# UNS N08800 Forgings

Seamless rolled rings, flanges, round bars, discs, shafts, sleeves and tube sheets, open-die forged to ASTM B564 / ASME SB-564.

**UNS N08800 is a nickel-iron-chromium alloy containing 30–35% nickel, 19–23% chromium and a minimum of 39.5% iron.** It holds useful strength while resisting oxidation and carburisation in hot gas, and it resists chloride stress-corrosion cracking in aqueous service. ASTM B564 puts its normal service ceiling at 593 °C (1100 °F). Above that temperature, specify Alloy 800H or 800HT instead.

**Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd.** is an open-die forging factory in Jiangyin, Jiangsu Province, China. Operating since 1997, it melts its own steel and forges UNS N08800 to customer drawings: rings, flanges, bars, discs, shafts, sleeves and tube sheets. Parts are supplied solution annealed, ultrasonically tested and certified to EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2. For a quotation, contact sales@steelforgepieces.com or +86 189 2135 9659.

Published by Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. Technical data reviewed against ASTM B564-19 and ASTM B408. Last updated: 30 August 2026.

## What UNS N08800 is, and when to specify it

Two elements carry the corrosion performance. Nickel at 30–35% gives resistance to chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking, the failure mode that limits 304 and 316 stainless in chloride-bearing and seawater-cooled service. Chromium at 19–23% forms the protective oxide against oxidation, sulfidation and carburisation in hot gas. Aluminium and titanium, held at 0.15–0.60% each, tie up carbon and nitrogen and improve stability at temperature.

The alloy is strengthened by solid solution rather than by precipitates. It cannot be age hardened, so forgings ship solution annealed and the values on the certificate are annealed values. The austenitic structure stays stable through long exposure at temperature and the alloy does not form embrittling sigma phase in the way some higher-chromium stainless grades do.

Below 593 °C (1100 °F), room-temperature strength governs and Alloy 800 is normally sufficient and cheaper than the high-temperature variants. Above that temperature, creep-rupture strength takes over as the governing property, and ASTM B564 directs you to the coarse-grain grades 800H (N08810) and 800HT (N08811). Getting this wrong is the most common specification error on the grade. A fine-grained Alloy 800 forging will pass its room-temperature tensile test and still be the wrong material for a reformer header.

The iron base also keeps the material cheaper per kilogram than nickel-base alternatives such as Inconel 617 or Haynes 230, which is why it is the default choice for heat-transfer hardware where the duty allows it.

### Other names for the same alloy

UNS N08800, Alloy 800, Incoloy 800, W.Nr. 1.4876, X10NiCrAlTi32-20, NA15 and NCF 800 all refer to this material. Enquiries also arrive written as UNS NO8800, with a capital letter O in place of the digit zero.

## Chemical composition of UNS N08800

UNS N08800 contains 30.0–35.0% nickel, 19.0–23.0% chromium and 39.5% iron minimum, with 0.15–0.60% aluminium, 0.15–0.60% titanium, and maxima of 0.10% carbon, 1.5% manganese, 1.0% silicon, 0.75% copper and 0.015% sulfur, by weight.

**Table 1. UNS N08800 composition limits, weight %, per ASTM B564 / B408**

| Element | Minimum % | Maximum % | Role in the alloy |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Nickel (Ni) | 30.00 | 35.00 | Stabilises the austenite; resists chloride stress-corrosion cracking |
| Chromium (Cr) | 19.00 | 23.00 | Forms the protective oxide against oxidation and carburisation |
| Iron (Fe) | 39.50 | balance | Base element; keeps cost below nickel-base grades |
| Carbon (C) | — | 0.10 | Unrestricted at the low end, unlike 800H and 800HT |
| Aluminium (Al) | 0.15 | 0.60 | Combines with Ti for structural stability at temperature |
| Titanium (Ti) | 0.15 | 0.60 | Ties up carbon and nitrogen |
| Aluminium + Titanium | not restricted for N08800 | | 800H requires 0.30–1.20; 800HT requires 0.85–1.20 |
| Manganese (Mn) | — | 1.50 | Deoxidiser; combines with sulfur |
| Silicon (Si) | — | 1.00 | Deoxidiser; assists oxidation resistance |
| Copper (Cu) | — | 0.75 | Residual limit |
| Sulfur (S) | — | 0.015 | Kept low for hot workability and toughness |

