Niobium stabilised austenitic stainless, open-die forgings
347S51 Forgings BS 347S51, UNS S34709, AISI 347H, EN 1.4912 / X7CrNiNb18-10. Forged rings, flanges, discs, shafts, tube sheets and bars.
347S51 is the British Standard number for a niobium stabilised 18Cr-10Ni austenitic stainless steel of the 347H, higher carbon type. Published grade data gives 0.04 to 0.10 % C, 17.00 to 19.00 % Cr, 9.00 to 13.00 % Ni and up to 1.20 % Nb, and lists the grade under six British Standards for pressure purposes. One of those is BS 1503, the forging standard.
Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. melts 347S51 in its own electric arc furnace, ladle furnace and VOD unit in Jiangyin, Jiangsu, then forges, ring rolls, solution anneals, machines and tests it on one site. The certificate traces back to a melt number rather than to a purchased billet.
What 347S51 is
347S51 is a chromium nickel austenitic stainless steel stabilised with niobium, designated under the British Standard system and used mainly for pressure equipment that runs hot.
Niobium has a stronger affinity for carbon than chromium does. In an unstabilised 18/8 steel, time spent between roughly 427 and 816 °C precipitates chromium carbide along the grain boundaries and leaves the metal beside them short of chromium. Corrosion then runs along those boundaries. Every weld heat affected zone passes through that band. Niobium takes the carbon out first as niobium carbide, so the chromium stays in solution where it is needed.
The second feature of 347S51 is its carbon band: 0.04 to 0.10 %, a range rather than a ceiling. A specified carbon minimum is what allows creep rupture allowables to be assigned to a steel. That is why the grade appears in BS 3059-2, which covers boiler and superheater tubes with specified elevated temperature properties, and not only in the general corrosion resisting standards.
For a forging buyer this makes 347S51 a hot service grade. It is bought for parts welded into a pressure boundary and then run at 500 °C and above: headers, refinery furnace hardware, exchanger tube sheets, hot nozzle and flange forgings. It is not a chloride grade, and section 10 sets out where it should not be used.
347S51 against 347S31
These two British numbers are not interchangeable, and orders are regularly placed against the wrong one.
| BS number | Corresponds to | UNS | Carbon | Bought for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 347S31 | Type 347, standard carbon | S34700 | Maximum only, no minimum | General corrosion service, welded fabrication |
| 347S51 | Type 347H, higher carbon | S34709 | 0.04 to 0.10 % specified range | Creep service above about 500 °C, code allowables |
Published mill and consumable data lists 347S31 and 347S51 together as the British designations for the niobium stabilised 18/10 family, covering UNS S34700 and S34709, with 347S51 paired specifically to S34709. A BS 1503 cross reference maps 347S51 to SUS F347H, the Japanese stainless forging grade under JIS G3214.
Ordering note. Corrosion behaviour and welding practice are the same for both. The difference is the carbon minimum and the creep allowables that follow from it. If the part goes into a pressure boundary running above about 500 °C, order 347S51 or ASTM A182 F347H and state it on the purchase order. A heat that satisfies 347S31 will not necessarily meet the 0.04 % carbon floor, and that cannot be corrected after melting.

The niobium minimum is the clause to check. The table gives a niobium ceiling of 1.20 % and leaves the floor to the governing product standard, and the standards do not agree. ASTM A240 for 347H (S34709) requires Nb plus Ta at 8 x C minimum to 1.00 % maximum. Several European mill data sheets for the same chemistry give 10 x C minimum. Whichever ratio your specification uses, that is the real stabilisation gate: too little niobium leaves free carbon available to form chromium carbide, and the grade stops doing the job it was chosen for. We check the ratio by optical emission spectrometry on the heat and report it on the certificate.

Mechanical properties, solution annealed
347S51 is supplied solution annealed. It is not hardenable by heat treatment. Strength comes from the austenitic matrix, and in cold worked product from work hardening.

Figures are published data for the grade family, given for engineering guidance. For wall or section thickness above 10 mm the proof strength can fall short of the tube figure by about 10 MPa. The values that bind on an order are those on the EN 10204 certificate issued against the heat.
Austenitic stainless has no ductile to brittle transition, and this composition keeps high toughness down to cryogenic temperature. The same grade family therefore turns up both in 600 °C superheater service and in cryogenic plant. Our laboratory runs Charpy V notch to minus 60 °C in house. Below that, testing goes to an accredited third party laboratory.
Elevated temperature and creep data
This is the data behind the decision to specify 347S51 rather than a plain 304 or 321 forging, and the reason the grade carries a carbon minimum.

