What UNS N04405 is
UNS N04405 is a solid-solution nickel-copper alloy containing a minimum of 63% nickel plus cobalt and 28.0 to 34.0% copper, with 0.025 to 0.060% sulfur added to improve machinability. It is the free-machining grade of alloy 400 and is sold under the trade name Monel R-405.
Nickel and copper are mutually soluble across the full composition range, so this alloy family is strengthened by solid solution rather than by precipitation. There is no ageing response. Strength comes from composition and from cold work only.
Sulfur is added on purpose. During solidification it forms nickel sulfide inclusions spread through the matrix. These inclusions break the chip during cutting, so chips do not run long or weld to the tool. Alloy 400 without the sulfur addition is difficult to machine. R-405 roughly doubles the usable cutting speed and makes automatic screw machine production practical.
The same inclusions cause problems at high temperature. Nickel sulfide melts well below the alloy itself. At welding and hot working temperatures it becomes a liquid film along the grain boundaries and the material tears when it is strained. This behaviour is called hot shortness. It is why N04405 is normally supplied as bar and nothing else.
Monel is a registered trademark of the Special Metals Corporation group of companies. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. is not affiliated with Special Metals. Material is supplied to the UNS N04405 chemistry and to the applicable ASTM or AMS specification, not to a trademarked brand.

Annealed UNS N04405 bar has a tensile strength of 485 to 585 MPa (70 to 85 ksi), a 0.2% offset yield strength of 170 to 275 MPa (25 to 40 ksi), 35 to 50% elongation and 60 to 76 HRB hardness.
| Condition | Tensile strength | Yield, 0.2% offset | Elongation in 2 in. | Hardness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Annealed | 485-585 MPa 70-85 ksi | 170-275 MPa 25-40 ksi | 35-50 % | 60-76 HRB 110-140 HB |

Nominal ranges for rod and bar. Acceptance values are those of the ordered specification and section size. The mill test certificate governs.
Machinability
UNS N04405 rates at about 40 to 45% against AISI B1112 free cutting steel. Alloy 400 rates at about 20 to 30%. This is the reason the grade exists. The alloy still work hardens, so use a rigid setup, sharp positive rake tooling and a heavy positive feed, and do not let the tool dwell in the cut.
Physical properties
Special Metals states that the physical constants of alloy 400 may be used for alloy R-405. The values below are given on that basis.

| Thermal conductivity | approx. 21.8 W/m.K | approx. 151 Btu.in/h.ft2.degF |
| Specific heat | approx. 427 J/kg.K | approx. 0.102 Btu/lb.degF |

