## 2. Designations and cross-reference

Buyers meet this alloy under at least six names, and that causes ordering errors. NiMo16Cr15W, 2.4819, UNS N10276 and Alloy C-276 all describe the same chemistry. Hastelloy is a registered trade mark of Haynes International. On a purchase order, give the standard and the grade number rather than the trade name, so that any qualified mill can supply.

| S | | 0.010 | DIN 17744. ASTM B574 allows 0.030 max |

**Watch the tungsten row.** A copying error carried by a number of older datasheets puts "Cu 3-4.5" where tungsten belongs. Copper is not a specified element in NiMo16Cr15W. The W in the designation is tungsten, at 3.00 to 4.50 per cent. If a mill certificate reports copper in that range, query it before you accept the material.

### Melting route

Our NiMo16Cr15W stock is melted by EAF with AOD or VOD refining. Electroslag remelting is added where the enquiry calls for better cleanliness, less segregation and a tighter ultrasonic acceptance class on heavy sections.

## 5. Forging practice and heat treatment

NiMo16Cr15W is more sensitive to strain and strain rate than austenitic stainless steel and its hot-working window is narrow. Forging discipline therefore decides whether the finished part keeps its corrosion resistance.

### Table 5.1 Thermal processing of NiMo16Cr15W forgings

| Operation | Parameter |
|---|---|
| Hot forging, start | About 1230 C (2250 F) |
| Hot forging, finish | 950 C (1750 F) minimum |
| Reduction practice | Moderate reductions, frequent reheating |
| Solution anneal | 1120 to 1160 C, hold 10 to 30 min by section |
| Quench | Rapid water quench. Air cooling only below about 10 mm section |
| Ageing | Not applicable. The alloy is not age hardenable |
| Stress relief | Not effective. A full solution anneal is used instead |

**Do not age or slow cool.** Between roughly 650 and 1050 C this alloy precipitates mu phase and M6C carbides at the grain boundaries. That costs ductility and, more to the point, opens the material to intergranular attack. A specification calling for solution treatment plus ageing on 2.4819 is in error. Every forging is re-annealed after the last hot-work operation and quenched fast through this range.

### Machining and welding

The alloy work hardens readily. Machine with rigid set-ups, positive rake carbide tooling and a heavy constant feed, and do not let the tool dwell. Welding is by GTAW, GMAW or SMAW with matching ERNiCrMo-4 and ENiCrMo-4 consumables at low heat input. Because the carbon content is low, the weld heat-affected zone normally stays free of grain-boundary carbides, so many assemblies go into service as welded.

## 9. NiMo16Cr15W compared with the alternatives

Specifying C-276 out of habit is common, and sometimes expensive. The table sets out how the nickel corrosion-resistant grades divide up.

### Table 9.1 Selection guide for nickel corrosion-resistant alloys

| Alloy | UNS / W.Nr. | Cr | Mo | W | PREN | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NiMo16Cr15W (C-276) | N10276 / 2.4819 | 15.5 | 16 | 3.75 | ~74 | Mixed and reducing media, wet chlorine, hypochlorite, seawater, sour service |
| Alloy C-22 | N06022 / 2.4602 | 21 | 13.5 | 3 | ~70 | Strongly oxidising duty, hot nitric, FGD. Better weld HAZ stability |
| Alloy C-4 | N06455 / 2.4610 | 16 | 15.5 | | ~67 | Long exposure at 650 to 1040 C where sensitisation is the risk |
| Alloy 625 | N06625 / 2.4856 | 21.5 | 9 | | ~51 | Higher strength, seawater, elevated temperature. Lower cost |
| Alloy B-2 and B-3 | N10665 / 2.4617 | | 28 | | n/a | Pure reducing duty, hydrochloric acid. Fails in oxidising media |

PREN is the tungsten-corrected pitting resistance equivalent number, Cr + 3.3(Mo + 0.5W). It ranks resistance to pitting and crevice attack in chloride service. It says nothing about behaviour in oxidising acids, where chromium content decides the outcome.

## 11. Frequently asked questions

**What is NiMo16Cr15W?**
NiMo16Cr15W is the EN and DIN name for a low-carbon nickel-molybdenum-chromium-tungsten corrosion-resistant alloy, material number 2.4819, UNS N10276. It carries about 15 to 17 per cent molybdenum, 14.5 to 16.5 per cent chromium, 3 to 4.5 per cent tungsten and 4 to 7 per cent iron, nickel balance, with carbon held to 0.010 per cent maximum. It is a solid-solution alloy used where both oxidising and reducing media occur, and it is one of the few materials that stands up to wet chlorine gas, hypochlorite and chlorine dioxide.

