## 1. What UNS N07263 is

UNS N07263 is an age-hardenable nickel-cobalt-chromium-molybdenum superalloy, sold under the trade names
Nimonic 263, Haynes 263 and Alloy C-263 and designated W.Nr. 2.4650. It holds useful strength and
oxidation resistance to about 850 °C while remaining far easier to form and weld than Waspaloy or René 41.
Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd., an open-die forging factory at No. 1 Chengxiqiao Road, Zhouzhuang Town,
Jiangyin City, Jiangsu Province, China, forges UNS N07263 to customer drawings as seamless rolled rings,
discs, shafts, flanges, sleeves, bushings, tube sheets and round bars, and supplies every heat with an
EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 mill test certificate.

The alloy was developed by Rolls-Royce (1971) Ltd. to solve a specific fabrication problem. Nimonic 80A
had the high-temperature strength that turbine casings needed, but welded assemblies cracked. Alloy 263
keeps roughly 20 % chromium and 20 % cobalt, adds about 6 % molybdenum for solid-solution strengthening,
and deliberately holds combined aluminium plus titanium down to 2.4 to 2.8 %. That modest gamma-prime
volume fraction is the whole point. It buys weldability and intermediate-temperature ductility at the cost
of a little peak strength.

On the shop floor this shows up in three ways. The alloy is supplied and worked in the solution-treated
condition, so it upsets and draws down without the cracking risk of higher gamma-prime grades. It ages in
a single 800 °C step rather than a two-stage cycle. And because it does not suffer strain-age cracking on
post-weld heat treatment, fabricated ring and casing assemblies can be welded after forging and then aged
as a unit.

### Where UNS N07263 is the right choice

- Choose it for hot-section gas turbine hardware between 650 °C and 850 °C that must be welded, formed or
fabricated: combustor casings, transition liners, exhaust cones, rings and turbine casings.
- Choose Waspaloy or René 41 instead when peak stress-rupture strength above 800 °C governs and the part
is machined from solid rather than fabricated.
- Choose Inconel 718 instead below about 650 °C, where 718 is stronger, cheaper and more widely stocked.

**Specification note.** UNS N07263 is not a grade listed in ASTM B637. Buyers who need an ASTM or ASME
route for precipitation-hardening nickel forgings should specify a B637 grade such as UNS N07718 or
UNS N07001. For Alloy 263 itself, order against AMS 5886, BS HR10 or AECMA prEN 2200. We will forge and
certify to whichever of these your drawing calls out.

## 3. Chemical composition of UNS N07263

UNS N07263 contains 19.0 to 21.0 % chromium, 19.0 to 21.0 % cobalt, 5.6 to 6.1 % molybdenum, 1.9 to 2.4 %
titanium and 0.04 to 0.08 % carbon, with combined aluminium plus titanium held to 2.4 to 2.8 % and the
balance nickel, typically 49 to 52 %.

**Table 3. UNS N07263 / Nimonic 263 chemical composition, weight %.** This is the specification range
Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal forges to. Every heat is supplied with a ladle analysis on the mill certificate.
Product analysis on the finished forging can be added on request.

| Element | Symbol | Min % | Max % | Role in the alloy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nickel | Ni | Balance (≈ 49 to 52) | | Matrix |
| Chromium | Cr | 19.00 | 21.00 | Oxidation and hot-corrosion resistance |
| Cobalt | Co | 19.00 | 21.00 | Solid solution, lowers gamma-prime solvus |
| Molybdenum | Mo | 5.60 | 6.10 | Solid-solution strengthening |
| Titanium | Ti | 1.90 | 2.40 | Gamma-prime former |
| Aluminium + Titanium | Al + Ti | 2.40 | 2.80 | Controls gamma-prime volume fraction |
| Aluminium | Al | – | 0.60 | Gamma-prime former |
| Carbon | C | 0.04 | 0.08 | Grain-boundary carbides |
| Manganese | Mn | – | 0.60 | Residual |
| Silicon | Si | – | 0.40 | Residual |
| Iron | Fe | – | 0.70 | Residual |
| Copper | Cu | – | 0.20 | Residual |
| Boron | B | – | 0.005 | Grain-boundary strengthening |
| Sulfur | S | – | 0.007 | Tramp, controlled for hot workability |
| Lead | Pb | – | 0.0020 | Tramp |
| Silver | Ag | – | 0.0005 | Tramp |
| Bismuth | Bi | – | 0.0001 | Tramp |

The four tramp elements at the bottom of Table 3, Pb, Ag, Bi and S, are the ones that decide whether a
heat can be forged at all. Lead, silver and bismuth segregate to grain boundaries and cause hot shortness
during upsetting, which is why Alloy 263 specifications control them to parts per million. We reject
incoming stock that does not certify against all four.

