What Hastelloy G-30 is, and when to specify it

Hastelloy G-30 replaced Alloy G-3. Chromium was raised to about 30%, and cobalt and tungsten were added. The result holds up in wet-process phosphoric acid (P₂O₅), the impure acid used to make DAP, MAP and TSP fertilizer, where 316L, 904L and Alloy 28 corrode quickly.

High chromium also gives good resistance to nitric acid and to the nitric/hydrofluoric and nitric/hydrochloric mixtures used in metal pickling. Molybdenum and copper give moderate resistance to reducing acids such as hydrochloric and sulphuric. Against austenitic stainless steels, G-30 is far less prone to chloride stress corrosion cracking. It also resists grain-boundary precipitation in the weld heat-affected zone, so most chemical plant work uses it as welded.

Specify G-30 where the service is oxidising. Where the service is strongly reducing, meaning hot hydrochloric acid, wet chlorine or concentrated sulphuric acid, a high-molybdenum grade such as Hastelloy C-276 is the better choice. The grade comparison table below sets out the split.

Hastelloy G-30 and Alloy G-30: one grade, two names

Buyers write this grade both ways, and in the market the two names carry equal weight. HASTELLOY G-30 is the trade name registered by Haynes International. Alloy G-30 is the generic designation everyone else uses. Both point at the same material: UNS N06030, W.Nr. 2.4603, a nickel-chromium-iron-molybdenum-copper alloy with chromium near 30%. The shorthand G-30 and G30 mean the same thing again.

Which name you use on the enquiry does not change what we make. Our forgings are produced to the UNS N06030 chemistry limits and to ASTM B462, and the material test certificate carries the UNS number, which is what an inspector checks. Write Hastelloy G-30, Alloy G-30, G30 or N06030 on the drawing and you get the same material.

One point stated plainly: we are a forging factory, not a Haynes distributor. We manufacture to the published UNS N06030 specification. If your project requires material melted by Haynes International and carrying their brand, say so at enquiry stage so it can be sourced and priced separately.

These are the specified minimums for the solution annealed condition. Tested values on forgings normally run above them and are reported per heat and per test location on the material test certificate. Higher strength comes only from cold work, which lowers corrosion resistance. If a cold-worked or hardness-controlled condition is needed, for example NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 sour service, state it on the enquiry so the route can be agreed before production starts.

How we forge Hastelloy G-30 / Alloy G-30

Each step below sets up the next. The re-anneal after hot working is the step most often left out, and it is the usual reason a Hastelloy G-30 part underperforms in acid service.

  1. Melting and billet supplyUNS N06030 billet from vacuum-refined heats. EAF + AOD/VOD + ESR remelting is used where a tighter inclusion rating or better through-thickness soundness is required. Heat number traceability runs from billet to finished piece.
  2. Heating and open-die forgingBillets are soaked and forged in the hot working range. Reduction ratio and finish-forge temperature are controlled to break down the cast structure and give a uniform, fine grain size through the section. That is the reason to forge rather than machine from bar.
  3. Ring rollingFor rings and flanges, the upset and pierced blank is rolled to final proportions on the ring mill. This gives continuous circumferential grain flow instead of the interrupted flow of a cut ring.
  4. Solution annealing1177 °C (2150 °F), held 10 to 30 minutes according to section thickness, then water quenched. Rapid air cooling is acceptable only below about 10 mm section. Every hot-formed part is re-annealed to restore corrosion resistance. Furnace charts are retained.
  5. Descaling and machiningPickling or blasting to remove scale, then rough or finish machining to the drawing. Machining allowance is agreed at quotation stage so that test material and NDT surfaces are available where they are needed.
  6. Testing and non-destructive examinationChemistry, tensile testing, hardness, ultrasonic examination to EN 10228-3, SEP 1921 or ASTM A388, dye penetrant inspection and PMI as specified. Intergranular corrosion testing to ASTM G28 method A can be added for acid service.

Where Hastelloy G-30 / Alloy G-30 forgings are used

Phosphoric acid and fertilizer

Evaporator components, acid coolers, heat exchanger tube sheets, pump and agitator shafts and valve parts in 28 to 54% P₂O₅ wet-process acid carrying chlorides and fluorides.

Chemical process plant

Reactor internals, columns and towers, nozzles, forged flanges and tube sheets for nitric acid and mixed oxidising acid duties where stainless steels do not last.

