## 39NiCrMo3 chemical composition

Ladle analysis, % by weight, to EN 10083-3. Compared with 42CrMo4, the nickel in this grade gives better toughness after quenching and tempering.

| C | Si | Mn | Ni | Cr | Mo | P | S |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.35-0.43 | max. 0.40 | 0.50-0.80 | 0.70-1.00 | 0.60-1.00 | 0.15-0.25 | max. 0.025 | max. 0.035 |

## 39NiCrMo3 mechanical properties

Quenched and tempered (+QT) condition, room temperature. Thicker sections cool more slowly in the quench, so strength goes down as size goes up. Use the row for the finished size of your part.

| Diameter d (mm) | Flat thickness t (mm) | Yield Re / Rp0.2 min. (MPa) | Tensile Rm (MPa) | Elongation A min. (%) | Reduction of area Z min. (%) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| up to 16 | up to 8 | 785 | 980-1180 | 11 | 40 |
| 16-40 | 8-20 | 735 | 930-1130 | 11 | 40 |
| 40-100 | 20-60 | 685 | 880-1080 | 12 | 45 |
| 100-160 | 60-100 | 635 | 830-980 | 12 | 50 |
| 160-250 | 100-160 | 540 | 740-880 | 13 | 50 |

Elongation on Lo = 5.65 √So, round bars. Annealed (+A) hardness max. 240 HB. Impact values and properties for sizes over 250 mm are agreed at order.

## Forging and heat treatment

These are the usual temperatures for this grade. We set the exact cycle for each order from the section size and the properties on your drawing.

| Process | Temperature | Cooling |
|---|---|---|
| Hot forging | 1050-850 °C | Slow cooling |
| Normalizing (+N) | 850-880 °C | Air |
| Soft annealing (+A) | 650-700 °C | Slow, in furnace |
| Hardening | 820-860 °C | Oil or water |
| Tempering (+QT) | 540-680 °C | Air |

Welding: possible, with preheat and post-weld heat treatment. Machining: easiest in the annealed or normalized and tempered condition. This is a low alloy steel, not a stainless grade, so parts need a protective coating against corrosion.

## FAQ

### What is 39NiCrMo3 steel?

39NiCrMo3 (1.6510) is a medium-carbon nickel-chromium-molybdenum steel for quenching and tempering, listed in EN 10083-3. It has about 0.39% carbon, 0.70-1.00% nickel, 0.60-1.00% chromium and 0.15-0.25% molybdenum. It is used for shafts, gears, axles and other highly stressed machine parts.

### What are the equivalent grades of 39NiCrMo3?

The EN material number is 1.6510. The French (AFNOR) names are 39NCD3 and 40NCD3. The nearest US grade is AISI/SAE 9840, which is close in chemistry but not identical. AISI 4340 and 34CrNiMo6 have much more nickel and are not equivalents.

### What is the tensile strength of 39NiCrMo3?

Quenched and tempered (+QT) to EN 10083-3: 980-1180 MPa for diameters up to 16 mm, down to 740-880 MPa for diameters of 160-250 mm. Minimum yield strength goes from 785 MPa to 540 MPa over the same size range.

### How is 39NiCrMo3 heat treated?

Harden from 820-860 °C and quench in oil or water, then temper at 540-680 °C. Soft annealing is done at 650-700 °C with slow cooling, which gives a maximum hardness of 240 HB. Normalizing temperature is 850-880 °C.

### What is the difference between 39NiCrMo3, 42CrMo4 and 34CrNiMo6?

42CrMo4 has no nickel. 39NiCrMo3 has 0.70-1.00% nickel, which gives better toughness at a similar strength. 34CrNiMo6 has 1.30-1.70% nickel and 1.30-1.70% chromium, so it hardens deeper and suits larger sections.

### Where can I buy 39NiCrMo3 forgings?

Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd., an open-die forging factory at No.1 Chengxiqiao Road, Zhouzhuang Town, Jiangyin City, Jiangsu Province, China, makes 39NiCrMo3 forged bars, hollow bars, sleeves, forged rings, seamless rolled rings, discs, blocks and shafts. Email sales@steelforgepieces.com or call +86 189 2135 9659.
