## Summary

Steel 1.0436 is the EN material number for grade P305GH, a non-alloy quality steel specified in EN 10222-2 for open-die forgings used in pressure equipment at elevated temperature. The composition is 0.15 to 0.20 % C, max 0.40 % Si, 0.90 to 1.60 % Mn, max 0.025 % P and max 0.015 % S.

Normalized (+N) or normalized and tempered (+NT) material reaches 490 to 610 MPa tensile strength, with minimum yield between 280 and 305 MPa according to section thickness. Quenched and tempered (+QT) material reaches 510 to 630 MPa.

Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal Co., Ltd. is an open-die forging factory in Jiangyin, Jiangsu, China that produces 1.0436 / P305GH forgings to EN 10222-2: seamless rolled rings, discs and tubesheets, flanges, valve bodies and bonnets, shafts, sleeves and hollow bars.

## What is steel 1.0436 (P305GH)?

1.0436 is the material number under EN 10027-2. P305GH is the name for the same steel under EN 10027-1. Drawings, purchase orders and mill certificates use both, and they mean one grade.

The name breaks down as follows. P is a steel for pressure purposes. 305 is the minimum yield strength in MPa for the thinnest section covered by the standard. G indicates that a supply condition is specified, and H that elevated temperature properties are specified. Since the 305 figure belongs to the thinnest range only, heavy forged sections take a lower value from the table in EN 10222-2. Carrying 305 straight from the grade name into a wall thickness calculation is a common and expensive mistake.

P305GH is a non-alloy quality steel. There is no deliberate chromium, molybdenum or nickel. Strength comes from carbon at 0.15 to 0.20 % together with manganese running as high as 1.60 %. That makes the grade cheaper and easier to weld than the Cr-Mo pressure steels such as 13CrMo4-5, and it gives up creep performance in return. For boiler drums, vessel nozzles and valve bodies that stay below the creep range, P305GH is usually the sensible pick.

## Chemical composition of 1.0436

Percent by mass, ladle analysis to EN 10222-2.

| Element | Symbol | Content (%) | Role in the grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon | C | 0.15 – 0.20 | Sets base strength, held low for weldability |
| Silicon | Si | max 0.40 | Deoxidiser |
| Manganese | Mn | 0.90 – 1.60 | Main strengthening addition, carries hardenability in heavy sections |
| Phosphorus | P | max 0.025 | Residual, capped against temper embrittlement |
| Sulphur | S | max 0.015 | Residual, capped to protect through-thickness toughness |

EN 10222-2 also caps residual Cr, Cu, Mo, Ni and Nb and calls for a minimum aluminium content for grain refinement. Check the residual limits and the product analysis tolerances against the current edition before placing an order.

### Melting and cleanliness

1.0436 for pressure duty is supplied fully killed and fine grain treated. Where a buyer needs higher Charpy values, or wants to reduce the risk of reheat cracking in thick welded sections, phosphorus and sulphur can be held below the standard maxima. Put the target on the enquiry and it goes into the heat specification.

## Mechanical properties of 1.0436

Room temperature, to EN 10222-2.

| Property | Condition | Value | Unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tensile strength Rm | +N or +NT | 490 – 610 | MPa |
| Tensile strength Rm | +QT | 510 – 630 | MPa |
| Yield strength ReH, minimum | +N or +NT | 280 – 305 | MPa |
| Yield strength ReH, minimum | +QT | 285 | MPa |
| Elongation at fracture A, minimum | longitudinal | 22 | % |
| Elongation at fracture A, minimum | transverse | 20 | % |
| Impact energy KV, minimum | longitudinal, +20 °C | 48 | J |
| Impact energy KV, minimum | transverse, +20 °C | 27 | J |

Minimum yield for 1.0436 steps down as the ruling section grows, which is why the standard quotes a band instead of one number. Take the exact value for your ruling section from EN 10222-2 before closing a pressure calculation. Impact testing below room temperature is an option and has to be agreed at enquiry stage.

