§ 01 · Identification
What is UNS N07080?
UNS N07080 is a wrought, age-hardenable nickel-chromium superalloy. It carries 18 to 21 % chromium, with titanium and aluminium added to precipitate a coherent γ′ phase, Ni₃(Al,Ti). That phase is what holds the load at temperature. The alloy keeps useful tensile and creep-rupture properties to about 815 °C (1,500 °F) and resists oxidation and sulphur-bearing combustion gases. Most of the market knows it as Nimonic 80A or Alloy 80A.
The alloy began as Nimonic 75 with aluminium and more titanium added. Nimonic 75 (UNS N06075) shares the same Ni-Cr base but carries only a small titanium addition, so it stays a solid-solution alloy used for oxidation resistance rather than strength. Adding aluminium alongside a higher titanium level turns the same base into a load-bearing alloy. That is how 80A ended up in first-stage turbine blades, turbine rings and discs, high-temperature bolting, and the exhaust valves of large marine diesel engines.
Chromium is high enough to grow a continuous Cr₂O₃ scale, so the alloy also runs unstressed at higher temperatures purely for oxidation resistance. Oxidation limit and stressed service limit are two different numbers. The 815 °C figure quoted on this page is the working ceiling for loaded parts. Above it the γ′ coarsens and creep strength drops away.
Designations and trade names
The same alloy turns up on drawings and purchase orders under a long list of names. All of these are UNS N07080: Nimonic 80A, Alloy 80A, Nickel Alloy 80A, Nicrofer 7520 Ti, Pyromet 80A, Superimphy 80A, Udimet 80A, and the Chinese grade GH4080A (formerly GH80A). Nimonic is a registered trade name of the Special Metals group. UNS N07080 is the neutral designation, and the one worth using on orders and certificates.

Nickel is determined by difference. Product analysis tolerances apply per ASTM B880. Where a customer specification imposes tighter limits, for example restricted cobalt for nuclear service or a lower sulphur ceiling, state it on the enquiry and we will melt to it rather than to the ASTM band.
§ 03 · Properties
Mechanical and physical properties
The figures below are our standard minimum acceptance values for forged UNS N07080 in the fully heat-treated condition, tested at room temperature. What is actually achievable depends on section size, forging reduction and test location, so on heavy sections agree the test position and the acceptance values before the order goes in.

Yield strength Rp0.2 N/mm² |
Elongation A₅ % |

| Property | Typical value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Density | 8.19 g/cm³ | 0.296 lb/in³, use for forging weight estimates |
| Max. stressed service temperature | ≈ 815 °C | 1,500 °F, γ′ coarsens above this |
| Oxidation resistance | to ≈ 1,000 °C | Protective Cr₂O₃ scale, unstressed |
| Melting range | ≈ 1,360–1,390 °C | Indicative, not a design value |
Corrosion behaviour
The alloy resists sulphur compounds in combustion gases, which is why it dominates exhaust valve applications in engines burning heavy fuel oil. It handles nitric, phosphoric, sulphuric and acetic acids well, has moderate resistance to sea water, and stands up to salt spray and humidity.
For creep and stress-rupture design data, work from EN 10302 or the alloy producer's datasheet rather than from a supplier web page. We supply measured stress-rupture results on the certificate when the order calls for them.
§ 04 · Melting and heat treatment
How we melt, forge and heat treat UNS N07080
Material for forged UNS N07080 is melted by EAF plus VOD, then electroslag remelted. ESR matters on this grade. It refines the ingot structure, tightens sulphur and cuts segregation, and on a γ′ alloy with a narrow hot-working window that shows up directly in forgeability and in ultrasonic cleanliness. Vacuum-refined material can be sourced where a customer specification calls for it.
UNS N07080 is not an easy alloy to forge. The working window is narrower than Inconel 625 or 718, it work-hardens fast, and finish temperature has to be held down to avoid abnormal grain growth in the last passes. Ring rolling and open-die work run to a written forging schedule, with pyrometer records kept against the heat number.
Standard heat treatment
In imperial units: 8 hours at 1,976 °F, air cool, then 16 hours at 1,292 °F, air cool. Both stages run in-house and the furnace charts are recorded against the heat number and issued with the certificate. Where a customer specifies a different ageing schedule, such as a double age or a lower ageing temperature to trade strength for ductility, we run it to their written cycle.

§ 07 · Testing and certification
Inspection, NDT and material certificates
Every UNS N07080 forging is ultrasonically tested to EN 10228-3, SEP 1921 or ASTM A388 at the acceptance class stated on the order, and ships with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate as standard or EN 10204 3.2 with a third-party witness.
What we test
- Chemical analysis. Spectrometer analysis on the heat, plus positive material identification on the finished piece where the order requires it.
- Ultrasonic testing. EN 10228-3, SEP 1921 or ASTM A388, class agreed on the order.
- Mechanical testing. Tensile (Rm, Rp0.2, A₅, Z) and hardness as standard. Impact, elevated-temperature tensile and stress-rupture on request.
- Surface NDT. Dye penetrant to ASTM E165 where specified. Magnetic particle inspection does not apply here, since UNS N07080 is non-magnetic in the solution-treated and aged condition.
- Dimensional inspection. Against the customer drawing, with a report issued alongside the certificate.
Certificates
EN 10204 3.1 is issued by our own quality department against the heat number. EN 10204 3.2 is issued with an independent inspection body witnessing the tests, whether that is TÜV, SGS, BV, Lloyd's Register or the customer's own inspector. Name the inspection body on the purchase order so the witness points can be scheduled before the forgings enter heat treatment.
Traceability runs from ingot heat number through forging, heat treatment and machining on every order. The heat number is hard-stamped or vibro-etched on each piece unless the drawing says otherwise.

