What is UNS N06617?
UNS N06617 takes its strength from cobalt and molybdenum held in solid solution rather than from a precipitation hardening treatment. Chromium at 20 to 24 percent and aluminium at 0.8 to 1.5 percent build an adherent chromia and alumina scale that resists cyclic oxidation, carburisation and nitridation. The high nickel content keeps the alloy stable in reducing and oxidising atmospheres alike. With no strengthening precipitate to over-age, the alloy stays stable through long exposure at 900 to 1100 °C. Gas turbine combustors, furnace internals and nitric acid catalyst grid supports are the usual applications.
For forged parts this means one delivery condition, solution annealed. Room temperature strength is modest next to age hardened grades such as Inconel 718. UNS N06617 earns its place above 800 °C. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal forges the alloy on hydraulic open-die presses and radial-axial ring rolling mills, which suits the low volumes and large simple shapes common in high temperature pressure parts.
UNS N06617 chemical composition
The limiting composition below is the one given in ASTM B564 and ASTM B168 for UNS N06617. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal melts to this range and reports the ladle and product analysis on the mill certificate for every heat.
| Element | Minimum | Maximum | Role in the alloy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nickel (Ni) | 44.5 | Balance | Austenitic matrix, stability in reducing and oxidising media |
| Chromium (Cr) | 20.0 | 24.0 | Forms the protective chromia scale |
| Cobalt (Co) | 10.0 | 15.0 | Solid solution strengthening at temperature |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 8.0 | 10.0 | Solid solution strengthening, resistance to reducing acids |
| Aluminium (Al) | 0.80 | 1.50 | Alumina sub-scale, oxidation resistance above 980 °C |
| Carbon (C) | 0.05 | 0.15 | Carbide strengthening, creep rupture life |
| Iron (Fe) | - | 3.00 | Residual |
| Manganese (Mn) | - | 1.00 | Deoxidiser |
| Silicon (Si) | - | 1.00 | Deoxidiser |
| Titanium (Ti) | - | 0.60 | Residual, carbide former |
| Copper (Cu) | - | 0.50 | Residual |
| Sulfur (S) | - | 0.015 | Held low to protect hot workability |
| Phosphorus (P) | - | 0.015 | Controlled residual |
| Boron (B) | - | 0.006 | Grain boundary strengthening |
Nickel is determined arithmetically by difference. Where a customer specification is tighter than ASTM B564, for example a restricted cobalt band or a lower sulfur ceiling, we melt to the customer specification and state it on the certificate.
UNS N06617 mechanical properties
Table 2 gives the specified minimums for UNS N06617 forgings in the annealed condition under ASTM B564. Values from an actual heat run above these minimums. The certified figures for your order come from the tensile test on the prolongation of your own forging.
| Property | Metric | Imperial |
|---|---|---|
| Tensile strength, minimum | 655 MPa | 95 ksi |
| Yield strength (0.2 % offset), minimum | 241 MPa | 35 ksi |
| Elongation in 4D, minimum | 35 % | 35 % |
| Hardness, typical | 170 HB | 170 HB |
UNS N06617 is bought for elevated temperature service, so the governing numbers are usually the allowable stresses and creep rupture data in ASME BPVC Section II Part D rather than the room temperature minimums above. State the design temperature and code with your enquiry and we will set the delivery condition and grain size requirement to match.

How we forge UNS N06617
UNS N06617 has a narrower forging window than steel, needs higher press loads and work hardens quickly. The route below is the one Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal runs for nickel based superalloy forgings.
- Melting and remelting EAF with AOD or VOD refining, then electroslag remelting for a clean ingot with low segregation. VIM plus ESR or VIM plus VAR where an aerospace or nuclear specification calls for it.
- Ingot conditioning and heating Surface conditioning, then soaking in a calibrated furnace with recorded charts. Soak time and start temperature are fixed by written procedure.
- Open-die forging Upsetting and drawing on hydraulic presses to break down the cast structure and reach the specified reduction ratio. Finish temperature is controlled to hold grain size.
- Ring rolling Pierced and expanded on a radial-axial ring rolling mill. The result is a seamless ring with continuous circumferential grain flow, stronger than a ring cut from plate or welded from bar.
- Solution annealing 1177 °C (2150 °F) minimum per ASTM B564, water quench or other rapid cooling, furnace charts retained. UNS N06617 is strengthened in solid solution, so no ageing treatment is applied unless the specification asks for one.
- Machining Rough or finish machining to drawing. Test prolongations stay on the part until mechanical testing is complete.
- Testing and release Chemical analysis, tensile and hardness testing, grain size, ultrasonic and penetrant inspection, dimensional report, then the EN 10204 certificate and release for packing.

Frequently asked questions about UNS N06617
What is UNS N06617?
