Data to EN 10302:2008. Revised 27 September 2026.

1.4935 is the EN material number for X20CrMoWV12-1, a martensitic creep-resisting chromium steel
listed in EN 10302, the European standard covering creep resisting steels, nickel and cobalt alloys
in bar, rod and flat products. The grade runs 11.0 to 12.5 % chromium with additions of molybdenum,
tungsten and vanadium, which form carbides that resist coarsening at temperature. Nearest
counterparts abroad are AISI 422 and AISI 616 (UNS S42200) in the USA and SUH616 in Japan, although
their tungsten, carbon and nickel ranges differ. Continuous service is normally taken to about
580 C for creep and 600 C for scaling. Supply is quenched and tempered as +QT700 or +QT800. Main
work is steam and gas turbine blades, valve spindles and stems, rotor parts and hot bolting.

Creep-rupture strength: 275 MPa minimum for 100,000 h at 500 C. Use the creep-rupture and 1 % creep
limit tables of EN 10302 for design. The 580 C figure is a service guide, not a design allowable.

## Heat treatment

| Operation | Temperature |
| --- | --- |
| Austenitising and quenching | 1020 to 1070 C |
| Tempering | 680 to 780 C |

+QT700 comes from the upper tempering range, +QT800 from the lower. Ruling section, quench medium
and tempering temperature together decide the class that can be certified.

## Equivalent grades

### Composition comparison, % by mass

| Grade | C | Cr | Mo | Ni | V | W |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| EN 1.4935 X20CrMoWV12-1 | 0.17-0.24 | 11.0-12.5 | 0.80-1.20 | 0.30-0.80 | 0.20-0.35 | 0.40-0.60 |
| JIS SUH616 | 0.20-0.25 | 11.0-13.0 | 0.75-1.25 | 0.50-1.00 | 0.20-0.30 | 0.75-1.25 |
| AISI 422, UNS S42200 | 0.20-0.25 | 11.0-12.5 | 0.75-1.25 | 0.50-1.00 | 0.15-0.30 | 0.75-1.25 |

Tungsten is the clearest difference: EN 1.4935 caps it at 0.60 %, SUH616 and AISI 422 allow up to
1.25 %. Treat them as selection equivalents and name one ordering standard on the drawing.

1.4923 is a different grade. 1.4923 is X22CrMoV12-1 with no deliberate tungsten. 1.4935 is
X20CrMoWV12-1 with 0.40 to 0.60 % tungsten. The two numbers are often transposed on drawings.

## Common questions

**What is steel 1.4935?** The EN material number for X20CrMoWV12-1, a martensitic creep-resisting
chromium steel in EN 10302, used mainly for turbine blades, valve spindles and hot bolting.

**What is 1.4935 equivalent to?** AISI 422 and AISI 616 (UNS S42200), SUH616, and X22CrMoWV12-1 to
UNI 7500. Near-equivalents, not identical grades.

**Maximum service temperature?** About 580 C for creep and 600 C for scaling in continuous service.
Higher figures up to 650 C appear in some supplier literature.

**Is 1.4935 a stainless steel?** On the border. At 11.0 to 12.5 % chromium it can meet the
EN 10088-1 definition, but EN 10302 specifies it for hot strength and oxidation resistance rather
than corrosion resistance.

**Can 1.4935 be welded?** Not easily. Welding group 7.2 of ISO/TR 20172, needing preheat, interpass
control and post-weld heat treatment.

**Which delivery class?** +QT700 for ductility and toughness, +QT800 for strength. Check heavy
sections for through-hardening before specifying +QT800.