Thermal and electrical values are alloy 400 constants applied to R-405 per the alloy producer. Request the mill certificate where a design depends on a specific value.
Can UNS N04405 be forged?
No. Forging is not recommended for UNS N04405, and the grade is not covered by ASTM B564. Where forged nickel-copper components are required, use UNS N04400 (Monel 400) to ASTM B564 or ASME SB-564. Corrosion resistance is the same and the chemistry is the same apart from sulfur.
Basis for this statement
Special Metals states in its R-405 bulletin that the alloy is used mainly for automatic screw machine stock, that it is not generally recommended for other applications, and that it is not recommended for forging. ASTM B564 lists UNS N04400 among its nickel-copper grades and does not list UNS N04405. The metallurgical reason is the sulfur content, which forms low melting nickel sulfide at the grain boundaries and causes hot tearing under forging strain.
Some suppliers offer UNS N04405 forgings against ASTM B564. That specification does not cover the grade, so the certificate cannot be issued correctly and the material can be rejected at incoming inspection.
What to specify instead
| Requirement | Specify | Standard |
|---|---|---|
| Forged rings, seamless rolled rings, flanges, shafts, discs, sleeves, tube sheets | UNS N04400 (Monel 400) | ASTM B564, ASME SB-564 |
| Any welded joint or weld overlay | UNS N04400 | ASTM B564, B127, B165 |
| Pressure retaining parts under ASME VIII Div. 1 | UNS N04400 forgings | ASME SB-564 |
| High volume turned parts: fasteners, valve stems, nozzles, fittings, instrument bodies | UNS N04405 bar | ASTM B164, ASME SB-164 |
| Free machining bar to an aerospace release | UNS N04405 | AMS 4674, AMS 7234 |
Both grades sit inside the same 63 Ni and 28 to 34 Cu window, so replacing N04405 with N04400 for a forged part costs nothing in corrosion performance. It only increases machining time, and it makes the part weldable and correctly certifiable.
Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal produces open-die and rolled ring forgings in nickel-copper alloy 400 to ASTM B564, with 100% ultrasonic inspection and EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 certification. Corrosion resistance and applications
UNS N04405 has the same corrosion resistance as alloy 400. It performs well in flowing seawater, brackish water, brine, steam, neutral and alkaline salts, caustic solutions, and in de-aerated hydrofluoric and hydrochloric acid. It is not suitable for strongly oxidising conditions such as nitric acid, wet chlorine, or aerated acids containing oxidising salts.
The alloy is one of the few economic materials of construction for de-aerated hydrofluoric acid. In seawater it tolerates high flow rates, unlike most copper alloys, and it resists chloride stress corrosion cracking, unlike austenitic stainless steels. In stagnant or fouled seawater it can suffer pitting and crevice attack, so it should be used in flowing service.
Typical uses for N04405 bar parts
- Valve internals: stems, seat rings, plugs and trim for ball, gate, globe, check and plug valves in seawater and HF service
- Fasteners and turned parts: bolts, studs, nuts, pins and bushings for marine and offshore structures
- Chemical processing: pump shafts, nozzles, instrument bodies and fittings for HF alkylation and chlor-alkali plants
- Oil and gas: instrument and control components listed under NACE MR0175 for sour service, subject to the hardness limits of that standard
- Marine: propeller shaft components, fittings and hardware in flowing seawater
- Desalination: turned components in brine heaters and evaporator bodies
Applications that use forged N04400
Pressure vessels and air receivers, shell and tube heat exchangers, columns and towers, tanks and silos, preheaters, process modules, crystallisers, wellhead and christmas tree bodies, feedwater and steam generator components, and pump and compressor casings. All of these are welded, pressure retaining or heavily hot worked, and all of them take N04400.

Frequently asked questions
What is UNS N04405?
UNS N04405, trade name Monel R-405, is the free-machining grade of nickel-copper alloy 400. It contains 63% minimum nickel plus cobalt, 28.0 to 34.0% copper, and 0.025 to 0.060% sulfur. The sulfur forms sulfide inclusions that break chips during machining. Corrosion resistance and physical properties are the same as UNS N04400.
Can UNS N04405 be forged?
No, forging is not recommended. Special Metals states that R-405 is not recommended for forging, and ASTM B564 does not list UNS N04405 among its grades. Sulfur forms low melting nickel sulfide films at the grain boundaries that cause hot tearing. For forged rings, flanges, shafts, discs and tube sheets, use UNS N04400 (Monel 400) to ASTM B564 or ASME SB-564.
What is the difference between UNS N04405 and UNS N04400?
Sulfur content. UNS N04400 caps sulfur at 0.024% maximum. UNS N04405 requires 0.025 to 0.060%. Everything else in the chemistry window is the same. That sulfur roughly doubles machinability and at the same time removes weldability and forgeability. N04400 is the structural grade that can be welded and forged. N04405 is the screw machine bar grade.
Is UNS N04405 weldable?
No. The sulfur causes hot cracking in the fusion zone and the heat affected zone. Where a welded joint is needed, use UNS N04400, which welds by GTAW, GMAW and SMAW with matching nickel-copper filler and needs no post weld heat treatment.
Is UNS N04405 magnetic?
Slightly. The Curie temperature of the nickel-copper 400 family is close to room temperature and shifts with the exact nickel to copper ratio, so bar may respond weakly to a magnet at ambient temperature and lose that response a little above it. Do not specify this alloy where reliably non-magnetic material is required.
Which standards cover UNS N04405?
ASTM B164 and ASME SB-164 for rod, bar and wire. Also listed are AMS 4674, AMS 7234, QQ-N-281, MIL-N-894 and NACE MR0175. The alloy is an approved material of construction under ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII Division 1 and Section III. ASTM B564, the nickel alloy forgings standard, does not cover it.
What is the machinability of UNS N04405?
About 40 to 45% against AISI B1112 free cutting steel, compared with about 20 to 30% for alloy 400. The alloy still work hardens, so use a rigid setup, sharp positive rake tooling and a heavy positive feed, and avoid dwelling in the cut.