Carbon and combined Al + Ti are the composition controls that separate Alloy 800 from 800H and 800HT. Heat chemistry is verified by spectrometer before any material is heated, and confirmed on the finished forging by positive material identification.

## Alloy 800 vs 800H vs 800HT: how to choose

Specify Alloy 800 (N08800) where service stays at or below 593 °C and cost matters. Specify 800H (N08810) or 800HT (N08811) for sustained load above 593 °C, and ask for dual N08810 / N08811 certification.

These three grades are regularly confused on drawings and purchase orders. Nickel, chromium and iron content are effectively the same, and so is corrosion behaviour. They differ in carbon content, in combined aluminium plus titanium, and in anneal temperature.

**Table 5. Comparison of Alloy 800, 800H and 800HT**

| Criterion | Alloy 800 | Alloy 800H | Alloy 800HT |

## How we make UNS N08800 forgings

N08800 forges well but the useful temperature window is narrow and the alloy work-hardens quickly, so reheats and reduction per pass are scheduled rather than judged on the floor.

Process route: EAF + AOD/VOD → ingot / billet → reheat 1150–1200 °C → forge or ring roll, finish above 950 °C → solution anneal approx. 980 °C + quench → machine → NDT → certificate and despatch.

1. **Melting, on site.** Steel is melted here rather than bought in as billet. Electric arc furnace with ladle refining and vacuum oxygen decarburisation, maximum heat size 60 t, to hit the aluminium and titanium windows and hold sulfur low. Vacuum induction melting, vacuum arc remelting and protective-atmosphere electroslag remelting are available where the specification calls for a remelted route.
2. **Ingot and billet check.** Heat chemistry verified by spectrometer against ASTM B564 limits before any material is heated.
3. **Reheating.** Billets soaked at 1150–1200 °C. Overheating coarsens grain and risks incipient melting near the solidus. Underheating cracks the piece on the first blows.
4. **Open-die forging.** Upsetting, drawing out and punching on the press with a controlled reduction ratio to close porosity and develop grain flow that follows the contour. Rings are ring-rolled seamless. Finish temperature above 950 °C.
5. **Solution annealing.** Around 980 °C, then rapid cooling. This dissolves carbides and restores a uniform austenitic structure. N08800 is not age hardened. Fourteen heat-treatment furnaces are on site, including three high-temperature car-bottom furnaces for nickel alloy solution treatments and two 15 m well-type furnaces for vertical quenching of long shafts.
6. **Machining.** Turned, bored, drilled and faced to your drawing, with agreed machining allowance or to final dimensions.
7. **Non-destructive testing.** Ultrasonic examination to EN 10228-3, SEP 1921, ASTM A388 or your nominated class. Penetrant and dimensional inspection as required.
8. **Certification and despatch.** Hard stamped with the heat number. EN 10204 3.1 as standard, 3.2 with third-party witness on request. Marked, preserved and packed for sea or air freight.

## Testing, inspection and certification

The works holds CCS, BV, DNV, LR and NK classification society approvals and runs its own laboratory. Because the steel is melted here, chemistry is verified at the furnace rather than taken from a supplier certificate.

