## Summary

X3CrNiMo13-4 (EN material number 1.4313) is a low carbon, soft martensitic stainless steel containing nominally 12 to 14% Cr, 3.5 to 4.5% Ni and 0.3 to 0.7% Mo with maximum 0.05% C. It is the European equivalent of UNS S41500, ASTM A182 F6NM and AISI 415, and the wrought counterpart of the cast grade CA6NM.

The low carbon content limits chromium carbide formation, giving better toughness and weld behaviour than conventional martensitic stainless steels such as 1.4021 or 410. Quench and temper treatment gives 0.2% proof strength from 520 MPa (+QT650) up to 800 MPa (+QT900). Main applications are hydro turbine components, pump and compressor parts, valve bodies, stems and seats, and oilfield equipment, over a service range of about -60 to +350 degrees C.

Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. produces X3CrNiMo13-4 forgings to EN 10250-4, EN 10222-5 and ASTM A182 F6NM, supplied with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates and shipped worldwide.

## Chemical composition

EN 10088-2:2005, weight %:

| C | Si | Mn | P | S | Cr | Ni | Mo | N |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| max 0.05 | max 0.70 | max 1.50 | max 0.040 | max 0.015 | 12.0-14.0 | 3.5-4.5 | 0.30-0.70 | max 0.020 |

ASTM A182 F6NM / UNS S41500, weight %:

| C | Si | Mn | P | S | Cr | Ni | Mo |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| max 0.05 | max 0.60 | 0.50-1.00 | max 0.030 | max 0.030 | 11.5-14.0 | 3.5-5.5 | 0.50-1.00 |

F6NM permits up to 5.5% Ni and requires minimum 0.50% Mo, so a heat certified to EN 1.4313 is not automatically acceptable as F6NM. Dual certified material must fall inside both windows.

## Applications

Hydropower: runner blades, crowns and bands, guide vanes, wicket gates, shafts, sleeves. Oil and gas: valve bodies and bonnets, seats, stems, wellhead and oilfield equipment, with max 23 HRC heat treatment for sour service. Rotating equipment: pump impellers, casings, wear rings, compressor and centrifuge parts. Process and power: chemical plant components, feedwater and boiler circuit parts, dies and tooling for pressure die casting.

## Welding, machining, corrosion

Welding: better than conventional martensitic grades because carbon is limited to 0.05%, and the type is routinely welded and weld repaired in hydro turbine work. Not freely weldable. Preheat, a qualified procedure and post weld tempering below the original tempering temperature are normally required. Some supplier datasheets classify 1.4313 as unsuitable for welding, so qualify the procedure on representative thickness.

Machining: machine in the annealed condition (max 320 HBW) where possible. Use rigid setups, sharp positive rake carbide and generous coolant.

Corrosion: moderate resistance, suited to low chloride media. Polishing of critical surfaces improves performance. Not a substitute for duplex or super austenitic alloys in seawater.

## Inspection and documents

Standard: EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate covering chemical composition, mechanical properties and test results. On request: ultrasonic testing to EN 10228-3, ASTM A388 or SEP 1921; magnetic particle and dye penetrant inspection; sub-zero Charpy V notch impact testing; intergranular corrosion testing; hardness survey; max 23 HRC for NACE MR0175 and ISO 15156; positive material identification; third party witness inspection.
