |
| Grain size and microstructure | On request | Photomicrograph issued with the certificate |

Frequently asked questions about 21CrMoNiV4-7
What is 21CrMoNiV4-7 steel?
21CrMoNiV4-7 is a heat-resistant alloy engineering steel used mainly in turbine construction. It carries about 0.17 to 0.25 % carbon, 0.90 to 1.20 % chromium, 0.65 to 0.80 % molybdenum, 0.20 to 0.80 % nickel and 0.25 to 0.35 % vanadium, and it is supplied quenched and tempered. Its material number is 1.6981.
What is the material number for 21CrMoNiV4-7?
The material number for 21CrMoNiV4-7 is 1.6981. The grade is also written as 21 CrMoNiV 4-7 and 21CrMoNiV4.7. Do not confuse it with 1.6946, which belongs to the related turbine steel 30CrMoNiV5-11.
What is 21CrMoNiV4-7 used for?
21CrMoNiV4-7 goes into steam and gas turbine components that must hold their strength at elevated temperature: rotor shafts, turbine and compressor discs and wheels, guide and gland seal rings, labyrinth and diaphragm rings, valve spindles and stems, casings, sleeves and high-temperature bolting.
Is 21CrMoNiV4-7 weldable?
Yes. 21CrMoNiV4-7 is classed as weldable. Since it is a vanadium-bearing alloy steel, welding needs preheat, controlled interpass temperature, matching or specified consumables and post-weld heat treatment below the tempering temperature. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal can supply a qualified welding procedure on request.
What heat treatment does 21CrMoNiV4-7 need?
The usual route is hardening from 900 to 950 °C with a quench in air, oil, polymer or by water dipping, then tempering at 680 to 720 °C for a minimum of two hours. Soak time and the controlled cooling rate after tempering are chosen to reach the required properties in the ruling section.
Which grades are comparable to 21CrMoNiV4-7?
The closest alternatives are 30CrMoNiV5-11 (1.6946) for higher strength, 21CrMoV5-7 (1.7709) and 21CrMoV5-11 (1.8070) as nickel-free creep-resistant steels, X22CrMoV12-1 (1.4923) where higher steam temperature or oxidation resistance is needed, and 20CrMoNiWV8-8 for high-temperature rotor stages.

Is there a minimum order quantity for 21CrMoNiV4-7?
No. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal accepts single-piece orders, including prototypes, one-off spares and replacement turbine parts, as well as series production. Price and lead time are quoted per drawing, since both depend on ingot size, forging route, machining scope and the inspection plan.
How long does a 21CrMoNiV4-7 forging take?
Lead time comes from ingot availability, forging schedule, heat treatment and machining scope rather than from the grade itself, so it is confirmed with the quotation. Send the drawing to sales@steelforgepieces.com and a firm price and delivery date normally follow within one working day.