§ 09 · Alloy selection
UNS N07080 vs Inconel 718, Waspaloy and Nimonic 90
Use UNS N07080 for hot, loaded parts that will not be welded: exhaust valves, turbine rings and discs, high-temperature bolting. Use Inconel 718 where the part has to be welded or fabricated and service stays below roughly 650 to 700 °C. Waspaloy and Nimonic 90 take over when 80A runs out of strength.
| Alloy | UNS | Strengthening | Stressed service, approx. | Weldability | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nimonic 80A | N07080 | γ′ (Ti + Al) | ≈ 815 °C | Poor, strain-age cracking | Exhaust valves, turbine rings, bolting |
| Nimonic 75 | N06075 | Solid solution | ≈ 550 °C | Good | Furnace parts, unstressed hot components |
| Inconel 718 | N07718 | γ″ (Nb) + γ′ | ≈ 650–700 °C | Good, the reason it dominates fabrication | Welded assemblies, aero and oilfield parts |
| Nimonic 90 | N07090 | γ′ with Co addition | ≈ 870 °C | Poor | Hotter turbine blades and rings |
| Waspaloy | N07001 | γ′ with Co + Mo | ≈ 760 °C | Poor | Higher-strength discs, shafts, fasteners |
| Inconel X-750 | N07750 | γ′ (Nb + Ti + Al) | ≈ 700 °C | Fair | Springs, bolting, gas turbine hardware |
The temperature figures are indicative ceilings for grade selection only. They are not design allowables. Real limits depend on stress, required life, section size and environment, and the design authority's data always governs.

§ 11 · Frequently asked questions
UNS N07080, questions buyers ask
Is UNS N07080 the same as Nimonic 80A?
Yes. UNS N07080, Nimonic 80A, Alloy 80A, Werkstoff 2.4952 and 2.4631, BS 3076 NA20, BS HR1 / HR201 / HR401 / HR601, MSRR 7011, AFNOR NC20TA and Chinese GH4080A all describe the same nickel-chromium alloy. Nimonic is a trade name of the Special Metals group. UNS N07080 is the neutral designation used on purchase orders and mill certificates.
What is the maximum service temperature of UNS N07080?
UNS N07080 holds tensile and creep-rupture strength for stressed service to about 815 °C (1,500 °F). Its chromium-oxide scale gives oxidation resistance well above that, but past roughly 815 °C the γ′ phase coarsens and load-bearing capability drops off.
What is the chemical composition of UNS N07080?
Nickel balance, chromium 18.0–21.0 %, titanium 1.8–2.7 %, aluminium 1.0–1.8 %, iron 3.0 % max, cobalt 2.0 % max, manganese 1.0 % max, silicon 1.0 % max, carbon 0.10 % max, copper 0.2 % max, zirconium 0.15 % max, boron 0.008 % max, phosphorus 0.02 % max and sulphur 0.015 % max, by weight.
What standard covers UNS N07080 forgings?
ASTM B637 is the usual product specification for precipitation-hardenable nickel alloy bar, rod, forgings and forging stock for high-temperature service, and it covers UNS N07080. British equivalents are BS 3076 NA20 and the BS HR series. The German designations are Werkstoff 2.4952 and 2.4631 under DIN 17742 and DIN 17754.
What heat treatment is applied to UNS N07080 forgings?
Solution treat 8 hours at 1080 °C (1,976 °F) and air cool, then age 16 hours at 700 °C (1,292 °F) and air cool. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. runs both stages in-house and issues the furnace charts against the heat number with the certificate.
What is the density of UNS N07080?
The density of UNS N07080 (Nimonic 80A) is about 8.19 g/cm³, or 0.296 lb/in³. Use this figure to estimate forging weight from a drawing envelope when you ask for a quotation.
What is the difference between Nimonic 80A and Inconel 718?
Nimonic 80A (UNS N07080) is strengthened by γ′ Ni₃(Al,Ti) and holds strength to about 815 °C, but it is prone to strain-age cracking and is not an easy alloy to weld. Inconel 718 (UNS N07718) is strengthened by the slower-forming γ″ phase, which makes it far more weldable, but its stressed service ceiling is lower, around 650 to 700 °C. Use 80A for hot static and rotating parts such as exhaust valves and turbine rings. Use 718 for fabricated or welded assemblies at moderate temperature.
Can UNS N07080 be welded?
UNS N07080 is a γ′-hardened alloy and is prone to strain-age cracking, so it is treated as difficult to weld. Where welding cannot be avoided, do it in the solution-treated condition and follow with a full re-solution and ageing cycle. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. does not weld-repair UNS N07080 forgings without the customer's written approval.
Which non-destructive tests are performed on UNS N07080 forgings?
Ultrasonic testing to EN 10228-3, SEP 1921 or ASTM A388, at the acceptance class stated on the order. Chemistry is checked by spectrometer and by PMI where required. Mechanical testing covers tensile and hardness as standard, with impact and stress-rupture on request. Certification is EN 10204 3.1, or EN 10204 3.2 with a third-party witness such as TÜV, SGS, BV or Lloyd's.
