## Summary

ASTM A182 Grade F62 is the forging grade of UNS N08367, a low-carbon, nitrogen-bearing
super-austenitic stainless steel with a nominal analysis of 21 % chromium, 25 % nickel and
6.5 % molybdenum. F62 is one of the austenitic grades of ASTM A182/A182M, the specification
for forged pipe flanges, forged fittings, valves and parts for high-temperature service.
It is supplied solution treated and liquid quenched, with acceptance minima of 95 ksi
(655 MPa) tensile strength, 45 ksi (310 MPa) yield strength, 30 % elongation and 50 %
reduction of area. The molybdenum and nitrogen levels give resistance to chloride pitting,
crevice corrosion and chloride stress-corrosion cracking, which is why the grade appears in
seawater, desalination, flue-gas desulphurisation and offshore specifications.

We melt this grade ourselves. The electric arc furnace, ladle furnace and vacuum oxygen
decarburisation units sit on the same site as the presses, the ring mills, 14 heat-treatment
furnaces and the machine shop, so the certificate traces a part back to its melt number
rather than stopping at a purchased billet.

### Pitting resistance and PREN

Project specifications often set a minimum PREN for 6 % molybdenum grades. Which formula
applies matters, because the nitrogen coefficient differs between the published versions,
so name the formula on the purchase order. One published guide treats a PREN above 40 as
the working threshold for dependable seawater service at ambient to moderate temperatures.
We report the full heat analysis so PREN can be calculated by whichever formula the
specification names.

## Mechanical properties

Acceptance minima at room temperature, ASTM A182 F62. These are not typical values.

| Property | Imperial | Metric |
|---|---|---|
| Tensile strength, min | 95 ksi | 655 MPa |
| Yield strength, 0.2 % offset, min | 45 ksi | 310 MPa |
| Elongation in 2 in. [50 mm] or 4D, min | 30 % | 30 % |
| Reduction of area, min | 50 % | 50 % |
| Brinell hardness | Not specified by ASTM A182 for this grade | |

Because of the nitrogen content this grade normally tests well above the A182 minima, and
it is stronger than 316L. Producer literature credits UNS N08367 with ASME allowable
stresses up to 75 % higher than 316L and more than double those of copper-nickel alloys,
with ASME coverage to 800 F. Those are published reference figures, not a guarantee on a
particular heat. State the values a design depends on at enquiry stage.

ASTM A182 calls for one tension test per heat on austenitic grades. Specimens are removed
only after all heat treatment is finished, and test blanks get about the same amount of
working as the finished forging and are heat treated with it.

## Heat treatment

| Heat treat type | Solutioning temperature, min | Cooling media | Quench cool below |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solution treat and quench | 2025 F [1105 C] | Liquid | 500 F [260 C] |

After hot working, forgings are cooled below 1000 F [538 C] before heat treatment starts.
Where the temperature straight after hot working has not dropped below the minimum solution
annealing temperature, A182 also allows austenitic grades such as F62 to be rapid quenched
individually from the forging heat. Three high-temperature car-bottom furnaces cover the
solution temperature this grade needs, and two 15 m well-type furnaces allow long shafts to
be quenched vertically.

## Melting route

F62 runs through the electric arc furnace, is refined in a ladle furnace and is decarburised
under vacuum, which is the route that delivers both the 0.030 % maximum carbon and the tight
0.18 to 0.25 % nitrogen band. Protective-atmosphere electroslag remelting is available where
an order calls for it. Maximum heat size is 60 tonnes.

| Route | Equipment | Capacity | Purpose on F62 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary melting | Electric arc furnace, EF | 25 t | Melt and initial alloying |
| Ladle refining | Ladle furnace, LF | 25 t, 50 t | Desulphurisation, alloy trim, temperature control |
| Vacuum degassing | Vacuum oxygen decarburisation, VOD | 30 t, 60 t | Low carbon with controlled nitrogen |
| Remelting, optional | Protective-atmosphere electroslag, IGESR | 3 t, 6 t | Extra cleanliness on nitrogen-alloyed grades |

A182 permits stainless grades to be melted by electric furnace with optional separate
degassing and refining, by vacuum furnace, or by either route followed by vacuum or
electroslag consumable remelting, so both routes meet the specification. Enough discard is
taken to keep the material free of injurious piping and undue segregation.

## Machining notes

F62 is ductile in the solution-annealed condition but work hardens fast and needs more power
at the tool than plain carbon steel. Chips come off stringy and tough. As a starting point
only, around 70 sfm for turning and milling and 50 sfm for drilling, with a rigid setup,
positive feed and plenty of coolant.

## Product forms

Seamless rolled rings and forged rings, weld neck, blind and slip-on flange blanks, round
bars and billets, forged discs and disc blanks, hollow forgings, sleeves and bushings,
shafts, spindles and eccentric shafts, tube sheets, nozzles, valve bodies, valve stems, seat
rings and valve blocks, and tube and pipe blanks bored from solid. All made to drawing.

### Weight limit to check before raising the order

Products made to ASTM A182/A182M are limited to a maximum weight of 10 000 lb [4540 kg].
For larger products, and for products for other applications, the standard refers purchasers
to ASTM A336/A336M and ASTM A965/A965M. Our press and furnace capacity goes to 30 tonnes per
piece, so a heavy F62 ring or shaft is producible here but needs the correct specification on
the order. A182 also states that flanges of any type, elbows, return bends, tees and header
tees shall not be machined directly from bar stock, while cylindrical parts may be machined
from forged or rolled solution-annealed austenitic bar without further hot working.