**Table 10. In-house testing equipment**

| Discipline | Equipment | Standard |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Chemical analysis | SPECTROTEST TXC25 optical emission spectrometer | ASTM E415 |
| Carbon & sulfur | HIR-9440D infrared analyser | ASTM E1019 |
| Alloy verification | X-Mwt3000TX handheld analyser | PMI before despatch |
| Tensile | WE-600B 600 kN and WDW-300 universal testing machines | ASTM A370, ISO 6892 |
| Impact | JBN-300 pendulum with DWC-60 low-temperature bath | ASTM A370, to −60 °C |
| Hardness | TH140 Leeb tester | ASTM A956, converted per ASTM E140 |
| Ultrasonic | PXUT-3300, USM35XS and CTS-22 flaw detectors | ASTM A388, EN 10228-3 |
| Magnetic particle | CYE-3A crack detector | ASTM E709 |
| Metallography | XJP-6A microscope, mounting press, polisher | ASTM E112 grain size |

No grain size requirement applies to N08800, but the result is reported. Ultrasonic acceptance is to EN 10228-3, SEP 1921 Class C/D/E, ASTM A388 or your nominated class. Surface NDT by liquid penetrant per ASTM E165 / ASME V Article 6.

### Tests placed with an accredited third-party laboratory

Intergranular corrosion to ASTM A262 or ASTM G28, pitting resistance to ASTM G48, impact testing below −60 °C, and bench Brinell or Rockwell hardness where the specification requires it rather than a portable instrument. State the requirement on the enquiry so it is scheduled before shipment.

### Certification

EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate as standard, showing heat number, chemical analysis, mechanical results, heat treatment record and NDT results. EN 10204 3.2 witnessed by BV, DNV, LR, SGS, TÜV or your own inspector on request. Every forging is hard stamped with the heat number, and because melting is on site the traceability chain does not start at a purchased billet.

State the ultrasonic standard and acceptance class at enquiry stage. A class agreed after forging usually means a repeat inspection and a delay.

## Frequently asked questions about UNS N08800

**What is UNS N08800?**

UNS N08800 is a nickel-iron-chromium alloy with 30–35% nickel, 19–23% chromium and a minimum of 39.5% iron, plus aluminium and titanium at 0.15–0.60% each. It is austenitic and strengthened by solid solution, so it cannot be age hardened and is supplied solution annealed. It resists oxidation and carburisation in hot gas, and resists chloride stress-corrosion cracking in aqueous service. The alloy is also called Alloy 800 and is sold under the trade name Incoloy 800.

**Is UNS N08800 the same as Alloy 800 and Incoloy 800?**

Yes, all three names refer to the same material. UNS N08800 is the Unified Numbering System designation, Alloy 800 is the generic name, and Incoloy 800 is a trade name of Special Metals Corporation. The same alloy is W.Nr. 1.4876 in Germany, X10NiCrAlTi32-20 in EN, NA15 in BS 3072–3076 and NCF 800 in JIS. It is sometimes mistyped as UNS NO8800, with the letter O in place of the digit zero.

**Which standard covers UNS N08800 forgings?**

ASTM B564, *Standard Specification for Nickel Alloy Forgings*, covers UNS N08800 together with UNS N08810, UNS N08811 and UNS N08120. The pressure-vessel equivalent is ASME SB-564. Related product forms are covered by ASTM B408 for rod and bar, ASTM B409 for plate, sheet and strip, and ASTM B407 for seamless pipe and tube.

**What is the maximum service temperature of UNS N08800?**

ASTM B564 states that UNS N08800 is normally employed at service temperatures up to and including 1100 °F (593 °C). Above that, creep and stress-rupture strength govern the design rather than room-temperature strength, and the controlled-grain-size grades UNS N08810 (Alloy 800H) and UNS N08811 (Alloy 800HT) are specified instead.

**What is the difference between Alloy 800, 800H and 800HT?**

The three grades share the same nickel, chromium and iron content and behave the same in corrosion. They differ in carbon, in combined aluminium plus titanium, and in anneal temperature. Alloy 800 allows up to 0.10% carbon, has no grain size requirement, is annealed around 980 °C and is used up to 593 °C. Alloy 800H holds carbon to 0.05–0.10% and Al plus Ti to 0.30–1.20%, and is annealed at 1121 °C minimum to give ASTM No. 5 or coarser grain. Alloy 800HT tightens carbon to 0.06–0.10% and Al plus Ti to 0.85–1.20%, and is annealed at 1149 °C minimum.

