Hastelloy® B-4 / Alloy B-4 Forgings UNS N10629 · W.-Nr. 2.4600 · NiMo29Cr · Hastelloy® B-4 and Alloy B-4 are two names for one grade · also sold as Nicrofer® 6928 hMo
Hastelloy® B-4 and Alloy B-4 are the same material: a nickel-molybdenum alloy with 26 to 30 % molybdenum and 65 to 72 % nickel, covered by UNS N10629 and W.-Nr. 2.4600. It resists hydrochloric acid and other reducing acids over the full range of concentration and temperature. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. is an open-die forging factory in Jiangyin, Jiangsu Province, China. We forge this grade into rings, flanges, bars, discs, shafts, sleeves, bushings and tube sheets to ASTM B564 and ASTM B462, supplied with EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 certification. Order it as Hastelloy B-4 or as Alloy B-4; the enquiry, the chemistry and the certificate are identical.
Hastelloy B-4 / Alloy B-4 in brief
Hastelloy® B-4, sold generically as Alloy B-4 (UNS N10629, W.-Nr. 2.4600), is a wrought nickel-molybdenum corrosion-resistant alloy in the Hastelloy® B family. The high molybdenum content gives it resistance to hydrochloric acid at all concentrations up to the boiling point, and to sulphuric, phosphoric, acetic and formic acids. It is not suitable for oxidising media such as nitric acid, or for streams carrying ferric or cupric ions. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. forges the grade to order from ESR-refined ingot and quotes against either name.

Hastelloy B-4 and Alloy B-4: one grade, two names
Buyers reach this grade from two directions. Some specify Hastelloy B-4, because the Hastelloy® B family is how the nickel-molybdenum alloys became known in the chemical industry. Others specify Alloy B-4, the generic designation used by mills that do not hold the Haynes trade-name licence. Both point to exactly the same chemistry, the same UNS number and the same ASTM specifications.

Because the two names describe one material, this page treats them as interchangeable throughout. Where the text says Hastelloy B-4, Alloy B-4 reads the same, and the reverse. Send your enquiry under whichever designation appears on your drawing or piping class; Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. quotes from either and states UNS N10629 on the mill test certificate.
Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. is an independent open-die forging factory. It is not affiliated with, licensed by or endorsed by Haynes International, Inc. Material is manufactured and certified as Alloy B-4 / UNS N10629 to ASTM B564 or ASTM B462. The name Hastelloy® B-4 appears here only so that buyers who specify the grade under that trade name can identify the correct chemistry.
What is Hastelloy B-4 (Alloy B-4)?
Hastelloy B-4 is a solid-solution-strengthened nickel-molybdenum alloy, developed as an improvement on Alloy B-2. Tighter control of iron, chromium and carbon cuts down the grain-boundary precipitation that made earlier Ni-Mo alloys prone to cracking during hot working and to stress-corrosion cracking in service. In practice this means Alloy B-4 forges and welds more easily than Alloy B-2, while keeping much the same resistance to hydrochloric acid.
The alloy carries almost no chromium, only 0.5 to 1.5 %, so it has no passive oxide film to protect it under oxidising conditions. That is what decides where the grade can be used. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. supplies Hastelloy B-4 / Alloy B-4 forgings for reducing-acid service, and recommends Alloy C-276 or Alloy 59 when the process stream contains oxidisers.
Key characteristics
- Hydrochloric acid resistance at every concentration, up to boiling temperature.
- Better thermal stability than Hastelloy B-2, with less β-phase (Ni4Mo) and Ni3Mo precipitation between 650 and 800 °C.
- Weldable in the solution-annealed condition using matching filler.
- Density 9.2 g/cm³, about 17 % heavier than carbon steel, which affects forging input weight and freight cost.
- Not for oxidising service. Nitric acid, ferric chloride, cupric chloride and wet chlorine attack it quickly.

Alloy B-4 corrosion performance
Hastelloy B-4 resists hydrochloric acid at every concentration from dilute to concentrated, and at temperatures up to boiling. Few other commercial alloys cover that whole range. It also handles sulphuric acid across a wide band, together with phosphoric, acetic, formic and hydrobromic acids, and dry hydrogen chloride gas at moderate temperature.
Suitable media
Hydrochloric acid at all concentrations, sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, acetic and formic acid, hydrobromic acid, dry hydrogen chloride, aluminium chloride catalyst systems, phenol and styrene process streams.
Unsuitable media
Nitric acid and other oxidising acids, ferric chloride (FeCl3), cupric chloride (CuCl2), wet chlorine, hypochlorite, aerated oxidising salt solutions. Even trace ferric or cupric ions in an HCl stream will raise the corrosion rate sharply.
“The mistake we see most often on Hastelloy B-4 enquiries is an HCl service that also carries ferric ions from upstream corrosion. Alloy B-4 will not survive that. We ask for the full stream analysis before we quote, and we say so when Alloy C-276 or Alloy 59 is the better choice.”

How Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal forges Hastelloy B-4
- Melting. Ingot is produced by EAF and VOD (vacuum oxygen decarburisation), then refined by ESR (electroslag remelting). ESR matters for this grade because it lowers sulphur and reduces segregation, both of which affect hot workability at 26 to 30 % Mo.
- Heating. Ingot is soaked in a controlled-atmosphere furnace. Nickel-molybdenum alloys have a narrow hot-working window, so we track stock temperature rather than furnace temperature.
- Open-die forging. Upsetting and drawing on hydraulic presses to break down the cast structure and reach the forging reduction ratio the specification calls for, usually 3:1 or higher, with grain flow following the part contour.
- Ring rolling. Pierced blanks are expanded on a radial-axial ring rolling mill, which gives rings with no weld seam and continuous circumferential grain flow.
- Solution annealing. Forgings are solution annealed and then quenched quickly. Slow cooling through 650 to 800 °C is what sensitises Ni-Mo alloys, so quench rate is a controlled parameter.
- Machining. Rough or finish machining to drawing, in the solution-annealed condition.
- Inspection. Dimensional check, NDT, mechanical testing and PMI, followed by EN 10204 documentation.