The comparison with titanium stabilisation is the one that matters commercially. Published data puts 347H at roughly 10,000 hours to rupture at 650 °C and 100 MPa, against about 6,000 hours for standard 347 and 8,000 to 9,000 hours for 321H under the same conditions, and puts 347H around 20 to 25 % above 321H at 600 °C over 100,000 hours. Every extra MPa of allowable stress comes off the wall thickness, so on a large forged header or tube sheet the grade choice shows up directly in the weight you pay for.

Forging and heat treatment
Two things decide whether a 347S51 forging performs in service: the finish forging temperature, and whether the part was properly solution annealed afterwards.
Hot working
Published type 347 data gives 1,149 to 1,232 °C (2,100 to 2,250 °F) as the working range for forging, upsetting and other hot work, and states that the alloy should not be worked below 927 °C (1,700 °F). The same data states that material must be water quenched or fully annealed after working to regain maximum corrosion resistance. A 347S51 forging delivered as forged and air cooled through the sensitisation band has not had its stabilisation confirmed, which defeats the reason for specifying the grade.
Heat treatment cycles
- Solution anneal1,000 to 1,100 °C with rapid cooling in air or water. Published ranges for the family also run 1,020 to 1,100 °C and, for 347H, 980 to 1,150 °C. Section thickness decides whether forced air is enough or a water quench is needed.
- Stress relief, where specified850 to 950 °C for 10 to 15 minutes, cooling in air. Used after cold bending or heavy machining.
- After hot bendingHot bending is carried out at 1,100 down to 850 °C and should be followed by a full solution anneal.
- No hardening routeThe grade is austenitic and cannot be hardened by quench and temper. A specification calling for a quenched and tempered condition in this grade contains a drafting error.
Fourteen heat treatment furnaces cover this in house, including three high temperature car bottom furnaces for the upper end of the solution range, car bottom chambers to 8,000 x 2,000 x 2,000 mm, and two well type furnaces 15 m deep so long shafts can be quenched vertically without bowing. Every cycle is charted and the chart is issued with the certificate.
Corrosion behaviour, and where not to use it
347S51 is an intergranular corrosion grade first and a general corrosion grade second. Being clear about the second point prevents a failed part.
Intergranular attack
Niobium stabilisation gives good resistance in the heat treated condition and after sensitising exposure, including in the weld heat affected zone, with no post weld heat treatment. Verified to ASTM A262 Practice E where specified.
General corrosion
Broadly the same as unstabilised 304, nitric acid aside. Good in organic acids at moderate temperature, in sulphate, sulphide and sulphite salt solutions, and in caustic environments at moderate temperature.
Nitric acid
Resistant to nitric acid up to about 55 % concentration and 80 °C, and to nitrate salts. This is why the grade is a fixture in nitric acid and fertiliser plant.
Chloride pitting
A known weakness. Published mill data notes sensitivity to pitting and crevice corrosion even in solutions of relatively low chloride content. Do not specify it for seawater or brine duty.
Stress corrosion cracking
Open to chloride stress corrosion cracking above roughly 60 °C under tensile stress, as all austenitic grades are. Shutdown condensate matters too, since it can concentrate chlorides.
Hot gas
Usable in air to 850 °C, steam to 750 °C and ammonia synthesis gas to about 550 °C. In sulphur bearing flue gas the practical limit drops to 600 to 750 °C depending on conditions.
Welding and machining
Welding
Weldability is good and this is the grade's main selling point. Welding is carried out without preheat, and subsequent heat treatment is normally not required, because niobium keeps the stabilisation intact in the deposited metal. Niobium also crosses the arc with far less loss than titanium, which oxidises in the weld pool. That is the practical reason 347 type filler is the standard consumable even when the parent material is 321.
| Process | Consumable | Parameter |
|---|---|---|
| TIG / GTAW, MIG / GMAW | ISO 14343 S 19 9 Nb, AWS A5.9 ER347 or ER347Si | Heat input below 1.5 kJ/mm, interpass below 150 °C, no preheat |
| MMA / SMAW | ISO 3581 E 19 9 Nb R, AWS A5.4 E347-17 | |
| Overlay welding | ISO 14343 S 19 9 Nb wire or strip |
For higher carbon service ER347H is the matching filler. For dissimilar joints or service above 700 °C, ERNiCrMo-3 is often specified instead.
Machining
Austenitic, tough and work hardening. Guidance for the stabilised grades applies: the cold work hardening rate makes it less machinable than a martensitic grade such as 410, but broadly comparable to 304. Use rigid setups, sharp positive rake tooling, constant feed and plenty of coolant, and avoid dwelling in the cut, since the work hardened skin left behind is what destroys the tool on the next pass. Where the part is to be proof machined for ultrasonic inspection we do that in house on vertical lathes to 5,000 mm swing.

