1 What UNS N09777 is
UNS N09777 belongs to the N09xxx group of the Unified Numbering System, which covers iron-nickel-chromium alloys with roughly 30 to 45 percent nickel. The titanium content of 2.0 to 3.0 percent, held against a carbon ceiling of 0.030 percent, makes this an age-hardening alloy. Strength develops through a precipitation reaction during the ageing cycle.
In the solution treated condition the alloy is soft and ductile, with 35 percent minimum elongation. Most shops rough machine in that condition, age the part, then finish. The molybdenum addition of 2.5 to 5.5 percent contributes solid-solution strength and helps in reducing environments. The 14 to 19 percent chromium provides oxidation resistance.
Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal works the alloy under controlled billet heating, inside a limited forging temperature window, with enough reduction to break down the as-cast structure. Heat treatment follows a written cycle and furnace charts are retained.

3 Mechanical properties at room temperature
Values below are minimums for round bar and wire rod. Ageing raises the minimum yield strength from 207 MPa to 758 MPa and costs 10 points of elongation.
| Condition | Tensile Rm MPa min |
Yield Rp0.2 MPa min |
Elongation A % min |
Reduction of area Z % min |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solution treated, 1040 °C | 517 | 207 | 35.0 | 50.0 |
| Solution treated + aged | 862 | 758 | 25.0 | 35.0 |
Hardness is not specified in the base data. If the drawing calls a hardness range, state it at enquiry. It is achievable through the ageing cycle and will be reported on the certificate.
4 Heat treatment
| Stage | Cycle | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Solution treatment | 1040 °C, soak to section, cool | Soft, ductile, machinable. 517 MPa / 207 MPa minimum. |
| Ageing | 720 °C for 8 hours, furnace cool to 620 °C, hold 8 hours, air cool | Fully hardened. 862 MPa / 758 MPa minimum. |
The two-stage furnace-cooled age runs 16 hours in total. Shortening it changes the properties. Forgings ship in either condition. State the required condition on the order, because it affects the machining route and the price.
5 Product forms forged in UNS N09777
Open-die forging uses no dies. Shape comes from the press, the manipulator and the operator, so single pieces and non-standard sizes are practical in this alloy and there is no tooling charge.
| Group | Items |
|---|---|
| Bar and shaft | Round bars, rods, square bars, rectangular and flat bars, stepped shafts, forged blanks |
| Hollow sections | Hollow bars, sleeves, bushes and bushings, pipe and tube blanks, barrels, casings, cases, shells, cylinders, hubs, housings |
| Rings | Forged rings, seamless rolled rings, flange blanks |
| Flat forgings | Blocks, discs, disks, forged plate |
| Turbine components | Gas turbine wheels, turbine discs, impellers, blisk blanks |
| Valve components | Valve spindles, stems, valve rods, bonnets, valve bodies |
Size range
| Form | Range |
|---|---|
| Round bar and shaft | Diameter 30 to 800 mm, length up to 6000 mm |
| Seamless rolled ring | Outside diameter 200 to 3000 mm, wall and height to drawing |
| Disc and block | Diameter or across flats up to 2000 mm |
| Single-piece weight | 5 kg to 8000 kg |
Sizes outside this range are often still possible. Send the drawing and it will be assessed against current press and furnace capacity.
6 Where the alloy is used
Moderate cost, useful elevated-temperature strength after ageing and a soft delivery condition put UNS N09777 in the same duty band as other titanium-hardened iron-nickel alloys.
- Gas and steam turbine discs, wheels and rotor components
- Compressor and turbine shafts
- Valve spindles, stems and bodies for high-temperature service
- Fasteners, studs and bolting for hot sections
- Oil and gas downhole and wellhead components
- Aero-engine and industrial gas turbine casings and rings
- Power generation and petrochemical pressure parts
Application suitability is decided by the designer. This list shows where alloys of this type are commonly specified. It is not a design recommendation for a particular service condition.
7 How the forgings are made
- Material check. Raw material is received against a mill certificate. The heat number is recorded and traced through to the certificate issued with the finished parts.
- Billet heating. Controlled heating to the forging temperature, with soak time set by section thickness. Overheating damages titanium-bearing alloys, so furnace records are kept for every charge.
- Open-die forging. Upsetting and drawing on a hydraulic press to achieve adequate reduction and break down the cast structure. Rings are punched and expanded on the ring mill.
- Rough machining. Carried out in the soft solution-treated condition where the sequence allows. This reduces tool wear and cycle time.
- Heat treatment. Solution treatment at 1040 °C, then the two-stage age if ordered, run to the written cycle with furnace charts retained.
- Testing. Chemistry and mechanical tests as standard. Ultrasonic, penetrant, hardness and grain size when ordered.
- Certification and dispatch. Mill test certificate issued against the heat number, then marking, preservation and packing for sea or air freight.
8 Testing and certification
Every UNS N09777 forging ships with a mill test certificate showing heat number, chemical analysis and mechanical results. The following are available when specified on the order:
- Ultrasonic testing to an agreed acceptance class
- Dye penetrant testing, and magnetic particle where applicable
- Hardness survey and grain size determination
- Elevated-temperature tensile and stress-rupture testing
- EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 certification
- Third-party inspection by SGS, BV, TUV, Lloyd's or your own inspector
- Positive material identification at dispatch
Testing that is not stated at enquiry stage cannot always be added after forging. List the requirements with the drawing.
