UNS N09901 Forgings: Alloy 901 Rings, Discs, Shafts and Bars
Open-die forged and seamless rolled UNS N09901 to ASTM B637 and AMS 5660, with EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 certification and ultrasonic testing to EN 10228-3.
UNS N09901, sold under the names Alloy 901, Nimonic 901 and Incoloy 901, is an age-hardenable nickel-iron-chromium superalloy. It contains about 42.5% nickel, 13% chromium and 6% molybdenum, with iron making up the balance. Titanium and aluminium form the gamma-prime phase that hardens the alloy during ageing. Molybdenum strengthens the matrix in solid solution. The alloy keeps high yield strength and creep resistance up to about 600 °C (1110 °F), and its high iron content makes it easier to forge than fully nickel-based superalloys.
Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. is an open-die forging factory in Jiangyin, Jiangsu Province, China. It forges UNS N09901 into seamless rolled rings, discs, shafts, flanges, sleeves, bushings, tube sheets and round bars to customer drawings. What is UNS N09901?
UNS N09901 is the Unified Numbering System designation for a precipitation-hardenable nickel-iron-chromium superalloy developed for rotating gas turbine hardware. Two mechanisms give it strength. Titanium and aluminium precipitate a fine, coherent gamma-prime (γ′) phase during ageing. Molybdenum stays in solid solution and stiffens the matrix against dislocation movement at temperature.
The alloy contains roughly 36% iron, which sets it apart from fully nickel-based grades such as Waspaloy and Inconel 718. Iron lowers the raw material cost. It also widens the hot working window, which matters to a forge shop. The alloy has stayed in production for discs, shafts and rings for decades on that basis.
Continuous service temperature is about 600 °C (1110 °F). Above this the gamma-prime coarsens and creep strength drops faster than in higher-nickel grades, so designers move to Waspaloy, Nimonic 105 or Udimet 720.

Forging and heat treatment
Hot working
UNS N09901 is forged from a start temperature of about 1120 °C (2050 °F) and finished above about 950 °C (1740 °F). Reheating between passes is normal on heavy sections. The alloy work-hardens quickly once the temperature drops, so press schedules control reduction and temperature per heat instead of minimising the number of heats.
Solution treatment and ageing
The standard route is solution treatment followed by a two-stage age. Exact cycles are set by the governing specification and by section thickness:
- Solution treatment: about 1080 to 1095 °C (1975 to 2000 °F), held in proportion to section thickness, then oil or water quenched.
- Stabilising or first age: about 790 °C (1450 °F), air cooled.
- Final age: about 720 °C (1325 °F) for 24 hours, air cooled.
Forgings can be supplied as-forged for customers who heat treat in house, or solution treated and aged with the mechanical test results reported on the certificate.

How to request a UNS N09901 quotation
Send a drawing or a size list to sales@steelforgepieces.com. Quotations normally go out within 24 hours. Including the following avoids a round of questions:
- Grade and governing specification, with revision. For example ASTM B637 UNS N09901, or AMS 5660.
- Product form and finished dimensions, or a drawing in PDF, DWG or STEP.
- Quantity and required delivery date.
- Supply condition: as-forged, rough machined, or solution treated and aged.
- Testing and NDT requirements, including the ultrasonic acceptance class.
- Certification type, EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2, and the third-party body if 3.2.
- Destination port and Incoterms.
Frequently asked questions about UNS N09901
What is UNS N09901 equivalent to?
UNS N09901 is equivalent to Alloy 901, Nimonic 901, Incoloy 901, Nickelvac 901 and German material number 2.4662. It is covered by ASTM B637, ASME SB-637, AMS 5660 for bars, forgings and rings, AMS 5661 for wire, and BS HR 55. All of these refer to the same chemistry.
What is the maximum service temperature of Alloy 901?
About 600 °C (1110 °F) in continuous service. Yield strength stays close to the room-temperature value up to roughly 700 °C, but above 600 °C the gamma-prime precipitates coarsen over time and long-term creep strength drops. Waspaloy and Nimonic 105 are the usual alternatives for sustained service above this range.
Does UNS N09901 contain molybdenum?
Yes. Molybdenum is present at 5.0 to 6.5%. It provides solid-solution strengthening of the nickel-iron matrix and contributes much of the creep resistance. A composition table for N09901 that omits molybdenum is incomplete.
Is UNS N09901 the same as Inconel 718?
No. Both are precipitation-hardening nickel-iron-chromium alloys, but they harden by different mechanisms. N09901 forms gamma-prime Ni₃(Al,Ti) from titanium and aluminium. Inconel 718 forms gamma-double-prime Ni₃Nb from niobium. Inconel 718 has higher nickel content and a slightly higher temperature ceiling. N09901 has higher iron content, which lowers cost and improves hot workability.
How is UNS N09901 melted?
Double melting is standard: vacuum induction melting followed by electroslag remelting (VIM + ESR) or vacuum arc remelting (VIM + VAR). Rotating aerospace hardware is often triple melted (VIM + ESR + VAR). Double and triple melting control inclusion content and segregation, which affects the fatigue life of a turbine disc. We source to the melt route your specification calls for.
What heat treatment does Alloy 901 need?
Solution treatment at about 1080 to 1095 °C (1975 to 2000 °F) followed by quenching, then a stabilising treatment near 790 °C (1450 °F), then a final age near 720 °C (1325 °F) held for about 24 hours with air cooling. Exact cycles come from the governing specification and the section thickness of the part.
What is the minimum order quantity for N09901 forgings?
We accept single-piece orders for prototypes, trial parts and spares. Nickel superalloy billet is bought to order rather than held in bulk, so a single piece carries a longer lead time and a higher unit price than a repeat batch. Send the drawing and both are stated on the quotation.
What certification comes with the forgings?
EN 10204 type 3.1 as standard, covering heat number, chemical analysis, heat treatment record, mechanical test results and NDT reports. EN 10204 type 3.2 certification counter-signed by TÜV, BV, DNV, SGS or Lloyd's Register is available on request and should be stated at enquiry stage, since third-party witnessing has to be scheduled into production.
What is the lead time for UNS N09901 forgings?
Typically 30 to 60 days, depending on billet availability, piece size, and the heat treatment and testing scope. Third-party witnessed inspection adds time. A firm date is given on the quotation.
