ASTM A182 Grade F317 is the forging specification for 317 austenitic stainless
steel, designated UNS S31700 and EN 1.4449. It is a molybdenum-bearing
modification of 316 stainless steel containing 18.0 to 20.0 percent chromium,
11.0 to 15.0 percent nickel and 3.0 to 4.0 percent molybdenum, with carbon
limited to 0.08 percent maximum. The extra molybdenum improves resistance to
pitting, crevice corrosion and acid attack compared with 316. Under ASTM
A182/A182M, F317 forgings must reach a minimum tensile strength of 515 MPa
(75 ksi) and a minimum yield strength of 205 MPa (30 ksi).

Note: 1.4449 is the EN number for 317 / S31700. The number 1.4438
(X2CrNiMo18-15-4) belongs to the low carbon variant 317L / UNS S31703, which is
a different material with a tighter carbon limit. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co.,
Ltd. forges both.

## Manufacturing route at Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd.

1. Melting: EAF plus VOD refining, ESR remelt available for tighter cleanliness
   or segregation control.
2. Open-die forging: upsetting and drawing on hydraulic presses; seamless rolled
rings produced on a ring-rolling mill for continuous circumferential grain flow.
3. Cooling after hot work: forgings cooled below 538 C (1000 F) before heat
   treatment, as ASTM A182 requires.
4. Solution annealing: 1010 to 1121 C (1850 to 2050 F) followed by rapid cooling.
Grade 317 cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
5. Ultrasonic testing: EN 10228-3, SEP 1921 or ASTM A388. PT, MT, PMI and
ASTM A262 intergranular testing on request.
6. Certification: EN 10204 3.1 as standard, EN 10204 3.2 with third party
witness such as TUV, BV, LR or SGS on request.

## Applications

Pulp and paper digesters, liquor tanks and paper machine parts; chemical and
petrochemical process equipment; flue gas desulphurisation scrubbers, absorber
towers and stack liners; heat exchangers, condensers and pressure vessels;
textile processing plant; marine and offshore valves, pumps and piping
components. The grade resists atmospheric corrosion and works in both
moderately oxidising and moderately reducing conditions.

## Questions and answers

**What is the difference between A182 F317 and A182 F317L?**
Both are 317 type austenitic stainless steels with 3 to 4 percent molybdenum.
F317 (UNS S31700, EN 1.4449) allows up to 0.08 percent carbon. F317L (UNS
S31703, EN 1.4438) is the low carbon version, which lowers the risk of chromium
carbide precipitation in the weld heat affected zone. Choose F317L for welded
fabrications that cannot be solution annealed afterwards.

**Is A182 F317 better than 316 stainless steel?**
For pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride bearing, sulphurous and acidic
media, yes, because of the higher molybdenum. It is harder to machine than 304.
Where corrosion margin is not the limiting factor, 316 or 316L is cheaper.

**Can A182 F317 be hardened by heat treatment?**
No. Grade 317 is austenitic. Strength can only be raised by cold work. The
standard cycle is solution annealing at 1010 to 1121 C followed by rapid cooling.

**What testing and certification come with F317 forgings?**
Chemical analysis and mechanical test results on an EN 10204 3.1 certificate as
standard, EN 10204 3.2 available. Ultrasonic examination to EN 10228-3, SEP 1921
or ASTM A388. ASTM A262 intergranular corrosion testing, PMI, hardness survey
and impact testing on request.
