2.4880 is the European material number (Werkstoff-Nr.) for a solid solution strengthened nickel-cobalt-chromium-silicon high-temperature alloy. It is equivalent to UNS N12160 and to NiCo29Cr28Si in DIN 17744. The nominal chemistry is about 37% Ni as balance, 29% Co, 28% Cr and 2.75% Si. The high chromium content together with silicon gives the alloy strong resistance to sulfidation and chloride attack in both reducing and oxidizing atmospheres, and it is rated for service up to about 1204 °C (2200 °F).
Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd., an open-die forging factory at No.1 Chengxiqiao Road, Zhouzhuang Town, Jiangyin City, Jiangsu Province, China, manufactures 2.4880 (UNS N12160) open-die forgings and seamless rolled rings to ASTM B564 and DIN 17744, supplied with EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 certificates. What is 2.4880? Standards and equivalent grades
2.4880 belongs to the Ni-Co-Cr-Si family of wrought high-temperature alloys. It is not precipitation hardened. Strength comes from solid solution strengthening, and corrosion performance comes from a chromium-rich and silicon-rich surface oxide that holds up in atmospheres carrying sulfur, chlorine, vanadium or phosphorus. The same alloy is sold under several names, so the table below lists the designations that appear on drawings and purchase orders.
| EN / DIN material number | 2.4880 (Werkstoff-Nr.) |
|---|---|
| DIN 17744 chemical designation | NiCo29Cr28Si |
| UNS number (North America) | N12160 |
| Common trade names | HAYNES HR-160 alloy; Nicrofer 3228 SiCo |
| Alloy type | Solid solution strengthened nickel-cobalt-chromium-silicon high-temperature alloy |
| Forgings specification | ASTM B564 |
| Bar and rod specification | ASTM B572 |
| Plate, sheet and strip | ASTM B435 |
| Fittings | ASTM B366 |
All designations above describe the same nominal Ni-Co-Cr-Si chemistry and are interchangeable for specification purposes. Confirm the grade, revision and acceptance criteria on your purchase order.
2.4880 chemical composition
Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal melts 2.4880 by EAF + VOD + ESR (electric arc furnace, vacuum oxygen decarburization, electroslag remelting) to control gas content and inclusion cleanliness before forging. Every heat is analysed by optical emission spectrometry and the result is reported on the mill certificate.

Specified limits under ASTM B564
Where 2.4880 forgings are ordered to ASTM B564, the specification limits include chromium 26.0 to 30.0%, silicon 2.4 to 3.0%, manganese 1.5% max, iron 3.5% max, carbon 0.15% max and sulfur 0.015% max, with nickel as balance. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal supplies to the aim chemistry stated on your drawing or specification and reports the actual heat analysis on the EN 10204 certificate.
2.4880 mechanical properties and performance
| Test temperature | Tensile strength | Yield strength (0.2% offset) | Elongation | Reduction of area |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 21 °C (70 °F) | 767 MPa | 314 MPa | 68 % | 73 % |

Corrosion and high temperature behaviour
- Sulfidation and chloride attack: strong resistance in both reducing and oxidizing atmospheres. This is the property that most often drives grade selection.
- Oxidation, hot corrosion, carburization, metal dusting and nitridation: good resistance across all five.
- Low melting point contaminants: resists attack by compounds formed from phosphorus, vanadium and similar impurities found in low grade fuels and chemical feedstocks.
- Service temperature: rated to about 1204 °C (2200 °F) per the alloy producer published data.

Manufacturing route for 2.4880 forgings
- Melting. EAF + VOD, followed by ESR where cleanliness or the specification requires it.
- Ingot and billet preparation. Surface conditioning and cropping before heating.
- Open-die forging or ring rolling to a controlled reduction ratio, so that grain flow follows the contour of the part.
- Heat treatment. Solution annealing with rapid cooling, or solution treatment plus ageing when the specification calls for it.
- Machining. Rough or finish machining to drawing, with the agreed test piece allowance.
- Testing. Chemical analysis, mechanical testing, hardness, grain size and non-destructive testing.
- Certification and packing. EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 certificate, marking, and seaworthy packing for export.
Heat treatment
2.4880 forgings are normally supplied solution annealed. Where the purchase specification requires it, solution treatment and ageing treatment are carried out together. The delivery condition and the test temperature are confirmed with the customer before production starts.
Machining guidance
2.4880 work hardens rapidly and is difficult to shape and machine using traditional techniques. Machinability is broadly comparable to stainless grades 302, 303, 410, 420, 430 and 430F, though 2.4880 is considerably stronger. Use rigid setups, sharp positive rake carbide tooling, low surface speed with a heavy positive feed, continuous cuts that avoid dwelling in the cut, and generous coolant.