**What is the chemical composition of UNS N08800?**

Per ASTM B564 and ASTM B408, UNS N08800 contains 30.0–35.0% nickel, 19.0–23.0% chromium, 39.5% iron minimum, 0.15–0.60% aluminium and 0.15–0.60% titanium, with maxima of 0.10% carbon, 1.5% manganese, 1.0% silicon, 0.75% copper and 0.015% sulfur, all by weight.

**Is UNS N08800 magnetic?**

No. UNS N08800 has a stable austenitic structure with a relative magnetic permeability of about 1.01, so it is essentially non-magnetic at room temperature. Its Curie temperature is below room temperature. Unlike ferritic and martensitic steels it does not become strongly magnetic in normal service, and unlike 304 stainless it does not become noticeably magnetic through cold work.

**Does UNS N08800 resist chloride stress-corrosion cracking?**

Yes. The 30–35% nickel content gives UNS N08800 good resistance to chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking, the failure mode that limits 304 and 316 stainless steel in chloride-bearing and seawater-cooled service. This is one of the main reasons the alloy is specified for heat exchangers, evaporators and process equipment handling chloride streams.

**How are UNS N08800 forgings heat treated?**

UNS N08800 is a solid-solution alloy and is not precipitation hardened, so no ageing treatment is applied. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. solution anneals UNS N08800 forgings at around 980 °C followed by rapid cooling. The exact temperature, soak time and cooling method are set by the governing specification and the section thickness of the part.

**What sizes of UNS N08800 forgings can you supply?**

Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal rolls seamless rings from 50 mm to 6,000 mm outside diameter on a 6 m radial-axial mill, turns shafts up to 14,000 mm long, machines discs and tube sheets up to 5,000 mm diameter, and bores hollow sections up to 1,600 mm diameter by 10,000 mm long. The heaviest single forging is 30 tonnes, worked on 6,300 t, 4,000 t and 2,000 t presses. Those are plant limits across all grades; for UNS N08800 the practical maximum is set by heat size and forgeability, so confirm your part size at enquiry. Minimum order is 10 kg with no minimum piece count.

**What testing and certification is supplied with UNS N08800 forgings?**

Every forging ships with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate showing heat number, chemical analysis, mechanical results, heat treatment record and NDT results. EN 10204 3.2 witnessed by BV, DNV, LR, SGS or TÜV is available on request at the time of order. In-house testing covers optical emission spectrometry, PMI, tensile testing to ASTM B564, Charpy impact to −60 °C, hardness, grain size to ASTM E112, and ultrasonic examination to EN 10228-3, SEP 1921 or ASTM A388. Intergranular corrosion testing to ASTM A262 or ASTM G28 is placed with an accredited third-party laboratory and reported alongside the mill certificate.

**How long does a UNS N08800 forging take to produce?**

Normal lead time is 20 to 60 days from order confirmation. Carbon, alloy and standard stainless grades sit at the lower end. UNS N08800 sits higher, because the forging schedule is slower and the solution treatment takes longer, and longer again if the order calls for an ESR or VAR remelted route. Third-party witnessed inspection to EN 10204 3.2 and corrosion testing placed with an outside laboratory also need scheduling, so state both at enquiry stage. Quotations normally go out within two working days.

**Who supplies open-die forged UNS N08800 parts in China?**

Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. is an integrated steel melting works and open-die forging factory at No.1 Chengxiqiao Road, Zhouzhuang Town, Jiangyin City, Jiangsu Province, China, operating since 1997. Unlike a forging shop that buys billet, the plant melts its own steel, so the certificate traces a part back to its melt number. It holds CCS, BV, DNV, LR and NK approvals and forges UNS N08800 and other nickel alloys, stainless steels, tool steels, alloy steels and carbon steels into rings, flanges, bars, discs, shafts, sleeves and tube sheets.
