Nu30Fe in brief
Nu30Fe, usually written NiCu30Fe, is a nickel-copper alloy with roughly 63 to 70 % nickel and 28 to 34 % copper. Its other designations are UNS N04400, W.Nr. 2.4360, AFNOR NU30 and BS NA13. The same alloy is sold commercially as Alloy 400 or Monel® 400.
Nickel and copper dissolve completely in one another, so the alloy is single phase and has no precipitate to age. Strength can therefore be raised by cold work only, never by heat treatment. What it does offer is toughness from cryogenic temperature up to about 425 °C, very good behaviour in seawater and hydrofluoric acid, and strong resistance to chloride stress-corrosion cracking.

What Nu30Fe is
Nu30Fe is a wrought nickel-copper alloy with a face-centred cubic, single-phase structure. Nickel and copper are mutually soluble over the whole composition range, so no second phase forms and there is nothing available to precipitate during ageing. That single fact explains most of how the alloy behaves in service.
Annealed forgings come out soft and very ductile, typically 35 to 50 % elongation. Higher strength has to come from cold work, or from leaving the part in the as-forged condition. There is no ductile-to-brittle transition, which is why the alloy turns up in cryogenic valve and pump parts. The high nickel content gives good resistance to chloride stress-corrosion cracking, while the copper is what earns the alloy its reputation in hydrofluoric and dilute sulfuric acid.
A word about the name. Buyers often write "Nu30Fe" when the drawing means NiCu30Fe, the EN chemical designation for W.Nr. 2.4360, and sometimes the French designation NU30 gets mixed into it as well. All of them are the same material, UNS N04400. If your drawing says Nu30Fe, NiCu30Fe, NU30, NU-30M, NA13, Alloy 400 or 2.4360, we forge the same grade.

The limits below follow ASTM B164 for UNS N04400 and match the DIN 17743 range for NiCu30Fe. Every heat we forge is checked by spectrographic analysis and the result is printed on the EN 10204 3.1 certificate.

Nickel is the balance. Where a customer specification calls for tighter limits, for example reduced carbon for welded fabrication or controlled sulfur for sour service, we can melt to the restricted range.

The first row of Table 3 gives the guaranteed minimum values of ASTM B164 for annealed bar. Those are the figures we certify against unless your specification states something else. The remaining rows are typical values for design guidance.

Melting route and heat treatment
Melting
Nu30Fe billet for our forgings is produced by EAF melting with AOD or VOD refining. ESR remelting is available where a specification calls for improved cleanliness, reduced segregation or tighter ultrasonic acceptance criteria. In practice ESR is usually specified for thick-section pressure parts and for sour-service components.
Heat treatment
Since Nu30Fe cannot be age-hardened, only two conditions are meaningful for forgings.

Furnace charts and heat-treatment records are issued with the 3.1 certificate. If your drawing calls for a solution-plus-ageing cycle, please check the grade before ordering, because that route applies to the precipitation-hardenable Alloy K-500 (UNS N05500), not to Nu30Fe.
Corrosion performance
Nu30Fe works best in reducing environments and does better than higher-copper alloys in mildly oxidising ones. The main points to be aware of:
- Hydrofluoric acid: among the most resistant of all engineering alloys, at any concentration up to the boiling point.
- Seawater: excellent in flowing conditions. Where the water is stagnant, pitting and crevice corrosion can start, so either design for flow or move to a more resistant grade.
- Sulfuric and hydrochloric acid: good at moderate concentration and temperature, provided the solution is free of oxidising contaminants such as ferric or cupric ions, or aeration.
- Chloride stress-corrosion cracking: highly resistant, which is a large part of why the alloy is used offshore and in desalination.
- Alkalis and salts: resistant to caustic and to neutral and alkaline salt solutions.
- Avoid strongly oxidising media, including nitric acid, ferric chloride, wet chlorine, and ammonia where moisture and oxygen are both present.
If the service is more aggressive than that, it may be worth looking at Hastelloy C-276, Inconel 625 or Incoloy 825. We forge all of them and are happy to advise.

