## 1. Grade summary

153 MA is a heat resistant austenitic stainless steel micro-alloyed with cerium and nitrogen
(EN 1.4818, X6CrNiSiNCe19-10, UNS S30415), used for continuous service above 550 °C.

Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. forges it into seamless rolled rings, flanges, round bars, discs,
sleeves, bushings, tube sheets and shafts to EN 10095 and EN 10250-4, ultrasonically tested to
EN 10228-4 or ASTM A388, supplied with EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 certificates.

153 MA is a trademark of Outokumpu Oyj; orders are quoted and certified against the equivalent EN and
UNS designations. Every part is made to drawing, so there is no list price — dimensions, quantity and
inspection class are needed for a firm quotation, normally returned within one working day.

## 2. Equivalent designations

| System | Designation |
| --- | --- |
| Trade name | 153 MA, trademark of Outokumpu Oyj; historically Avesta 153 MA, now Outokumpu Therma 153 MA |
| EN material number | 1.4818 |
| EN steel name | X6CrNiSiNCe19-10 |
| UNS | S30415 |
| Grade family | Austenitic, heat resistant, micro-alloyed |
| Next grade up | 253 MA, 1.4835, S30815 — rated to 1150 °C |

Buyers often move to 153 MA from 309S / 1.4833 when creep deformation rather than scaling is the failure
mode. Outokumpu records a bell furnace inner cover at 770–850 °C in 92 % nitrogen with 8 % hydrogen where
309S was replaced by 153 MA to obtain the creep strength required.

## 3. Chemical composition (% by mass)

| Element | EN 1.4818 limits (Metalcor) | Typical (AZoM) | Typical (Outokumpu) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Carbon, C | 0.05 max | 0.04–0.06 | 0.05 |
| Silicon, Si | 1.30 max | 1–2 | alloyed |
| Chromium, Cr | 17.5–19.5 | 18–19 | 18.5 |
| Nickel, Ni | 8.5–10.5 | 9–10 | 9.1 |
| Nitrogen, N | 0.15 max | 0.12–0.18 | 0.15 |
| Cerium, Ce | micro-alloyed | 0.03–0.08 | alloyed |
| Iron, Fe | balance | about 69 | balance |

Cerium, nitrogen and silicon give oxide scale stability, resistance to sigma phase precipitation and
strength at temperature. The austenitic matrix keeps its toughness down to cryogenic temperatures.

## 5. Physical properties at 20 °C

| Property | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Density | 7.8 g/cm³ |
| Specific heat capacity | 500 J/kg·K |
| Thermal conductivity | 15 W/m·K |
| Electrical resistivity | 0.84 Ω·mm²/m |

---

## 6. Service temperature

| Source | Figure |
| --- | --- |
| Outokumpu Therma table, EN 10095 | 1050 °C / 1920 °F max in dry air |
| Outokumpu Therma brochure | recommended up to 1000 °C / 1830 °F |
| Metalcor, 1.4818 | scaling resistance up to 1000 °C |
| AZoM | optimal performance 600–950 °C |

For quotation purposes 1000 °C is treated as the practical continuous ceiling in air.

In the Outokumpu Therma ranking, 153 MA takes four stars out of five for creep rupture strength and four
for structural stability — the latter above 253 MA, because it resists the embrittlement that affects
several austenitic heat resistant grades at 600–850 °C. On the 100 000 hour relative creep rupture curve
it sits below 253 MA and above 321H / 1.4878, 309S and 310S / 1.4845 over most of the range.

**Atmosphere limit.** The Metalcor datasheet for 1.4818 records low resistance to oxidizing sulphurous
gases. Outokumpu notes that low nickel grades resist sulphur induced high temperature corrosion better
than higher nickel grades, and that ferritic grades such as 1.4742 are preferred for sulphur bearing
atmospheres at low tensile load.

## 7. Applications

Furnace, heat treatment and high temperature process equipment. Outokumpu lists recuperators, conveyor
belts, expansion bellows, power generation components, cyclone dip tubes, bell and muffle furnaces,
automotive components, tube shields, valves and flanges, heat treatment trays and dampers. AZoM adds
cement plant equipment, hot air dryers, superheater tubes, fluidised beds, waste combustion and exhaust
gas preheating.

Forged shapes supplied:

| Shape | Typical duty |
| --- | --- |
| Seamless rolled rings | furnace rolls, kiln and recuperator assemblies |
| Forged flanges, valve bodies | hot gas and radiant tube service |
| Forged tube sheets | high temperature heat exchangers, recuperators |
| Forged discs, blanks, bushings | heat treatment fixtures, dampers |
| Forged shafts, spindles, round bars | furnace and conveyor mechanisms |
| Forged nozzles, sleeves | burners, hot gas ducting |

Above 1000 °C continuous, 253 MA / 1.4835 / S30815 is offered instead.

**Not for seawater or acid duty.** For seawater, firewater or subsea systems, duplex and super austenitic
grades such as A182 F51, F53, F55 and 904L apply.

---

## 8. Forging and heat treatment

Melting route is electric arc furnace with VOD refining, with ESR available for a tighter inclusion
rating or better transverse ductility. Hot working is in the 900–1150 °C window followed by rapid
cooling. Finished forgings are solution annealed at 1020–1100 °C and quenched. Rings are produced on a
radial axial ring rolling mill for circumferential grain flow; shafts, blocks and discs are open die
forged with the forging ratio recorded on the route card.

**Welding.** 153 MA solidifies in a ferritic mode, so weldability is comparable with the standard
chromium nickel austenitics. Outokumpu recommends 21 10 N wire for MAG welding and notes that a pulsed
power source may be needed. Metalcor lists 1.4835 as a suitable filler. Submerged arc, plasma arc, flux
cored and shielded metal arc welding are all usable, with argon plus 2–3 % hydrogen as the shielding gas
base. Welds should be full penetration, notch free and placed in low stress areas, since thermal fatigue
rather than static load usually governs.

| Further testing on request | PMI, liquid penetrant, tensile at ambient and elevated temperature, impact, grain size, intergranular corrosion, hardness survey |

EN 10228 part 3 covers ferritic and martensitic forgings; BS EN 10228-3:2016 refers austenitic and
austenitic ferritic stainless forgings to part 4. **EN 10228-4 is therefore the correct ultrasonic
acceptance standard for this grade.**

ASTM and ASME product specifications: S30415 coverage differs between plate, bar and forging
specifications. State the specification required on the enquiry; the specification an order can be
certified to is confirmed in writing before acceptance.