### Delivery conditions

- **+N**, normalized. The default for most 1.0436 forgings.
- **+NT**, normalized and tempered. Used to steady the properties in heavier sections.
- **+QT**, quenched and tempered. Gives the higher 510 to 630 MPa tensile band.

All three are available. Heat treatment can be run after rough machining, so that the tested properties belong to the delivered cross section instead of an oversized blank.

## Designations and comparable grades

| System | Designation | Note |
|---|---|---|
| EN 10027-2, material number | 1.0436 | Same steel as P305GH |
| EN 10027-1, name | P305GH | Specified in EN 10222-2 |
| Product standard | EN 10222-2 | Steel forgings for pressure purposes, part 2 |
| Often cross-referenced | ASTM A508 Gr. 1A, UNS K03020, DIN 20Mn5 | Near equivalents only |

Cross-reference tables help you start an enquiry. They do not replace an approval. Composition bands, heat treatment rules, test piece location and impact requirements all differ between the EN, ASTM and DIN documents, so a grade printed as an equivalent will not always satisfy your design code.

## Where 1.0436 forgings are used

- Boiler drums, headers and steam circuit forgings
- Pressure vessel shells, nozzles and reinforcing pads built to EN 13445 or comparable codes
- Shell-and-tube heat exchanger tubesheets, channel covers and girth flanges
- Valve bodies, bonnets and closures for steam and process duty
- Piping components and long welding neck flanges in refinery and petrochemical plant
- General apparatus and machine construction calling for a weldable, normalizable 490 to 610 MPa forging

The grade is not meant for long-term creep service. Where the design temperature sits above the range EN 10222-2 covers for P305GH, the usual step up is a Cr-Mo grade such as 13CrMo4-5 or 10CrMo9-10.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is 1.0436 the same as P305GH?**
Yes. 1.0436 is the EN material number and P305GH is the EN steel name for the same grade, specified in EN 10222-2 for steel forgings for pressure purposes. Either designation works on drawings, orders and certificates.

**What is the chemical composition of 1.0436 steel?**
Steel 1.0436 (P305GH) contains 0.15 to 0.20 % carbon, max 0.40 % silicon, 0.90 to 1.60 % manganese, max 0.025 % phosphorus and max 0.015 % sulphur. EN 10222-2 also caps the residual elements and calls for a minimum aluminium content for grain refinement.

**What are the mechanical properties of 1.0436 forgings?**
Normalized or normalized and tempered material gives 490 to 610 MPa tensile strength with minimum yield between 280 and 305 MPa depending on section thickness. Quenched and tempered material gives 510 to 630 MPa tensile and 285 MPa minimum yield. Minimum elongation is 22 % longitudinal and 20 % transverse. Minimum Charpy impact energy at +20 °C is 48 J longitudinal and 27 J transverse.

**Is 1.0436 a carbon steel or an alloy steel?**
1.0436 is classified as a non-alloy quality steel. It relies on carbon and manganese instead of deliberate chromium, molybdenum or nickel additions, which makes it more weldable and less costly than the Cr-Mo pressure grades.

**Is 1.0436 weldable?**
Yes. Low carbon content and the absence of alloying additions suit the welded construction normal in boilers and pressure vessels. Preheat and post-weld heat treatment follow the applicable welding procedure and design code, and matter more as section thickness goes up.

**What is the maximum service temperature for P305GH?**
P305GH is qualified for elevated temperature pressure duty under EN 10222-2, and design values fall as temperature rises. It is not a creep-range grade. Above the range the standard covers, move to a Cr-Mo steel such as 13CrMo4-5 or 10CrMo9-10 and take the allowable stresses from the applicable design code.

**Which forged shapes can be made in 1.0436?**
Jiangyin Jiangnan Metal forges 1.0436 into seamless rolled rings, discs, tubesheets and tube plates, girth and cover flanges, long welding neck and nozzle-neck flanges, valve bodies, bonnets, stems and seat rings, shafts, round and hollow bars, sleeves, bushings, cylinders, hubs, housings and heat exchanger components.
