Heat resistant austenitic stainless steel
UNS S30415 Forgings EN 1.4818 · X6CrNiSiNCe19-10 · SS 2372 · 153 MA
Rolled rings, flanges, shafts, discs, tube sheets and bars in S30415, melted and forged in one works. The grade resists scaling in air up to 1000 C, which puts it in furnace and flue-gas equipment rather than in wet corrosion service.
We melt this steel ourselves rather than buying billet, so the certificate traces a finished ring or shaft back to its own heat number. Single pieces run to 30 tonnes and rolled rings to 6,000 mm outside diameter.

What S30415 is, and what it is not
S30415 sits on the familiar 18/8 austenitic base, but with silicon and nitrogen raised and a small cerium addition. Those three elements are the whole point of the grade.
Cerium and silicon stabilise the surface oxide, nitrogen adds solid solution strength, and together they hold off sigma phase precipitation. The result keeps useful strength hot while staying tough down to cryogenic temperatures, because the structure remains austenitic throughout. Metalcor rates the grade as resistant to scaling up to 1000 C; AZoM places optimal performance between 600 and 950 C.
Above roughly 550 C, creep strength rather than room temperature tensile strength normally sets the section thickness. That is the reason a furnace builder specifies 153 MA instead of plain 304 or 321: the design allowable at temperature is better, so the part can be lighter or last longer.
S30415 is a heat resistant grade, not a corrosion resistant one. It carries no molybdenum, published data note low resistance to oxidising sulphuric gases, and one property database puts the useful ceiling at about 420 C where wet corrosion governs instead of oxidation. For seawater, firewater, subsea or chloride bearing acid duty, specify A182 F51, F53, F55, F44 or 904L. We forge all of them. Tell us the service conditions and we will say which one fits.
Chemical composition
Two columns, because the specified EN limits and the typical mill analysis quoted for 153 MA are not identical. We melt to whichever your order calls up.

Forging, heat treatment, welding
Hot work and annealing
S30415 is hot formed between 900 and 1150 C and cooled quickly, then heat treated at 1020 to 1100 C. Rapid cooling out of the annealing furnace is what keeps the structure austenitic. Cold forming properties are good.
Our route runs melt and refine, forge or ring roll, solution anneal, machine, test, certify, all on one site. Solution treatment for this grade runs in the three high temperature car bottom furnaces rated to 1200 C, with chamber 3,500 by 1,300 by 1,100 mm; larger work goes into the 6,000 by 3,500 by 2,300 mm car bottom furnace. Forging direction and reduction are planned so grain flow follows the part contour, which is the practical reason a forged ring beats one cut from plate under thermal cycling.
Welding
Submerged arc, plasma arc, flux cored arc and shielded metal arc processes all apply. Use argon with 2 to 3 percent hydrogen as the base of the shielding and welding gases for proper penetration. A suitable matching filler metal is 1.4835. Keep joints full penetration and clear of notches, since this equipment spends its life thermally cycling.
Machining
Nitrogen alloyed heat resistant austenitics work harden more readily than plain 304. Plan for rigid setups, sharp tools, positive feed and plenty of coolant. We can supply forgings proof machined to an agreed allowance so your shop takes the minimum cut.

Where 153 MA forgings are used
The grade earns its place where the enemy is hot gas and scale, not brine.
Published application areas are furnace and apparatus engineering, the cement industry, hot air dryers, recuperators, superheater tubes and fluidised beds, waste combustion, preheating of exhaust gas and handling of hydrocarbon gases. More broadly, high temperature austenitic grades of this family serve the iron, steel and other metallurgical industries, general engineering and energy conversion plants.
In forged form that usually means furnace support and retaining rings, burner and nozzle parts, fan and roller shafts, tube sheets for recuperators, flanges on hot gas ducting, and sleeves and bushings running hot.
Testing and certification
Melting is by electric arc furnace with ladle refining and vacuum oxygen decarburisation, heat size up to 60 tonnes, with electroslag remelting available where the specification or the section size calls for it. Finished forgings are ultrasonically examined to EN 10228-3, SEP 1921 or ASTM A388 as the order requires. Dye penetrant examination, positive material identification, intergranular corrosion testing, impact testing and elevated temperature tensile testing can be added. Certificates are issued to EN 10204 3.1, or 3.2 with third party witness. The works holds CCS, BV, DNV, LR and NK approvals.
Questions we get asked
How hot can S30415 actually run?
Resistant to scaling in air up to 1000 C, with best performance between 600 and 950 C and a maximum mechanical service temperature of about 940 C in one property database. If wet corrosion rather than oxidation is the limiting mechanism, the useful ceiling drops to roughly 420 C. Above about 550 C, size the section on creep strength.
How does it compare with 304, and with 253 MA?
Same 18/8 base as 304, but with more silicon and nitrogen plus a cerium addition, which is what lifts oxidation resistance and hot strength above standard 304. 253 MA is the higher alloyed grade in the same family for the top of the temperature range. Outokumpu names both 153 MA and 253 MA as the high temperature austenitics where creep strength drives the design.
Can I use it in a sulphur bearing atmosphere?
Not where sulphur matters. The data sheet specifically notes low resistance to oxidising sulphuric gases. High temperature ferritic grades or nickel alloys chosen for sulphidation resistance are the usual alternatives.
Is it magnetic?
Austenitic and effectively non-magnetic in the solution annealed condition. Heavy cold work can raise a local magnetic response, as with other austenitic stainless steels.
What sizes can you forge?
Rolled rings from OD 50 mm to OD 6,000 mm, shafts turned up to 14,000 mm long, discs and tube sheets machined up to 5,000 mm diameter, bored cylinders up to 1,600 mm diameter by 10,000 mm, and single pieces up to 30 tonnes. Minimum order is 10 kg with no minimum piece count.
What do you need in order to quote?
A drawing or sketch with dimensions and tolerances, quantity, grade and governing specification, delivery condition wanted, as forged, solution annealed, proof machined or finish machined, the NDT level, and the certificate type. If the material is not fixed yet, send service temperature, pressure and atmosphere instead and we will propose candidates. Lead time normally runs 20 to 60 days.