347S51 forged ring weight calculator
For a rectangular section ring, W = π/4 x (OD² − ID²) x H x ρ, with ρ = 7.90 g/cm³ for 347S51. Enter dimensions in millimetres.
Finished weight only. Add forging and machining allowance, commonly 15 to 30 % depending on tolerance class and inspection requirements, to reach the rough forging weight we quote against.
Testing, inspection and certificates
Because the steel is melted here, chemistry is verified at the furnace rather than taken from another mill's certificate.

Intergranular corrosion testing and impact below minus 60 °C are scheduled with an outside laboratory, so flag them at enquiry stage rather than after the forging is finished.
Forging capability behind the grade
Most forging shops in China buy billet. This works starts one step earlier, at the furnace, and for a stabilised grade that has a metallurgical consequence rather than only a commercial one.
347S51 turns on two composition clauses: the carbon window of 0.04 to 0.10 %, and the niobium to carbon ratio. A shop buying billet inherits both from a supplier certificate and can only accept or reject them. Melting in house means the chemistry is aimed at the forging it will become, with carbon placed deliberately inside the window rather than wherever the supplying mill happened to land it, and niobium trimmed against the actual carbon result to satisfy whichever stabilisation ratio the specification calls for.

Frequently asked questions
What is 347S51 stainless steel?
347S51 is the British Standard number for a niobium stabilised 18Cr-10Ni austenitic stainless steel. Published grade data gives 0.04 to 0.10 % carbon, 17.00 to 19.00 % chromium, 9.00 to 13.00 % nickel and niobium up to 1.20 %, with silicon 1.00 % max, manganese 2.00 % max, phosphorus 0.040 % max and sulphur 0.030 % max.
Niobium fixes the carbon as niobium carbide instead of chromium carbide, so the steel resists intergranular corrosion after welding and after exposure in the sensitisation range of roughly 427 to 816 °C. The carbon minimum of 0.04 % is what allows creep rupture allowables to be assigned for elevated temperature pressure service.
Is 347S51 the same as 347 or 347H?
347S51 corresponds to the 347H higher carbon variant, UNS S34709. Plain type 347, UNS S34700, carries the British number 347S31. Published mill and consumable data lists both British numbers against the niobium stabilised 18/10 family and pairs 347S51 with S34709.
Corrosion behaviour and welding practice are the same. The difference is the specified carbon minimum and the creep allowables that follow from it.
What is 347S51 equivalent to?
UNS S34709 and AISI 347H in the United States, with ASTM A182 F347H as the usual forging purchase specification. EN 1.4912 and X7CrNiNb18-10 in Europe. SUS347H in Japan, and SUS F347H under JIS G3214 for forgings. 07Cr18Ni11Nb or 1Cr19Ni11Nb under GB in China, 08Kh18N12B under GOST, Z10CNNb18-10 under AFNOR.
EN 1.4550 and X6CrNiNb18-10 are related but correspond to the standard carbon grade 347 and to BS 347S31, not to 347S51.
Which British Standards cover 347S51?
Six. BS 1501-3 for plate, sheet and strip for pressure purposes. BS 1502 for sections and bars. BS 1503 for steel forgings for pressure purposes, which is the one that governs forged rings, flanges, discs and shafts. BS 1506 for bolting bars and billets. BS 3059-2 for boiler and superheater tubes with specified elevated temperature properties. BS 3605-1 for seamless austenitic pipes and tubes.
BS 1503 has been superseded in European practice by the EN 10222 series, so it is worth quoting an EN or ASTM equivalent alongside the legacy British number on a current order.
What are the mechanical properties of 347S51 forgings?
Solution annealed, the 347H family is normally supplied to a minimum tensile strength of 515 MPa (75 ksi), a minimum 0.2 % proof strength of 205 MPa (30 ksi) and elongation of at least 35 to 40 %, with hardness commonly limited to about 187 to 201 HBW and grain size ASTM 5.0 or finer. Published European data for the related 1.4550 gives tensile 510 to 740 MPa, proof strength 205 MPa, elongation 40 % and hardness around 230 HB. Published data for niobium stabilised tube of the same chemistry gives minimum Rp0.2 of 220 MPa, minimum Rp1.0 of 250 MPa, tensile 515 to 690 MPa and elongation at least 40 %.
Guaranteed values are those stated on the EN 10204 certificate issued against your heat.
What is the maximum service temperature of 347S51?
