What is NILO 36?

NILO 36 is a 36% nickel-iron controlled expansion alloy, designated UNS K93600 and supplied to ASTM F1684. Its coefficient of thermal expansion is about 1.3 × 10−6 /K between 20 °C and 100 °C, roughly one tenth that of carbon steel at temperatures up to 204 °C (400 °F). It also keeps good strength and toughness at cryogenic temperatures.

NILO 36 is the same alloy as Invar 36, Alloy 36, NiFe36 (1.3912), Pernifer 36 and the Chinese grade 4J36. NILO is a trade name rather than a separate chemistry. Because the alloy is used where dimensions must not drift, it is normally bought as a forging rather than a casting or a weldment. Chemical composition of NILO 36

Nickel sits at a nominal 36% with iron as the balance. The residual limits matter more than they look. Phosphorus and sulfur are held very low because both promote hot cracking during forging and welding, and chromium and cobalt are capped because either will shift the expansion curve away from the Invar minimum.

Mechanical properties at temperature

Typical annealed values. Strength falls away steadily with temperature while elongation climbs, so NILO 36 stays ductile long after it has lost most of its room temperature strength. Design allowables should come from your code of construction rather than from this table.

Cryogenic behavior

NILO 36 retains good strength and toughness at cryogenic temperatures. A near zero expansion rate together with useful impact toughness at −162 °C is why the alloy became standard for LNG containment membranes and transfer lines. Where Charpy testing at a specified low temperature is required, state the test temperature and acceptance criteria on the order.

Physical properties

Two numbers decide whether NILO 36 suits an application: the expansion coefficient and the Curie temperature. Below the Curie point the magnetostrictive effect that produces the Invar anomaly is active and expansion is minimal. Above it the effect disappears and the alloy expands like any other nickel-iron. That sets the ceiling on the useful range of the alloy.

05 / Process

How we melt and forge NILO 36

Controlled expansion alloys are sensitive to cleanliness. Inclusions and segregation lower toughness, and they also produce local variation in the expansion coefficient, which defeats the purpose of specifying the alloy in the first place. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. therefore melts NILO 36 by the EAF + VOD + ESR route.

  • EAF, electric arc furnace melt of the base charge.
  • VOD, vacuum oxygen decarburization to strip carbon, hydrogen and oxygen and to trim the nickel to the 36% aim point.
  • ESR, electroslag remelting, which gives a directionally solidified, low segregation ingot with tight sulfur control. This is what makes a large NILO 36 forging behave uniformly from surface to core.

Forging practice

Ingots are upset and drawn on open-die hammers and presses, and rings are expanded on a ring rolling mill. The aim is a fully worked, recrystallized structure with the grain flow following the part contour. A properly reduced rolled ring behaves very differently in service from a ring cut out of plate.

Finishing below about 900 °C risks cracking and leaves residual stress that shows up later as dimensional drift. If your part needs a documented forging reduction ratio or grain flow verification, say so at the inquiry stage so the ingot size can be planned around it.

06 / Heat treatment

Stabilizing heat treatment

NILO 36 is not precipitation hardenable. What heat treatment does for this alloy is remove the residual stress and metastable structure that cause a finished part to change size weeks or months after machining. For instruments, molds and metrology fixtures, the stabilizing cycle is what decides whether the part holds tolerance in service.

Machining and welding NILO 36

Machining

NILO 36 machines like a gummy austenitic. It work hardens, it smears rather than shears, and it will glaze a dull tool quickly. Use sharp positive rake tooling, a rigid setup, moderate surface speed with a heavy positive feed so the tool cuts under the hardened layer, and flood coolant. Do not let a tool dwell in the cut. For dimensionally critical parts, rough machine, run the stabilizing cycle in clause 06, then finish.

Welding

NILO 36 welds readily by GTAW, GMAW, plasma and electron beam processes with matching 36% nickel-iron filler. Keep heat input low and interpass temperature moderate to limit distortion. Clean the joint faces properly, since sulfur and phosphorus pick-up from oil, marking paint or grinding residue is the usual cause of hot cracking in this alloy. Where the weldment has to hold dimension, run a stabilizing treatment afterwards.

Weld filler expands at the parent rate only if it matches the parent. A stainless or nickel filler in a NILO 36 joint reintroduces the expansion mismatch the part was specified to avoid.