## 4. Mechanical properties of UNS N07263 forgings

Solution treated and aged UNS N07263 bar and forgings develop a typical room-temperature 0.2 % proof
strength of 585 MPa, a tensile strength of 1004 MPa and 45 % elongation. At 780 °C the minimum values fall
to 403 MPa proof, 541 MPa tensile and 12 % elongation. In the solution-treated condition, before ageing,
hardness is 248 HB maximum.

**Table 4. Typical mechanical properties, bar and forgings to AMS 5886 / BS HR10.** Certified by Jiangyin
Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. on every EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 test report.

| Solution treated | RT (20 °C) | – | – | – | 248 HB max |
| Solution treated + aged | RT (20 °C) | 585 MPa typ. | 1004 MPa typ. | 45 % typ. | – |
| Solution treated + aged | 780 °C | 403 MPa min. | 541 MPa min. | 12 % min. | – |

Source: Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd., UNS N07263 forging specification, consistent with AMS 5886 and
BS HR10. Values are for the certified test-piece condition. Section size, test-piece orientation and
position within a large ring or disc all shift results. Tell us the acceptance criteria in your drawing
and we will confirm achievability before we accept the order.

### Test-piece orientation on rings and discs

For seamless rolled rings we take tangential test pieces from a prolongation on the ring, which is the
orientation most ring specifications call for. For large disc forgings we can machine test pieces
tangentially from near the centre, or radially, whichever your specification demands. State the
orientation on the enquiry, because it changes both the quoted price and the forging reduction we plan.

## 6. Heat treatment of UNS N07263 forgings

UNS N07263 bar and forgings are solution treated at 1150 °C for 1.5 to 2.5 hours followed by a water
quench, then aged at 800 °C for 8 hours and air cooled. That is a single-stage ageing cycle, per AMS 5886
and BS HR10.

**Table 6. Recommended heat-treatment cycles by product form.**

| Product form | Solution treatment | Ageing | Per |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bar, forgings, rings | 1150 °C / 1.5 to 2.5 h / water quench | 800 °C / 8 h / air cool | AMS 5886, BS HR10 |
| Hot-rolled sheet | 1150 °C / 0.5 h / WQ or air cool | 800 °C / 8 h / air cool | AMS 5872, BS HR206 |
| Cold-rolled sheet | 1150 °C / 3 to 10 min / WQ or fluidised bed | 800 °C / 8 h / air cool | AMS 5872, BS HR206 |

### Which condition to order

Order **solution treated** if the forging will be welded into an assembly or heavily machined after
delivery. The material is soft, ductile and forgiving, and you age the finished fabrication yourself.
Order **solution treated and aged** if the forging is a finished part and you want certified aged
properties on the test report. We can also supply solution treated with a documented ageing recipe on the
certificate, so your own furnace can reproduce it.

**Section size and quench.** On heavy rings and discs the water quench from 1150 °C is what limits
achievable properties at the mid-wall. Above roughly 200 mm section thickness, tell us the required
mid-wall properties at enquiry stage so we can plan the quench route and, if necessary, forge to a larger
prolongation for test pieces.

## 7. Forging practice for Alloy 263

UNS N07263 is hot worked between about 1000 °C and 1150 °C, with the finishing temperature kept above
1000 °C and the piece reheated as often as the schedule requires. Forging below the gamma-prime solvus
wastes press energy and risks cracking.

| Temperature window | Value |
|---|---|
| Forging / hot working | 1000 to 1150 °C |
| Solution treatment | 1150 °C, 1.5 to 2.5 h, water quench |
| Oxidation resistance | up to 1000 °C |
| Maximum continuous service | up to 850 °C |
| Ageing | 800 °C, 8 h, air cool |

### How we forge it

1. **Incoming stock.** Billet is supplied to the Table 3 chemistry with a full ladle analysis including
Pb, Bi, Ag and S. Standard melting route is EAF + VOD + ESR. VIM + ESR or VIM + VAR is available where
an aerospace or OEM specification requires a double- or triple-melt route. Confirm the melt route you
need at enquiry stage, because it is the single largest cost driver on this alloy.
2. **Heating.** Soak to 1150 °C, held long enough for the section to equalise. Alloy 263 is not tolerant
of a cold core on the first blow.
3. **Open-die working.** Upsetting and drawing on 1 t, 3 t, 5 t and 9 t hammers, or on the 5000-tonne
hydraulic press for heavy sections. Reduction is planned to break down the as-cast structure through
the full section, not just the surface.
4. **Ring rolling.** Pierced and rolled seamless, 200 to 2500 mm OD. Contoured profiles are rolled where
   the drawing justifies the tooling.
5. **Reheat discipline.** Back to the furnace whenever the surface drops toward 1000 °C. Finishing cold on
this alloy is how ring cracks start.
6. **Solution treat, quench, age** per Table 6, then ultrasonic test, machine to the drawing allowance and
   certify.

