NC22DNb Forgings Open-die forged rings, shafts, flanges, discs and bars in Alloy 625, UNS N06625 / W.Nr. 2.4856
NC22DNb is the AFNOR designation for a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy with niobium added. The same material is called Alloy 625, UNS N06625 or Werkstoff 2.4856 elsewhere. Niobium gives it high strength in the solid-solution condition, so no strengthening heat treatment is needed. It resists a wide range of severely corrosive environments and is especially resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. forges NC22DNb to customer drawings at its open-die plant in Jiangyin, Jiangsu, China, and certifies to EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2.

Metallurgy
What NC22DNb is used for
Molybdenum and niobium strengthen NC22DNb in solid solution rather than by ageing. A forging therefore reaches full strength straight out of anneal, stays dimensionally stable through machining and welding, and avoids the distortion problems that come with precipitation-hardened nickel alloys.
Corrosion performance comes from 20 to 23 % chromium together with 8 to 10 % molybdenum. Chromium handles oxidising media. Molybdenum handles reducing media and chloride pitting. In practice the grade is specified after a duplex or super-austenitic stainless steel has failed on chloride stress-corrosion cracking, or where one part has to survive seawater and elevated temperature at the same time.
Service temperature runs from cryogenic to about 982 °C (1800 °F). In the annealed condition the grade is TÜV-approved for pressure vessels between −196 °C and 450 °C. Long exposure above roughly 600 °C can precipitate carbides and intermetallics, so sustained high-temperature duty is normally ordered in the solution-annealed Grade 2 condition.

Process route
Melting, forging and heat treatment
NC22DNb billet is melted by EAF plus VOD and then remelted by ESR. The remelt keeps sulphur and non-metallic inclusions low enough to pass ultrasonic acceptance on heavy sections, and produces a solidification structure that takes open-die reduction without centreline defects.
Heat treatment options
- Grade 1, annealed at roughly 930 to 1040 °C, rapid cool. The standard condition for wet corrosion and pressure vessel service.
- Grade 2, solution annealed at roughly 1090 to 1200 °C. Coarser grain, better creep and high-temperature strength.
- Solution treatment followed by ageing, carried out in sequence where a customer specification calls for it.
- Stress relief up to approximately 870 °C, with the cycle set by section thickness.
Welding
NC22DNb welds readily by GTAW, GMAW and SMAW, in most cases without post-weld heat treatment. Matching filler is ERNiCrMo-3 wire or ENiCrMo-3 electrode to AWS A5.14 and A5.11. The same consumables are used for dissimilar joints and for corrosion-resistant overlay on carbon and low-alloy steel.

Questions
Frequently asked questions about NC22DNb
What is NC22DNb?
NC22DNb is the AFNOR designation for a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy with niobium added. The same material is called Alloy 625, UNS N06625 and Werkstoff 2.4856 elsewhere. Niobium gives it high strength in the solid-solution condition, so no strengthening heat treatment is needed. It resists a wide range of severely corrosive environments and is especially resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion.
Is NC22DNb the same as Inconel 625?
Yes. NC22DNb, Alloy 625, UNS N06625, W.Nr. 2.4856, EN NiCr22Mo9Nb, BS NA21 and JIS NCF 625 all describe the same nickel-chromium-molybdenum-niobium alloy. Inconel is a registered trademark of Special Metals Corporation, so material produced by other mills is correctly called Alloy 625, or by its national designation such as NC22DNb.
What is the chemical composition of NC22DNb?
Nickel 58.0 % minimum, chromium 20.0 to 23.0 %, molybdenum 8.0 to 10.0 %, niobium plus tantalum 3.15 to 4.15 %, iron 5.0 % max, manganese 0.5 % max, carbon 0.10 % max, silicon 0.5 % max, aluminium 0.4 % max, titanium 0.4 % max, cobalt 1.0 % max, phosphorus 0.015 % max and sulphur 0.015 % max.
What are the mechanical properties of NC22DNb forgings?
In the annealed condition the European minimum values are tensile strength 760 N/mm², 0.2 % proof strength 345 N/mm², elongation A5 of 30 % and Brinell hardness 220 HB maximum. To ASTM B564 and ASME SB-564 Grade 1 the minimums are 827 MPa tensile, 414 MPa yield and 30 % elongation. Grade 2 solution-annealed material is 690 MPa tensile, 276 MPa yield and 30 % elongation.
Which standards cover NC22DNb forgings?
Forgings are normally ordered to ASTM B564 or ASME SB-564. Bar and rod go to ASTM B446. European deliveries follow VdTÜV Werkstoffblatt 499 and DIN 17752 or 17754 for W.Nr. 2.4856. Aerospace uses AMS 5666. Sour service is covered by NACE MR0175 and ISO 15156-3. Material certificates are issued to EN 10204 3.1, or EN 10204 3.2 with third-party witness.
What heat treatment is applied to NC22DNb forgings?
Grade 1 annealed material is heat treated at approximately 930 to 1040 °C and rapidly cooled. That is the usual condition for wet corrosion service. Grade 2 solution-annealed material is treated at approximately 1090 to 1200 °C for high-temperature and creep service. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal can also carry out solution treatment and ageing in sequence where a customer specification requires it.
Can NC22DNb be used in sour service to NACE MR0175 and ISO 15156?
Yes. UNS N06625 is listed in NACE MR0175 and ISO 15156-3 as a corrosion-resistant alloy acceptable for sour oil and gas service, subject to the hardness and environmental limits stated in that standard. State the requirement on the order so that hardness testing and certification are included in the material certificate.
What is the maximum service temperature of NC22DNb?
NC22DNb holds useful strength and oxidation resistance from cryogenic temperatures up to about 982 °C (1800 °F). In the annealed condition it is TÜV-approved for pressure vessel service between −196 °C and 450 °C. Long exposure above roughly 600 °C can cause carbide and intermetallic precipitation, so the solution-annealed Grade 2 condition is preferred for sustained high-temperature duty.
Can NC22DNb forgings be welded?
Yes. NC22DNb is solid-solution strengthened and welds readily by GTAW, GMAW and SMAW, in most cases without post-weld heat treatment. Matching filler is ERNiCrMo-3 wire or ENiCrMo-3 electrode to AWS A5.14 and A5.11. The same consumables are used for dissimilar joints and for overlay on carbon and low-alloy steel.
Which forged shapes can be produced in NC22DNb?
Seamless rolled rings, forged flanges, shafts and spindles, round and step bars, discs and disks, tube sheets, sleeves and bushings, forged pipes and tubes, valve bodies, valve stems and seat rings, nozzles, blocks and near-net custom shapes to drawing.