Minimum order quantity is one piece. Lead time normally runs 25 to 45 days from order confirmation, depending on melt availability, section size and how much machining is involved. If your part falls outside these ranges, send the drawing anyway and we will tell you straight away whether we can forge it.
How we manufacture Nu30Fe forgings
- Drawing review and forging design. We work out forging weight, reduction ratio and machining allowance, and confirm what mechanical properties are realistic for your section size.
- Billet supply. Traceable Nu30Fe billet from EAF plus AOD or VOD, with ESR where specified, carrying heat-number traceability from melt through to shipment.
- Heating. Controlled soak in a calibrated furnace within the forging window. Nickel-copper alloys pick up sulfur readily, so furnace atmosphere and fuel are controlled.
- Open-die forging or ring rolling. Upsetting and drawing to reach the specified reduction ratio, giving continuous grain flow along the contour of the part.
- Heat treatment. Annealing or stress relief per Table 5, with recorded furnace charts.
- Rough or finish machining. Turning, boring, drilling and milling to your drawing.
- Testing and NDT. Chemistry, mechanical testing, ultrasonic and penetrant inspection, hardness and PMI.
- Certification and packing. EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 certificate, marking, rust-free packing for sea freight, and export documentation.

What is Nu30Fe?
Nu30Fe is a nickel-copper solid-solution alloy containing roughly 63 to 70 % nickel and 28 to 34 % copper. It is more commonly written NiCu30Fe and is designated UNS N04400 and W.Nr. 2.4360, with AFNOR NU30 and BS NA13 as further equivalents. It cannot be hardened by heat treatment, so strength is raised only by cold work. It is used where high toughness plus resistance to seawater, hydrofluoric acid and reducing acids is required.
Is Nu30Fe the same as Monel 400?
Yes. Nu30Fe or NiCu30Fe (UNS N04400, W.Nr. 2.4360) is the generic designation for the alloy sold commercially as Alloy 400 or Monel® 400. MONEL® is a registered trademark of Special Metals Corporation. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. supplies the equivalent generic grade to UNS N04400 and DIN 17743 chemistry, not trademarked material.
What is the chemical composition of Nu30Fe?
Nickel 63.0 to 70.0 %, copper 28.0 to 34.0 %, iron 2.5 % max, manganese 2.00 % max, carbon 0.30 % max, silicon 0.50 % max and sulfur 0.024 % max. See Table 2 above.
Can Nu30Fe be hardened by heat treatment?
No. Nu30Fe is a single-phase solid-solution alloy with no precipitation-hardening mechanism, so it cannot be strengthened by ageing or quenching. Strength is increased only by cold working. Forgings are normally supplied annealed at 760 to 900 °C followed by rapid cooling, or stress-relieved at 540 to 650 °C.
What are the mechanical properties of Nu30Fe forgings?
For annealed bar, ASTM B164 minimum requirements are 480 MPa (70 ksi) tensile strength, 170 MPa (25 ksi) yield strength at 0.2 % offset and 35 % elongation. Typical annealed forgings run 480 to 585 MPa tensile, 170 to 345 MPa yield and 35 to 50 % elongation, with hardness around 110 to 150 HB.
What is the maximum service temperature of Nu30Fe?
Generally up to about 425 °C, with roughly 480 °C permitted under ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code rules and a range of -10 °C to 425 °C under VdTÜV material sheet 263. There is no ductile-to-brittle transition, so the alloy also performs well at cryogenic temperatures.

Every Nu30Fe forging ships with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate covering heat chemistry, mechanical test results, heat-treatment record and NDT results. EN 10204 3.2 certification witnessed by a third party such as TÜV, SGS, BV, DNV or Lloyd's Register is available on request.

Does Nu30Fe resist seawater and hydrofluoric acid?
Yes. Nu30Fe has excellent resistance to flowing seawater and is regarded as one of the most resistant engineering alloys to hydrofluoric acid at any concentration up to the boiling point. It also resists chloride stress-corrosion cracking. In stagnant seawater, pitting and crevice corrosion can occur, so flowing conditions are preferred.