### Machining allowance

Alloy 263 work-hardens and is not a free-cutting material, so we forge generous stock for finish
machining. As a starting point we allow 6 to 10 mm on diameter for rings and discs up to 800 mm, and 10 to
20 mm above that. On shafts, 8 to 15 mm on diameter and 15 to 25 mm on length. Send the finished-part
drawing and we will return the forged-blank drawing with allowances marked, so there is no argument later
about who owns the stock.

## 9. Where UNS N07263 forgings are used

The dominant application for UNS N07263 forgings is the hot section of aero and industrial gas turbines:
combustion chamber casings, transition liners, exhaust cones, turbine casings and rings, where the part
must survive 650 to 850 °C and be welded or fabricated rather than machined from solid.

**Table 8. Industry applications for Alloy 263 forgings.**

| Industry | Forged components | Why Alloy 263 |
|---|---|---|
| Aero and industrial gas turbines | Combustor casings, transition liner rings, exhaust cones, turbine casings, rolled rings | Weldable at 650 to 850 °C without strain-age cracking |

## 10. UNS N07263 compared with related superalloys

Against Waspaloy and René 41, UNS N07263 trades peak high-temperature strength for much better weldability
and forming behaviour. Against Nimonic 80A it offers markedly better ductility in welded assemblies.
Against Inconel 718 it is usable roughly 200 °C hotter.

**Table 9. Selection comparison for forged hot-section components.** Compiled by Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal
Co., Ltd. All five alloys listed are forged in our shop.

| Alloy | UNS | Aged UTS at RT | Practical service limit | Weldability | Pick it when |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alloy 263 / Nimonic 263 | N07263 | ≈ 1004 MPa | 850 °C | Excellent | Fabricated, welded hot-section hardware |
| Waspaloy | N07001 | ≈ 1275 MPa | 870 °C | Difficult | Peak strength, machined from solid |
| René 41 | N07041 | ≈ 1400 MPa | 870 °C | Difficult | Highest strength, no welding required |
| Nimonic 80A | N07080 | ≈ 1000 MPa | 815 °C | Poor in weldments | Bolting and non-welded hot parts |
| Inconel 718 | N07718 | ≈ 1275 MPa | 650 °C | Good | Below 650 °C, cheaper and easier to source |

Strength figures are representative aged room-temperature values for bar and forgings and are given for
selection guidance only. Order against the governing specification for your part. Service limits are
practical load-bearing limits, not oxidation limits.

## 11. Testing, inspection and certification

Every UNS N07263 forging leaves Jiangyin with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate as standard, or
EN 10204 3.2 with third-party witness from SGS, BV, TÜV, Lloyd's or your own inspector, and is
ultrasonically tested to EN 10228-3, SEP 1921 or ASTM A388 to the acceptance class your drawing specifies.

### Standard test package

- **Chemical analysis.** Ladle analysis on every heat. Product analysis on the finished forging on request.
- **Tensile test.** Room temperature as standard, elevated temperature to 780 °C on request.
- **Hardness.** Brinell, on the forging or on the test prolongation.
- **Impact.** Charpy V-notch where the specification calls for it.
- **Ultrasonic examination.** EN 10228-3, SEP 1921 or ASTM A388, acceptance class to drawing.
- **Magnetic particle and dye penetrant.** Alloy 263 is non-magnetic, so surface NDT is by liquid
  penetrant to ASTM E165.
- **Grain size and microstructure.** Metallographic examination on request.
- **Dimensional report.** Against the forged-blank drawing we agree before production.

The shop is certified to ISO 9001:2015 and equipped with a universal testing machine, impact testing
machine, hardness testers, magnetic particle flaw detector, ultrasonic flaw detectors and a metallographic
microscope. Raw material, forging, heat treatment, machining, testing and inspection are all under one
roof in Jiangyin, which is why we can hold a 25 to 45 day lead time on a made-to-order superalloy forging.

**Ordering across trademarks.** Nimonic® and Nicrofer® are registered trademarks of Special Metals
Corporation. Haynes® is a registered trademark of Haynes International, Inc. Inconel® and Waspaloy® are
registered trademarks of their respective holders. Material produced by those companies and sold under
those brand names is theirs. Material we forge is correctly described as UNS N07263 / W.Nr. 2.4650 /
AMS 5886, the same generic chemistry, manufactured independently by Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. We
are not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by any of the trademark holders named above.