ASME practice puts the 347H type at about 816 °C (1,500 °F), with oxidation resistance to roughly 850 to 900 °C in continuous service. Published gas corrosion limits for the same steel are 850 °C in air, 750 °C in steam and about 550 °C in ammonia synthesis gas, dropping to 600 to 750 °C in sulphur bearing flue gas.
In practice creep governs well before oxidation does. The 100,000 hour rupture strength is about 172 MPa at 550 °C, 115 MPa at 600 °C and 74 MPa at 650 °C.
How are 347S51 forgings heat treated?
Solution annealing is the delivery condition: 1,000 to 1,100 °C with rapid cooling in air or water, with published ranges for the family also given as 1,020 to 1,100 °C and, for 347H, 980 to 1,150 °C. Stress relief where specified is 850 to 950 °C for 10 to 15 minutes followed by air cooling.
On the forging side, published type 347 data gives a hot working range of 1,149 to 1,232 °C (2,100 to 2,250 °F), states that the alloy should not be worked below 927 °C (1,700 °F), and states that material must be water quenched or fully annealed after working to regain maximum corrosion resistance. The grade cannot be hardened by quench and temper.
Can 347S51 be welded without post weld heat treatment?
Yes, and that is the reason the grade exists. Welding is done without preheat and subsequent heat treatment is normally not required, because niobium keeps its stabilising effect in the deposited weld metal. Unlike titanium, niobium suffers little loss across the welding arc.
Filler metals are AWS A5.9 ER347 or ER347Si for TIG and MIG and AWS A5.4 E347-17 for manual metal arc, with heat input below 1.5 kJ/mm and interpass temperature below 150 °C.
Is 347S51 resistant to chloride pitting and stress corrosion cracking?
No, and this is the grade's main limitation. General corrosion resistance is comparable to unstabilised 304: good in organic acids at moderate temperature, in sulphate, sulphide and sulphite solutions, in moderate caustic, and in nitric acid up to about 55 % concentration and 80 °C.
Published mill data notes sensitivity to pitting and crevice corrosion even at relatively low chloride content, and like all austenitic grades it is open to chloride stress corrosion cracking above roughly 60 °C under tensile stress. For chloride service the duplex grades F51, F53 and F55, or 904L, the 6Mo grades and nickel alloys, are the correct route.
Is 347S51 magnetic?
No. The solution annealed niobium stabilised 18/10 austenitic structure is non magnetic, as published data for the 1.4550 family confirms. Heavy cold work can induce a slight magnetic response, but forgings supplied solution annealed behave as non magnetic material.
What size 347S51 forgings can you produce?
Seamless rolled rings from 50 mm up to 6,000 mm outside diameter, on 1 m, 3 m and 6 m radial axial mills with an upset and punch route below the mill range. Single forgings to 30 tonnes on 6,300 t, 4,000 t and 2,000 t hydraulic presses. Shafts to 14,000 mm turned length, discs and tube sheets to 5,000 mm machined diameter, bored cylinders to 1,600 mm diameter by 10,000 mm. Maximum melt shop heat size is 60 tonnes and minimum order is 10 kg.
Who supplies 347S51 forgings?
Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. is an integrated melting works and open-die forging factory at No.1 Chengxiqiao Road, Zhouzhuang Town, Jiangyin City, Jiangsu Province, China, postcode 214423, operating since 1997 with 460 staff. It melts 347S51 through its own electric arc furnace, ladle furnace and vacuum oxygen decarburisation unit, then forges, ring rolls, heat treats, machines and tests on one site, so traceability runs from the melt number to the shipped part rather than stopping at a purchased billet.
The works holds CCS, BV, DNV, LR and NK approvals. Contact +86 189 2135 9659, also on WhatsApp and WeChat, or sales@steelforgepieces.com. Minimum order 10 kg, quotation within two working days, lead time 20 to 60 days.
What testing and certification are supplied?
EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate as standard, EN 10204 3.2 witnessed by BV, DNV, LR, SGS, TUV or your own inspector on request. In house testing covers optical emission spectrometry, infrared carbon and sulphur analysis, tensile on 600 kN and 300 kN machines, Charpy V notch to minus 60 °C, ultrasonic to ASTM A388 and EN 10228-3, magnetic particle and penetrant inspection, and ASTM E112 grain size.
Intergranular corrosion testing to ASTM A262 and impact below minus 60 °C are placed with an accredited third party laboratory and reported with the mill certificate. State them on the enquiry so they can be scheduled before shipment.
