## Summary

1.0570 is the European material number for S355J2G3, formerly St 52-3 N. It is a normalized
non-alloy structural steel with a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa and guaranteed impact toughness
of 27 J at −20 °C. Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd., an open-die forging factory in Jiangyin,
Jiangsu, China, supplies 1.0570 as forged bars, seamless rolled rings, discs, sleeves and shafts to
EN 10250-2:2000.

Key figures, normalized condition, section up to 100 mm:

| Figure | Value |
|---|---|
| Tensile strength Rm | 490 MPa |
| Minimum yield strength Re | 315 MPa |
| Minimum elongation A, longitudinal | 20 % |
| Impact test temperature | −20 °C at 27 J |

## What is 1.0570 steel?

1.0570 is a weldable, normalized non-alloy structural steel. The number is the EN material number.
The grade name is S355J2G3 under EN 10025:1993 and S355J2+N under EN 10025-2:2004. Under the
withdrawn German standard DIN 17100 it was called St 52-3 N, and the N marks the normalized
delivery condition.

Table 1. How the grade name is built up

| Part | Meaning |
|---|---|
| S | Structural steel |
| 355 | Minimum yield strength in MPa for thin sections |
| J2 | Impact tested at −20 °C, minimum 27 J absorbed energy |
| +N or G3 | Normalized delivery condition |

For open-die forgings the governing standard is EN 10250-2:2000, *Open die steel forgings for
general engineering purposes, Part 2: Non-alloy quality and special steels*. Every composition and
property figure on this page is quoted to that standard. Plate and section values published in
EN 10025-2 are different, so order to the standard your drawing actually calls out.

### Where 1.0570 sits between grades

Against S235 or a plain C22, the gain is roughly 40 to 50 per cent in yield strength at very little
extra cost, since 1.0570 carries no deliberate chromium, nickel or molybdenum addition. The carbon
ceiling of 0.22 % keeps the carbon equivalent low enough to weld without special consumables. The J2
quality level covers service down to −20 °C, which is what makes the grade usable on cranes, outdoor
structures and deck equipment.

It is not a substitute for a quenched and tempered steel. Where the drawing asks for 700 MPa yield
or a hardened running surface, 42CrMo4 or AISI 4140 is the right material. Heat treatment will not
get 1.0570 there.

## 1.0570 chemical composition

Table 2. Chemical composition of steel 1.0570 / S355J2G3 in % by mass, EN 10250-2:2000

| Element | Limit |
|---|---|
| C | max 0.22 |
| Si | max 0.55 |
| Mn | max 1.60 |
| Ni | max 0.30 |
| P | max 0.035 |
| S | max 0.035 |
| Cr | max 0.30 |
| Mo | max 0.08 |
| Al | min 0.020 |
| Cr + Mo + Ni combined | < 0.48 |

On forgings with an equivalent diameter or thickness over 100 mm, EN 10250-2 requires the carbon
content to be agreed between purchaser and supplier. Tell us the finished section size when you
enquire and we confirm the ladle analysis before the melt is booked.

The minimum aluminium of 0.020 % is the grain-refining addition. It makes the steel fully killed and
fine grained, and without it the −20 °C impact requirement cannot be met reliably.

## 1.0570 mechanical properties

Properties are specified in the normalized (+N) condition. They drop as section thickness increases,
because heavy sections cool more slowly through the normalizing step and finish with a coarser
grain. Values apply to the nominal thickness of the finished forging.

Table 3. Mechanical properties of steel 1.0570 / S355J2G3, normalized (+N), EN 10250-2:2000

| Property | ≤ 100 mm | > 100 to 250 mm | > 250 to 500 mm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rm, tensile strength, MPa | 490 | 450 | 450 |
| Re, upper yield strength, min. MPa | 315 | 275 | 265 |
| A, elongation at fracture, min. %, longitudinal | 20 | 18 | 18 |
| A, elongation at fracture, min. %, transverse | 12 | 12 | 12 |
| KV, impact energy, min. J at −20 °C | 27 | 27 | 27 |

Transverse elongation and impact figures are the quality-class minima for the J2 designation. Test
position, specimen orientation and acceptance criteria should be stated on the order. We test to the
position you specify and report it on the EN 10204 3.1 certificate.

Table 4. Typical physical properties of 1.0570 steel at 20 °C

| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Density | 7.85 g/cm³ |

| Poisson's ratio | 0.30 |
| Thermal conductivity | approx. 45 W/m·K |
| Thermal expansion, 20 to 100 °C | approx. 12 × 10⁻⁶ /K |
| Hardness, normalized | approx. 150 to 190 HB |

Physical values are typical for normalized non-alloy structural steels of this composition and are
given for design calculation. They are not guaranteed acceptance values under EN 10250-2.

Equivalents are for cross-reference when raising an enquiry. They are not automatically
interchangeable, because composition limits, test temperatures and delivery conditions vary between
standards. If your drawing calls out one of these grades and you need it forged, send the drawing
together with the ordering standard. We confirm in writing whether 1.0570 can be certified against
it or whether a separate melt is required.