Questions we are asked about Hastelloy B-4 and Alloy B-4
What is Hastelloy B-4 used for?
Hastelloy B-4, also designated Alloy B-4 (UNS N10629), is used for equipment handling hydrochloric acid and other reducing acids: reactor internals, chemical pump shafts and casings, forged flanges and tube sheets for heat exchangers, valve bodies and stems, and columns and towers in phenol, styrene and acetic acid plants. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. forges these parts to customer drawings at its factory in Jiangyin, Jiangsu Province, China.
Is Alloy B-4 the same as Hastelloy B-4?
Yes. The two names carry equal standing and refer to the same nickel-molybdenum chemistry, UNS N10629 and W.-Nr. 2.4600, with the same composition limits, the same mechanical properties and the same corrosion behaviour. Hastelloy® is a registered trademark of Haynes International, so mills outside that licence supply the grade generically as Alloy B-4 or under the UNS number. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. accepts enquiries under either name and certifies the material as Alloy B-4 to ASTM B564 or ASTM B462.
Is “Hastelloy B4” without the hyphen the same grade?
Yes. Hastelloy B4, Hastelloy B-4, Alloy B4 and Alloy B-4 are all written forms of the same grade, UNS N10629 / W.-Nr. 2.4600. The hyphen is a formatting habit rather than a technical distinction. Quote requests arrive in all four spellings and are handled identically.
Do you supply Haynes-branded Hastelloy® B-4?
No, and we say so plainly. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. is an independent open-die forging factory and is not a Haynes International licensee or distributor. We melt and forge the equivalent chemistry and certify it as Alloy B-4 / UNS N10629 to ASTM B564 or ASTM B462, with EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 documentation. If your specification names Haynes-branded material specifically, tell us at enquiry stage so the requirement can be addressed before the order is placed.
What is the difference between Hastelloy B-4 and Hastelloy B-2?
Hastelloy B-4 has tighter control of iron, chromium, silicon and carbon than Hastelloy B-2. That reduces grain-boundary precipitation, which lowers the risk of cracking during hot forming and welding and improves resistance to stress-corrosion cracking in service. Corrosion resistance in hydrochloric acid is comparable. The practical gain is fabricability and thermal stability.
Can Alloy B-4 be used with nitric acid?
No. Alloy B-4 contains only 0.5 to 1.5 % chromium and has no protective passive film, so oxidising acids such as nitric acid attack it rapidly. The same applies to ferric chloride, cupric chloride, wet chlorine and hypochlorite. For oxidising or mixed-acid service, use Alloy C-276, Alloy C-22 or Alloy 59 instead. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. forges all of these.
What is the maximum service temperature of Hastelloy B-4?
The published maximum mechanical service temperature is around 910 °C (1660 °F), but that figure is rarely the governing limit. In wet corrosive service the practical ceiling is set by the process medium, and prolonged exposure between 650 and 800 °C can cause intermetallic precipitation. Design temperature should always be agreed against the applicable pressure-vessel code.
What sizes of Alloy B-4 forged rings can you make?
Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. produces Hastelloy B-4 / Alloy B-4 seamless rolled rings from about 200 mm to 4000 mm outside diameter, with heights up to 1000 mm and single-piece weights from 20 kg to 15,000 kg. Because we are an open-die shop, sizes are made to order rather than to a fixed catalogue. Send the OD, ID, height and quantity for a firm answer.
What certification comes with Hastelloy B-4 forgings?
Every order ships with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate as standard, covering chemical analysis, heat treatment record, mechanical test results and NDT results, with the grade stated as Alloy B-4 / UNS N10629. EN 10204 3.2 certification witnessed by TUV, Bureau Veritas, SGS, Lloyd's Register or your own inspector is available on request. Ultrasonic testing follows EN 10228-3, SEP 1921 or ASTM A388.
How is Hastelloy B-4 heat treated after forging?
Hastelloy B-4 forgings are solution annealed and then quenched quickly. Rapid cooling through the 650 to 800 °C band is essential, because slow cooling lets Ni4Mo and Ni3Mo intermetallic phases precipitate at grain boundaries and degrade both ductility and corrosion resistance. We treat quench rate as a controlled process parameter and record the cycle on the certificate.
Can Alloy B-4 be welded?
Yes. Alloy B-4 is welded in the solution-annealed condition using GTAW or GMAW with matching ERNiMo-7 filler. Keep heat input and interpass temperature low, avoid excessive weaving, and clean the joint thoroughly, because nickel-molybdenum alloys are intolerant of sulphur and other low-melting contaminants. Post-weld solution annealing is recommended for the most aggressive service.
How long does delivery take, and do you export?
Typical lead time for Hastelloy B-4 / Alloy B-4 open-die forgings is 6 to 12 weeks depending on size, machining scope and material availability. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. exports worldwide from Shanghai and Zhangjiagang ports, with EXW, FOB, CIF or DDP terms. Contact sales@steelforgepieces.com or call 0086-189-2135-9659.