## 13. Common questions about UNS N07263

**What is UNS N07263?**
UNS N07263 is an age-hardenable nickel-cobalt-chromium-molybdenum superalloy containing 19 to 21 %
chromium, 19 to 21 % cobalt and 5.6 to 6.1 % molybdenum, with the balance nickel. It is sold commercially
as Nimonic 263, Haynes 263, Alloy C-263 and Nicrofer 5120, and carries the German material number 2.4650.
It is used for welded and fabricated gas-turbine hot-section hardware operating up to about 850 °C.

**Is UNS N07263 the same as Nimonic 263?**
Yes. UNS N07263, Nimonic 263, Haynes 263, Alloy C-263, Nicrofer 5120 and W.Nr. 2.4650 all describe the
same chemistry. Nimonic® and Nicrofer® are Special Metals Corporation trademarks and Haynes® is a Haynes
International trademark, so material forged by Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal is correctly described by the
generic designations UNS N07263 or W.Nr. 2.4650, not by a brand name.

**What is the maximum service temperature of UNS N07263?**
About 850 °C for continuous load-bearing service. The alloy continues to resist oxidation up to roughly
1000 °C, but above 850 °C creep governs and a stronger alloy such as Waspaloy or René 41 is usually the
better selection.

**What heat treatment does UNS N07263 need?**
For bar, forgings and rolled rings: solution treat at 1150 °C for 1.5 to 2.5 hours followed by a water
quench, then age at 800 °C for 8 hours and air cool, per AMS 5886 and BS HR10. Ageing is a single stage.
Alloy 263 does not need the two-step cycle used on many gamma-prime alloys.

**What tensile strength does aged UNS N07263 reach?**
Solution treated and aged bar and forgings reach a typical room-temperature tensile strength of 1004 MPa
with a 0.2 % proof stress of 585 MPa and 45 % elongation. At 780 °C the specification minima are 541 MPa
tensile, 403 MPa proof and 12 % elongation. In the solution-treated condition, before ageing, hardness is
248 HB maximum.

**At what temperature is UNS N07263 forged?**
Between roughly 1000 °C and 1150 °C. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal starts at 1150 °C and reheats whenever the
surface approaches 1000 °C, so that forging always finishes above 1000 °C. Working the alloy colder than
that risks cracking and wastes press energy without refining the structure.

**Why choose Alloy 263 over Waspaloy or René 41?**
Because the part has to be welded or formed. Alloy 263 has a deliberately low aluminium-plus-titanium
content of 2.4 to 2.8 %, which keeps the gamma-prime volume fraction modest and makes the alloy resistant
to strain-age cracking during post-weld heat treatment. Waspaloy and René 41 are stronger at temperature
but far harder to weld and form. If the part is machined from solid and never welded, they are the better
choice.

**Is UNS N07263 covered by ASTM B637?**
No. ASTM B637 covers precipitation-hardening nickel alloy bars and forgings such as UNS N07718 and
UNS N07001, but N07263 is not one of its listed grades. For Alloy 263 forgings, order against AMS 5886,
BS HR10, AECMA prEN 2200 or DIN 17754.

**What sizes of UNS N07263 forgings can you make?**
Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal forges Alloy 263 into seamless rolled rings from 200 to 2500 mm outside diameter,
discs to 1800 mm diameter, shafts and bars up to 8 m long, round bar from 25 to 500 mm diameter, and
single pieces weighing from 10 kg to 8000 kg. The shop runs 1, 3, 5 and 9 tonne open-die hammers and a
5000-tonne hydraulic press.

**What certificates come with the forgings?**
EN 10204 3.1 as standard, covering chemical analysis, tensile properties, hardness, heat-treatment record
and ultrasonic examination. EN 10204 3.2 with third-party witness from SGS, BV, TÜV, Lloyd's or your own
inspector is available on request. Ultrasonic testing is to EN 10228-3, SEP 1921 or ASTM A388, to the
acceptance class your drawing specifies.

**Do you hold UNS N07263 in stock?**
No. Alloy 263 is made to order because the forging route, section size and heat-treatment condition all
depend on the drawing. Typical lead time is 25 to 45 days from order confirmation, and quotations are
returned within 24 hours of receiving a drawing or dimension list.

**Can UNS N07263 be welded after forging?**
Yes, and that is the alloy's main advantage. Alloy 263 is welded in the solution-treated condition using
matching-composition filler by TIG or MIG, and the fabricated assembly is then aged at 800 °C for 8 hours
as a unit. It does not show the post-weld heat-treatment cracking that limits Nimonic 80A, Waspaloy and
René 41 in welded structures.