## 1.0570 forged products we manufacture

Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal is a forging works rather than a stockholder. Each 1.0570 part is forged to
the customer's drawing or dimension list, normalized, rough machined where the order calls for it,
and shipped with a material certificate. Common forms:

- **Forged bars.** Round, square, rectangular, flat and hexagonal bars in 1.0570. Supplied black
forged, peeled, turned or rough machined to your allowance.
- **Seamless rolled rings.** Ring-rolled 1.0570 blanks for slew rings, bearing housings, flanges and
tyres. Grain flow follows the circumference, so a rolled ring carries hoop load better than one
  cut from plate.
- **Hollow bars and sleeves.** Forged and bored 1.0570 sleeves, bushings, cylinders, casings,
shells, hubs and housings. Less machining time and less swarf than starting from solid bar.
- **Discs, blocks and plates.** Upset-forged 1.0570 discs and blocks for tube sheets, end covers,
die holders, and in place of heavy plate where through-thickness properties matter.
- **Shafts and spindles.** Stepped shafts, pinion shafts, spindles and gear blanks in 1.0570, forged
with allowance for final machining and ultrasonic inspection.
- **Flanges and special shapes.** Forged 1.0570 flanges and near-net shapes to drawing. Send a PDF
or STEP file and we quote weight, tooling and lead time.

### Manufacturing and quality control route

All 1.0570 work passes through the same five stages. Normalizing is not optional if the order calls
for EN 10250-2 property values, since an as-forged part will not reliably meet them.

1. **Melting and traceability.** Electric-arc or converter melted, ladle refined, ingot or
continuously cast. The heat number stays traceable from ingot through to the finished part.
2. **Open-die forging, 1100 to 1250 °C.** Forged with a controlled reduction ratio and finished
above roughly 850 °C, which closes porosity and develops grain flow along the part.
3. **Normalizing, 890 to 950 °C.** Reheated, soaked, then air cooled. This refines the grain after
hot working and is the condition the guaranteed properties are quoted in.
4. **Testing.** Spectrometer analysis, tensile test, Charpy V-notch impact at −20 °C, hardness
survey and ultrasonic inspection to your acceptance class.
5. **Certification.** Shipped with an EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificate as standard. A 3.2
certificate witnessed by a third party is available on request.

### Applications

1.0570 forgings suit anything that needs a moderate strength, tough, weldable steel in a heavy
section: general machine building and plant engineering, gearbox housings and gear blanks,
shipbuilding socket and structural parts, crane and lifting components, mining and quarry equipment,
hydraulic cylinder parts, wind tower internals, roller bodies, tappets, and press and die
structures.

## Frequently asked questions about 1.0570

**What is 1.0570 equivalent to?**
1.0570 is equivalent to S355J2G3 under EN 10025:1993, S355J2+N under EN 10025-2:2004, and St 52-3 N
under the withdrawn DIN 17100. The nearest international grades are ASTM A572 Gr. 50, Chinese Q355D,
Japanese SM490B/C, British 50D, Italian Fe 510 D and French E36-3.

**Is 1.0570 the same as S355J2?**
Not quite. S355J2 carries material number 1.0577 and specifies no delivery condition. 1.0570 is the
normalized version, written S355J2+N or S355J2G3. On forgings the distinction matters, because
normalizing refines the grain after hot working and delivers the guaranteed −20 °C toughness through
the section.

**What is the tensile strength of 1.0570?**
In the normalized condition to EN 10250-2:2000, tensile strength Rm is 490 MPa for nominal thickness
up to 100 mm and 450 MPa from 100 mm to 500 mm. Minimum upper yield strength Re is 315 MPa up to
100 mm, 275 MPa from 100 to 250 mm, and 265 MPa from 250 to 500 mm.

**Can 1.0570 be welded?**
Yes, and it is meant to be. The grade takes MMA, MAG, submerged arc and gas welding without special
consumables, since the 0.22 % carbon ceiling holds the carbon equivalent down. Preheat is normally
needed only on heavy sections or in cold ambient conditions. Check the procedure against your
section thickness and the carbon equivalent shown on the mill certificate.

**Can 1.0570 be hardened?**
Not through-hardened. At a maximum of 0.22 % carbon with no deliberate alloying, the grade does not
respond usefully to quench and temper, and it is supplied normalized. Case carburizing or induction
hardening of a wear face is possible. For higher core strength, move to a quenched and tempered
grade such as 42CrMo4.

**What is the difference between 1.0570 and 42CrMo4?**
1.0570 is an unalloyed normalized structural steel with 355 MPa minimum yield. 42CrMo4 is a
chromium-molybdenum steel supplied quenched and tempered, reaching roughly double the yield strength
with far better hardenability in heavy sections. Take 1.0570 for weldable structures where 355 MPa
is enough and cost matters.

**What is the forging temperature for 1.0570?**
The grade is normally heated to about 1100 to 1250 °C for open-die forging and finished above
roughly 850 °C. It is then normalized at about 890 to 950 °C and air cooled. Working below the
finishing temperature risks cracking and leaves an unrefined structure that will fail the impact
requirement.

**What sizes of 1.0570 forgings can you supply?**
Size follows your drawing rather than a stock list, since every part is forged to order.
EN 10250-2 specifies properties up to 500 mm nominal thickness, and the values step down as the
section grows. Send finished dimensions and the allowance you need, and we confirm achievable size,
weight and tolerance in writing.

**Do you supply a material certificate with 1.0570 forgings?**
Yes. Every order ships with an EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificate as standard, reporting heat
number, ladle analysis, delivery condition, and the tensile, impact and hardness results for that
batch. EN 10204 3.2 certification witnessed by a third-party inspection body is available on
request.

**How do I request a quotation for 1.0570 forgings?**
Email your drawing or dimension list to sales@steelforgepieces.com, or call and message
+86 189 2135 9659 on WhatsApp or WeChat. Include quantity, ordering standard, delivery condition,
testing requirements and destination port, and a price and lead time normally follow within one
working day.
