2.4636 is the Werkstoff material number for Nimonic 115, a precipitation-hardening nickel-chromium-cobalt-molybdenum superalloy developed as a creep-resisting material for continuous service at temperatures up to approximately 1010 °C (1850 °F). What is 2.4636?
2.4636 is strengthened by two mechanisms. Molybdenum dissolves into the nickel matrix and stiffens it by solid-solution strengthening. Aluminium and titanium, present at 4.5–5.5% and 3.5–4.5% respectively, precipitate as gamma-prime during ageing and provide the creep strength. Chromium at 14–16% gives oxidation resistance and cobalt at 13–15.5% stabilises the structure at high temperature.
The alloy was developed for turbine blades in aircraft gas turbines. It is still used mainly for hot-section parts: combustion chamber hardware, afterburner components, heat-treatment furnace parts, and rotating parts that must hold strength close to 1010 °C. 2.4636 work-hardens rapidly and has a narrow forging temperature window, so it is normally bought as a forging rather than machined from plate.

Heat treatment and melting route
Two-stage heat treatment
2.4636 is heat treated by solution treatment followed by ageing. The recommended procedure is:

Melting route: VIM, VAR and ESR
Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. melts 2.4636 by a double-melt route. Primary melting is by 3 t vacuum induction furnace (VIM). Vacuum melting protects the 4.5–5.5% aluminium and 3.5–4.5% titanium from oxidation. Remelting is by 6 t vacuum arc furnace (VAR), or by 3 t or 6 t inert-gas protected electroslag furnace (ESR). For ingots larger than the vacuum induction furnace can pour, the route is 25 t electric arc furnace, 25/50 t ladle furnace, 30/60 t vacuum oxygen decarburisation, then electroslag remelting.

Melting and remelting
2.4636 contains 4.5–5.5% aluminium and 3.5–4.5% titanium. Both oxidise readily, so air melting alone will not hold the specified chemistry. Heat treatment: why 1200 °C rating matters for 2.4636
2.4636 solution treats at 1190 °C and ages at 1100 °C. Ordinary bogie-hearth forging furnaces are rated to about 950 °C and cannot reach these temperatures, which is why fewer forge shops quote 2.4636 than quote Inconel or Incoloy grades.
