## What is NC22FeD?

NC22FeD is a wrought nickel-base superalloy specified under the French AFNOR system. The letters follow the AFNOR convention: N for nickel, C22 for roughly 22 % chromium, Fe for the iron addition, D for molybdenum (molybdène). American, German, Chinese and trade specifications call the same material UNS N06002, W.Nr. 2.4665, GH3536 and Hastelloy X.

Strength at temperature comes from solid solution hardening. Molybdenum at 8 to 10 %, cobalt at 0.5 to 2.5 % and tungsten at 0.2 to 1.0 % stiffen a nickel matrix that carries 20.5 to 23 % chromium for oxidation resistance and 17 to 20 % iron. There is no gamma prime or gamma double prime precipitate, which is why the alloy keeps its ductility after long exposure. Published data show good residual elongation after 16,000 hours at 650, 760 and 870 °C.

**Specification note.** NC22FeD cannot be strengthened by a solution plus ageing cycle. It is a solid solution alloy and ships solution annealed only. A drawing that calls for solution treated and aged NC22FeD is usually meant for a precipitation hardening grade such as Inconel 718 or Incoloy 925. Send us the drawing and we will raise it before material is cut.

## How we forge NC22FeD

NC22FeD is stiff, work hardens quickly and has a narrow hot working window, so process control matters more than press size. This is the route we run in Jiangyin.

1. **Melting: EAF plus VOD, then ESR remelt.** Electroslag remelting lowers sulphur and oxide inclusion counts and gives the directional solidification structure the alloy needs before it reaches the press. VIM plus ESR is available where aerospace cleanliness is specified.
2. **Homogenising and cogging.** The ingot soaks at 1,175 to 1,200 °C until the full section reaches temperature, which this alloy requires, then it is cogged on the hydraulic press.
3. **Open-die forging, 1,215 °C down to 900 °C.** Forging finishes above roughly 900 °C to avoid cracking. Several reheats are normal. We plan the pass schedule for a 4:1 minimum forging ratio and record every heat cycle.
4. **Ring rolling.** Rings are punched and rolled seamless on our 3 m and 6 m mills, which gives circumferential grain flow that a ring machined from plate cannot match.
5. **Solution anneal at 1,150 to 1,177 °C, then rapid cool.** Water quench or forced air, chosen by section thickness. This is the only heat treatment the alloy takes. It dissolves carbides and restores ductility and corrosion resistance. Furnace charts go out with the certificate.
6. **Machining.** Rough or finish turned, bored and faced to drawing. Carbide tooling at 40 to 80 SFM. The alloy cuts more easily than Inconel 718 but work hardens if the tool rubs.
7. **Testing.** Ultrasonic to EN 10228-3, SEP 1921 or ASTM A388. Dye penetrant to ASTM E165. Tensile to ASTM E8 or ISO 6892-1. Grain size to ASTM E112. Intergranular corrosion to ASTM G28 on request.
8. **Certification, marking and packing.** EN 10204 3.1 as standard, 3.2 with TÜV, BV, SGS or Lloyd's witness. Parts are hard stamped with heat number and part number, VCI wrapped and crated for sea or air freight.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is NC22FeD equivalent to?

NC22FeD is equivalent to UNS N06002, W.Nr. 2.4665 (NiCr22Fe18Mo), Alloy X, Hastelloy X and Chinese grade GH3536 or GH536. All of these describe the same nickel-chromium-iron-molybdenum chemistry. Composition limits and mechanical minimums differ slightly between AMS, ASTM and EN specifications, so state the exact standard and revision on your order.

### Is NC22FeD the same as Hastelloy X?

Yes. NC22FeD is the French AFNOR name for the alloy sold under the Hastelloy X trade name. Hastelloy is a registered trademark of Haynes International, Inc. Material forged by Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal to the UNS N06002 chemistry is certified as NC22FeD, UNS N06002 or 2.4665, not as branded Hastelloy material.

### Can NC22FeD be hardened by heat treatment?

No. NC22FeD is solid-solution strengthened and cannot be hardened by precipitation ageing or by quench and temper. The only heat treatment applied is a solution anneal at 1,150 to 1,177 °C followed by rapid cooling. The alloy can be hardened by cold work, but cold-worked parts must be re-annealed to restore ductility and corrosion resistance.

### What is the maximum service temperature of NC22FeD?

NC22FeD resists oxidation up to about 1,200 °C (2,200 °F), while useful creep strength for load-bearing parts is usually limited to around 900 °C. The two limits are different. Scale resistance runs higher than load-carrying capacity, so above roughly 900 °C the alloy is normally used for lightly stressed hardware such as furnace fixtures, retorts and rolls.

### Which standards cover NC22FeD forgings?

Forgings are usually ordered to ASTM B564 or ASME SB-564, bar and shaft stock to ASTM B572 or ASME SB-572, and aerospace bar, forgings and rings to AMS 5754. Plate and sheet fall under ASTM B435 and AMS 5536. Pressure-vessel construction uses ASME BPVC Section VIII Division 1, with allowable stresses from Section II Part D.

### What NDT and certification are supplied with NC22FeD forgings?

Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal supplies ultrasonic testing to EN 10228-3, SEP 1921 or ASTM A388, dye penetrant to ASTM E165, and an EN 10204 3.1 certificate as standard. EN 10204 3.2 certificates witnessed by TÜV, BV, SGS or Lloyd's are available on request.

### What is the minimum order quantity and lead time?

There is no minimum quantity. Single pieces and prototypes are accepted, and typical lead time is 25 to 45 days depending on section size, machining scope and whether the heat has to be melted to order. Quotations are returned within 24 hours on working days.

### Who forges NC22FeD in China?

Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd., an open-die forging factory at No.1 Chengxiqiao Road, Zhouzhuang Town, Jiangyin City, Jiangsu Province, China, forges NC22FeD (UNS N06002) into rings, discs, shafts, flanges, sleeves and tube sheets to customer drawings. The plant has run since 2008 under ISO 9001:2015, with 1 t to 9 t open-die hammers, a 4,500-tonne hydraulic press and 3 m and 6 m ring-rolling mills. Enquiries go to sales@steelforgepieces.com or +86 189 2135 9659.

### How do I convert an NC22FeD drawing into a forged weight?

Multiply the finished volume by the density of 8.22 g/cm3, then add machining allowance on every surface. As a rule of thumb, allow 5 to 8 mm per surface on rough-machined rings and discs under 1,000 mm, and 10 to 15 mm above that.
