# UNS S30415 Forgings (EN 1.4818 / X6CrNiSiNCe19-10 / 153 MA)

**UNS S30415 is a heat resistant austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel, equivalent to EN 1.4818 / X6CrNiSiNCe19-10 and Swedish SS 2372, and sold under the trade name 153 MA. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. forges it into rolled rings, flanges, shafts, discs, tube sheets, sleeves and bars, melted and forged in one works in Jiangyin, Jiangsu, China.**

Silicon, nitrogen and cerium additions give the grade oxide stability, resistance to sigma phase precipitation and strength at high temperature. The austenitic structure stays tough down to cryogenic temperatures. The grade is resistant to scaling in air up to 1000 C, with optimal performance between 600 and 950 C.

It is a heat resistant grade, not a corrosion resistant one. It contains no molybdenum, published data note low resistance to oxidising sulphuric gases, and the useful ceiling drops to about 420 C where wet corrosion rather than oxidation governs. For seawater, subsea or chloride duty use duplex or super duplex grades such as A182 F51, F53 and F55, or high molybdenum austenitics such as F44 and 904L.

## Fabrication

- Hot forming: 900 to 1150 C, followed by rapid cooling.
- Heat treatment: 1020 to 1100 C, rapid cooling.
- Cold forming: good.
- Welding: submerged arc, plasma arc, flux cored arc and shielded metal arc. Argon with 2 to 3 percent hydrogen as the base of shielding and welding gases. Suitable matching filler metal 1.4835.
- Machining: work hardens more readily than plain 304. Use rigid setups, sharp tools, positive feed and generous coolant.

## Applications

Furnace and apparatus engineering, cement industry, hot air dryers, recuperators, superheater tubes and fluidised beds, waste combustion, preheating of exhaust gas, handling of hydrocarbon gases. High temperature austenitic grades of this family also serve the iron, steel and other metallurgical industries, general engineering and energy conversion plants. Above about 550 C, creep strength is normally the dimensioning property.

Typical forged parts: furnace support and retaining rings, burner and nozzle components, fan and roller shafts, recuperator tube sheets, hot gas duct flanges, sleeves and bushings.

## Forged products and size envelope

| Product | Size limit |
|---|---|
| Seamless rolled rings | OD 50 mm to OD 6,000 mm |
| Forged shafts | up to 14,000 mm turned length |
| Discs, tube sheets, blocks | up to 5,000 mm machined diameter |
| Bored cylinders and sleeves | up to 1,600 mm dia x 10,000 mm |
| Single piece weight | up to 30,000 kg |

Also forged flanges, bars, blocks, valve bodies, bonnets, stems and seat rings.

## Testing and certification

Melting by electric arc furnace with ladle refining and vacuum oxygen decarburisation, heat size up to 60 t, with electroslag remelting where required. Ultrasonic examination to EN 10228-3, SEP 1921 or ASTM A388.