### Size envelope

| Product | Limit | Set by |
|---|---|---|
| Seamless rolled rings | up to OD 6000 mm | 6 m radial-axial ring mill, with 3 m and 1 m mills below |
| Smallest ring | from OD 50 mm | Upset and punch route |
| Forged shafts | up to 14 000 mm turned length | C61160 lathe, 15 m well furnace for vertical quench |
| Discs, tube sheets, blocks | up to 5000 mm machined diameter | 5000 mm vertical turning lathe |
| Bored cylinders, hollow shafts | up to 1600 mm dia by 10 000 mm | CNC deep-hole drilling machine |
| Single piece weight, plant | up to 30 000 kg | 60 t heat size, 6300 t press |
| Single piece weight, under A182 | up to 4540 kg | Specification scope limit |
| Minimum order | 10 kg | No minimum piece count |

## Applications

UNS N08367 was developed as a seawater-resistant material and has since been used across a
wide range of corrosive service. Producer literature lists flue-gas desulphurisation
scrubbers, reverse osmosis, distillation columns, offshore oil and gas, and heat exchangers,
backed by more than 25 years of seawater service.

Regular end uses for our forgings: seawater, firewater and subsea pipework with risers,
manifolds, pressure vessels, valves and heat exchangers; desalination plant including
high-pressure reverse osmosis trains and seawater piping; flue-gas desulphurisation and
other pollution-control equipment in power generation; pulp and paper digesters, liquor
tanks and paper machines; chemical and pharmaceutical reaction vessels; mining, metallurgical
and marine equipment; and corrosion-resistant components in power transmission, gearboxes,
turbines and gas compressors.

Where sour service governs rather than chloride pitting, say so at enquiry, because
NACE MR0175 and ISO 15156 add hardness and heat-treatment constraints on top of A182.

## Testing and certification

The works holds CCS, BV, DNV, LR and NK classification society approvals and runs its own
laboratory.

| Discipline | Standard | Where performed |
|---|---|---|
| Chemical analysis, optical emission | ASTM E415 | On site |
| Carbon and sulphur, infrared | ASTM E1019 | On site |
| Positive material identification | Handheld alloy analyser | On site |
| Tensile | ASTM A370, ISO 6892 | On site, 600 kN and 300 kN machines |
| Charpy V-notch impact | ASTM A370, to -60 C | On site |
| Ultrasonic | ASTM A388, EN 10228-3, SEP 1921 | On site |
| Magnetic particle and penetrant | ASTM E709 | On site |
| Grain size, metallography | ASTM E112 | On site |
| Intergranular attack | ASTM A262, ASTM G28 | Accredited third-party laboratory |
| Pitting resistance | ASTM G48 | Accredited third-party laboratory |
| Impact below -60 C | ASTM A370 | Accredited third-party laboratory |

ASTM A182 provides for intergranular attack testing to ASTM A262 practices on austenitic
stainless steels where a purchaser specifies it as a supplementary requirement, so name it
on the order rather than assuming it. Certificates are issued to EN 10204 3.1, or to
EN 10204 3.2 witnessed by BV, DNV, LR, SGS, TUV or your own inspector. Supporting records
cover heat-treatment charts, NDT reports, dimensional reports and PMI results. Traceability
runs from the melt number through forging, heat treatment and machining to shipment.

## Questions and answers

**Is ASTM A182 F62 a stainless steel or a nickel alloy?**
A stainless steel, specifically a super-austenitic stainless with about 6 % molybdenum and
23.5 to 25.5 % nickel. The high nickel content means it is often shelved beside nickel
alloys, but ASTM A182 classifies it among the austenitic stainless steels.

**What are the minimum mechanical properties?**
95 ksi [655 MPa] tensile, 45 ksi [310 MPa] yield, 30 % elongation in 2 in. [50 mm] or 4D,
50 % reduction of area. No Brinell hardness limit for this grade.

**How is F62 heat treated?**
Solution treat and quench: 2025 F [1105 C] minimum, liquid media, quenched below 500 F [260 C].

**Do you melt F62 yourselves or buy billet?**
We melt it. A 25 t electric arc furnace, 25 t and 50 t ladle furnaces and 30 t or 60 t
vacuum oxygen decarburisation, with protective-atmosphere electroslag remelting available.
Maximum heat size 60 tonnes. The certificate traces the part to its melt number rather than
to a purchased billet certificate.

**What is the largest F62 forging you can make?**
Plant capacity runs to 30 000 kg per piece, rings to 6000 mm outside diameter and shafts to
14 000 mm turned length, subject to the A182 scope limit of 4540 kg noted above.

**Why pick F62 over duplex 2205 or a nickel alloy?**
Producer data positions UNS N08367 above conventional duplex stainless steels on strength
and corrosion resistance, with practical immunity to chloride stress-corrosion cracking, and
below nickel-base alloys on cost. Duplex F51 and F53 remain strong candidates on strength
per unit cost, so decide against the actual chloride level, temperature and design code.

**What is the lead time and minimum order?**
Minimum order 10 kg with no minimum piece count. Lead time 20 to 60 days from order
confirmation, at the upper end for remelted grades and for witnessed or third-party testing.

**What do you need in order to quote?**
A drawing, or for rings and discs the outside diameter, inside diameter and height or
thickness, plus quantity, specification and edition, delivery condition, heat treatment and
testing requirements, certificate type and destination port.

**Do you forge other 6 % molybdenum grades?**
Yes: A182 F44, 904L, Incoloy 926, Sanicro 28 and Alloy 31.