Metal pickling and surface treatment

Pickling line hardware, tank fittings, heating coil components and pump parts exposed to nitric and hydrofluoric mixtures.

What is Hastelloy G-30 / Alloy G-30?

Hastelloy G-30 and Alloy G-30 are two names for the same grade, UNS N06030 (W.Nr. 2.4603), a solid-solution nickel-chromium-iron-molybdenum-copper alloy. It replaced Alloy G-3. Chromium sits near 30%, with cobalt and tungsten added, which is why it holds up in wet-process phosphoric acid and in oxidising acid mixtures containing nitric, hydrofluoric and hydrochloric acid. Common uses are phosphoric acid evaporators, acid heat exchangers and metal pickling equipment.

Which ASTM standard covers Hastelloy G-30 forgings?

ASTM B462 (ASME SB-462) covers forged or rolled UNS N06030 pipe flanges, forged fittings, valves and parts for corrosive high-temperature service. N06030 is the first grade listed in its scope. ASTM B581 covers N06030 rod and bar.

ASTM B564 does not list UNS N06030, so quote B462 on the purchase order for G-30 forgings.

Is Hastelloy G-30 the same as Alloy G-30?

Yes. They are two names for one grade, UNS N06030. HASTELLOY G-30 is the trade name registered by Haynes International. Alloy G-30 is the generic designation. G-30 and G30 are the shorthand. The chemistry, the ASTM B462 requirements and the heat treatment are identical whichever name is used.

Should I write Hastelloy G-30 or Alloy G-30 on the purchase order?

Either is understood, but the safest practice is to put the UNS number on the order: UNS N06030 to ASTM B462. That is the designation an inspector checks against the material test certificate, and it removes any argument about trade names. Adding "Hastelloy G-30 / Alloy G-30" alongside it as a description is fine.

Do you supply original Haynes HASTELLOY G-30 material?

We are an open-die forging factory, not a Haynes International distributor. We manufacture forgings to the published UNS N06030 chemistry and to ASTM B462, certified to EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2.

If your specification requires material melted by Haynes and carrying their brand, state it at enquiry stage. It can be sourced, but it is priced and scheduled separately from our own production.

Can Hastelloy G-30 be age hardened?

No. G-30 is solid-solution strengthened and is not precipitation hardenable, so no ageing treatment applies. Forgings are supplied solution annealed at 1177 °C (2150 °F) and water quenched. Strength above the annealed minimum comes only from cold work, which lowers corrosion performance and has to be agreed before production.

What heat treatment is applied to Hastelloy G-30 forgings?

Solution annealing at 1177 °C (2150 °F), held 10 to 30 minutes depending on section thickness, then water quenched. Rapid air cooling is acceptable only below about 10 mm section.

Re-annealing after hot forming is essential. A hot-formed part that was not re-annealed has lower corrosion resistance even though its chemistry and dimensions are correct.

What are the minimum mechanical properties in the solution annealed condition?

Should I specify Hastelloy G-30 or Hastelloy C-276?

Use G-30 in oxidising conditions: wet-process phosphoric acid, nitric acid and mixed nitric/hydrofluoric acid, where its 30% chromium is the controlling element. Use C-276 in reducing conditions such as hot hydrochloric acid, wet chlorine and concentrated sulphuric acid, where its 15 to 17% molybdenum matters more. G-30 is the normal material for phosphoric acid evaporator service. C-276 is not.

What certification is supplied?

EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates covering heat chemistry, mechanical results and heat treatment records as standard. EN 10204 3.2 witnessed by TUV, SGS, BV, DNV or Lloyd's Register on request. Ultrasonic testing to EN 10228-3, SEP 1921 or ASTM A388, PMI and dye penetrant inspection can be added to the scope.

What is the lead time?

Lead time depends on billet availability, piece weight and the inspection scope. UNS N06030 is a specialty grade, so allow time for melting or billet procurement on top of forging, solution annealing, machining and testing. Send the drawing and quantity for a delivery schedule with the quotation.

How is Hastelloy G-30 machined and welded?

It work hardens fast and has low thermal conductivity, so machining needs rigid setups, sharp coated carbide tooling, positive rake, slow speed, heavy positive feed and plenty of coolant. Do not let the tool dwell. A rubbing tool work hardens the surface and the next pass has to cut through it.

For welding, GTAW and GMAW with matching ENiCrMo-11 or ERNiCrMo-11 filler are standard. The alloy resists grain-boundary precipitation in the heat-affected zone, so chemical plant work normally uses it as welded.