**Is NiMo16Cr15W the same as Hastelloy C-276?**
Yes, the same alloy under different naming systems. NiMo16Cr15W is the European designation, W.Nr. 2.4819. UNS N10276 is the North American number. Hastelloy C-276 is Haynes International's trade name. Other mill names for the identical chemistry include Alloy C-276, Nicrofer 5716 hMoW and VDM Alloy C-276. On a purchase order, give the standard and grade number rather than the trade name.

**What is the chemical composition of NiMo16Cr15W (2.4819)?**
Per DIN 17744: C 0.010 max, Si 0.08 max, Mn 1.00 max, P 0.025 max, S 0.010 max, Cr 14.50 to 16.50, Mo 15.00 to 17.00, W 3.00 to 4.50, Fe 4.00 to 7.00, Co 2.50 max, V 0.35 max, Ni balance at roughly 51 to 63 per cent. The tungsten range is often mis-typed as copper on older datasheets. Copper is not a specified element in this grade.

**Can NiMo16Cr15W be age hardened?**
No. It is a solid-solution alloy and cannot be strengthened by precipitation hardening. Holding it around 650 to 1050 C precipitates mu phase and M6C carbides at the grain boundaries, cutting ductility and corrosion resistance. The only correct final treatment is solution annealing at about 1120 to 1160 C followed by a rapid water quench. Strength can be raised only by cold work, which is rarely appropriate for corrosion-service forgings. Stress-relief treatments are not effective, so a full solution anneal is used instead.

**What are the correct forging and annealing temperatures?**
Hot working starts at about 1230 C and must finish above about 950 C. The window is narrower than for austenitic stainless steel, so moderate reductions with frequent reheating give the best result. After all hot work the forging is solution annealed at about 1120 to 1160 C, held 10 to 30 minutes by section thickness, and water quenched fast through the precipitation range.

**Which standards cover NiMo16Cr15W forgings?**
Composition: DIN 17744. Bar: DIN 17752 and ASTM B574. Forgings: ASTM B564 and ASME SB-564. Forged or rolled flanges and fittings: ASTM B462. European pressure equipment: VdTUV WB 400. Sour service: NACE MR0175 with ISO 15156-3, and NACE MR0103 with ISO 17945. Ultrasonic acceptance is normally specified to EN 10228-3, SEP 1921 or ASTM A388.

**NiMo16Cr15W or Alloy C-22, which should I specify?**
Use NiMo16Cr15W, that is C-276, for predominantly reducing or mixed service: hydrochloric and sulphuric acid, wet chlorine, hypochlorite, seawater, sour gas. Use Alloy C-22, UNS N06022 and W.Nr. 2.4602, for strongly oxidising service such as hot nitric acid, oxidising chloride solutions and flue-gas desulphurisation, where its 20 to 22.5 per cent chromium performs better and the weld heat-affected zone holds up better. Both forge and anneal the same way.

**Is NiMo16Cr15W acceptable for sour service under NACE MR0175?**
Yes. UNS N10276 is listed in NACE MR0175 and ISO 15156-3 in the solution-annealed condition, normally limited to 22 HRC maximum. Cold-worked material carries separate, tighter limits. Check the temperature, H2S partial pressure and chloride limits for your specific environment against the current edition before ordering.

**What sizes and shapes can be forged?**
Seamless rolled rings, discs and blanks, shafts and spindles, flanges, sleeves and bushings, hollow bar, tube sheets, valve bodies and stems, nozzles and forged pipe sections. Typical range is 5 to 8,000 kg finished weight, ring outside diameter 120 to 3,000 mm and bar diameter 20 to 800 mm. Single pieces are accepted.

**Who supplies NiMo16Cr15W open-die forgings in China?**

On request: ultrasonic testing to EN 10228-3, SEP 1921 or ASTM A388, penetrant testing to ASTM E165, ASTM G28 method A intergranular corrosion testing, positive material identification, impact testing, grain size, and EN 10204 3.2 third-party certification witnessed by TUV, SGS, BV or Lloyd's.

**How long does an order take?**
Quotation normally goes back within one working day. Production lead time for NiMo16Cr15W forgings runs 25 to 40 days from drawing approval, depending on section size, machining scope and third-party inspection requirements.