UNS N06617 is a nickel-chromium-cobalt-molybdenum superalloy strengthened in solid solution. It holds strength and resists oxidation to about 1100 °C (2010 °F). Nominal content is 20 to 24 percent chromium, 10 to 15 percent cobalt, 8 to 10 percent molybdenum and 0.8 to 1.5 percent aluminium, with nickel as the balance at 44.5 percent minimum. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. forges UNS N06617 into rings, flanges, shafts, discs and bars to ASTM B564.
Is UNS N06617 the same as Inconel 617?
Yes. UNS N06617 is the UNS number for the alloy sold under the trade names Inconel 617, Alloy 617, Nicrofer 5520 Co and VDM Alloy 617. In Europe it is W.Nr. 2.4663 or 2.4663a and NiCr22Co12Mo9. All describe the same nickel-chromium-cobalt-molybdenum chemistry, so a UNS N06617 forging and an Inconel 617 forging are the same material.
Which standards cover UNS N06617 forgings?
Forgings are supplied to ASTM B564 and ASME SB-564. Other product forms fall under ASTM B166 for bar, rod and wire, ASTM B167 for seamless pipe and tube, ASTM B168 for plate, sheet and strip, ASTM B546 and B619 for welded tube and pipe, AMS 5887 for bar, forgings and rings, and AMS 5888 and 5889 for sheet and plate. European coverage is DIN 17742, 17750 and 17752, and VdTÜV 485.
What is the maximum service temperature of UNS N06617?
About 1100 °C (2010 °F) for continuous service in oxidising atmospheres, with useful creep rupture strength above 980 °C (1800 °F). The melting range is 1332 to 1380 °C (2430 to 2515 °F). The working limit depends on stress, atmosphere and required life, so the design code sets the final figure.
What is the chemical composition of UNS N06617?
In weight percent: nickel 44.5 minimum as balance, chromium 20.0 to 24.0, cobalt 10.0 to 15.0, molybdenum 8.0 to 10.0, aluminium 0.8 to 1.5, carbon 0.05 to 0.15, iron 3.0 maximum, manganese 1.0 maximum, silicon 1.0 maximum, titanium 0.6 maximum, copper 0.5 maximum, sulfur 0.015 maximum and boron 0.006 maximum. Nickel is determined arithmetically by difference.
What heat treatment do UNS N06617 forgings receive?
Solution annealing only. ASTM B564 calls for 1177 °C (2150 °F) minimum followed by a water quench or other rapid cooling. UNS N06617 is strengthened in solid solution rather than by precipitation, so ageing is not part of the standard delivery condition and is applied only when a customer specification asks for it.
What forged shapes can you supply in UNS N06617?
Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. supplies seamless rolled rings, forged flanges, round bars, shafts, stepped shafts, discs, blanks, sleeves, bushings, hollow bars, tube sheets, blocks, nozzles, valve bodies and valve seat rings. All are forged open die to customer drawing, in as-forged, rough machined or finish machined condition.
What certificates come with UNS N06617 forgings?
A mill test certificate to EN 10204 3.1 as standard, or EN 10204 3.2 counter-signed by a third party such as TÜV, SGS, BV, DNV or Lloyd's Register. The certificate carries the heat number, full chemical analysis, mechanical results, heat treatment record and NDT report. Parts are hard stamped so they stay traceable to the melt.
What is the difference between UNS N06617 and Inconel 625?
UNS N06617 is a Ni-Cr-Co-Mo alloy for structural service at 900 to 1100 °C, where cobalt and molybdenum give creep strength and chromium with aluminium forms the protective oxide. Inconel 625 (UNS N06625) is a Ni-Cr-Mo-Nb alloy for aqueous and seawater corrosion, normally used below about 650 °C on load bearing parts. Use 617 for furnace and gas turbine hot sections and 625 for wet corrosive and marine duty.
Is UNS N06617 difficult to forge and machine?
Both are demanding. Forging needs high press loads, a narrow temperature window and controlled finish temperature to hold grain size. Machining needs rigid setups, sharp positive rake tooling, low surface speed, heavy feed and plenty of coolant, because the alloy work hardens fast. Where the geometry allows we quote hollow forged or near net shapes to cut machining time on an expensive material.
What is the minimum order quantity and lead time for UNS N06617 forgings?
One piece. Open die forging carries no die cost, so single prototypes and spares are economical. Lead time normally runs 8 to 16 weeks depending on raw material availability, part size and testing scope. Send your required date and we will confirm it against current furnace and press loading.
How do I request a quotation for UNS N06617 forgings?
Send a drawing or the finished dimensions, the quantity, the applicable specification such as ASTM B564, the delivery condition and the certification level to sales@steelforgepieces.com, or call +86 189 2135 9659. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. quotes UNS N06617 open die forgings from a drawing, a sketch or a simple dimensional description, normally within one to two working days.
